****

Joshua slowly glanced between the houses and carefully checked over their numbers. Brendon’s home was a great distance from his own... but that was merely because his own house was far away from everyone. He had specifically bought a house that was secluded and private.

He had no neighbors and was never bothered by anyone. It was exactly what he had always wanted in a home.

His gaze darkened as he passed Lynda’s home, but did not bother to even glance at her residence. His mother... lived exactly six houses away from Brendon...

Joshua scoffed with disgust, but his inner resentment towards his mother easily began to fade when he finally saw Brendon’s home...

Slowly his emerald gaze trailed over its design... and he silently began taking in unnecessary details. It was a small one leveled home... that had been occupied long enough for some light gardening to be done...

The windows were large... but he couldn’t see completely inside. There was only one door that he could see, but he imagined there was a back entrance too.

Joshua frowned and was displeased in himself for wasting so much time simply viewing the architecture of his home. It did not matter. He was here for one reason alone and then he would be taking his leave.

He began forward and kept his gaze riveted on the front door. He did not care for whatever he may have seen beyond those blinds.

He raised his hand to knock firmly on the door, but faltered when he heard... the faint voice of—

Joshua unconsciously took in a deep breath... wanting to smell him... but his senses were dulled and he could only gather a small fragment of his scent...

He closed his eyes and opened his mouth slightly... trying to taste his scent... but he couldn’t. A frown etched into his features as he set the bag of books down and began moving around the house.

He didn’t look through the windows, but instead moved closer until he could hear his voice much more...

There were two windows before him... and he was careful to remain unseen as he neared the window Brendon was closest too. A strange warmth filled him... as he began listening to his soft voice. The boy was reading something...

"Now and then a mound of snow would topple to the forest floor with a muffled thud that quivered through the air like the boom of distant thunder."

Joshua closed his eyes... and pressed his back firmly against the wall as he listened. His voice... was soothing... and addictive.

"It was the only sound in the wood. The stillness that settled now across the country was as deep as the blackness beginning to swallow up Transylvania, the land beyond the forest."

He continued to listen attentively and couldn't seem to break away from the sound of his voice. He was drawn to it... attracted...to it...

"But there was life in the wood; a single pair of hungry, searching eyes. They were moving rapidly through the twilight, glittering furiously in the shadows as they came."

'Keep reading...' he whispered within his mind... and looked to the window... wanting to see him... But he knew what would happen if he was caught. Brendon's sweet voice would stop...reading to him...

He closed his eyes again and continued to listen...

"They're intelligence, the ancient, cunning of the predator, and they're...f...feb...febrile...?"

"Febrile," Joshua whispered... in agreement to the word that Brendon sounded unsure of. He knew what it meant and it fit well with what the author was trying to portray.

“Now and then a mound of snow would topple to the forest floor with
a muffled thud that quivered through the air like a boom of distant thunder,
”
Brendon continued to read aloud… but he was having difficulty paying attention.
He frowned and paused for a moment, adjusting himself within the sofa seat. He
tried to make himself more comfortable and continued: “It was the only sound
in the wood. The stillness that settled now across the country was as deep
as the blackness beginning to swallow up Transylvania, the land beyond
the forest.

“But there was life in the wood; a single pair of hungry, searching eyes.
They were moving rapidly through the twilight, glittering furiously in the
shadows as they came.
”

Brendon sat back in his seat, his gaze lifting from the page for a moment as he
envisioned a wolf moving through a forest at night. He smiled a little… seeing a
flash of green eyes glittering as the book had said.

“They’re intelligence, the ancient, cunning of the predator, and they’re fff…
feeb-brile?
” Brendon hesitated and didn’t recognize or understand the word.

“Febrile,” A deep voice, although only the slightest faint of a murmur, told him the
word.

“Febrile…,” He echoed softly and nodded his head… b-but then quickly gasped.
His eyes grew wide and he jumped up from his seat, his large amber eyes looking
left and then right before he finally turned around and glanced toward the window
behind him.

But his eyes opened as he realized... that Brendon had heard him.

His gaze lifted and widened slightly as he heard the boy gasp and quickly begin moving to peer out the window.

Joshua tensed and pressed himself firmly against the wall to remain hidden... but his heart was beginning to pound a little heavier...as he waited and listened.

T-There was no one. Brendon blushed, deeply, his heart still pounding as he
heard that man’s voice within his head. W-Why had he heard him… His heart
clenched and he felt a sense of unease well up within him. He was once again
reminded of his robes and garbs, and his gaze moved down the hall and toward
his bedroom.

As the forbidden though occurred to him, the sixteen year old could feel his heart
pounding fiercely within his chest. He wanted it… even though he shouldn’t.
T-There wasn’t anything special about it… He shouldn’t have wanted something
like that…

His thoughts were a jumbled mess, but that was simply because he didn’t want
to admit to it fully. He didn’t want to say it out loud or even in his head.

“Stupid man…,” He mumbled madly and clutched his book tighter, feeling grumpy
all over again. He didn’t like that he was hearing his voice in his head now…

Joshua exhaled mutely and closed his eyes as he heard no further sounds. Brendon was not moving to inspect the other window that was directly facing him. He was relieved because he stubbornly hadn’t wanted to leave...

But what he was doing— what he had already done was once again insane...

Joshua had heard Brendon’s voice and come to listen to him. He had once again lost control of himself and acted solely on his desire.

“Stupid man...,” Joshua looked to the window and realized that Brendon had not only heard him, but recognized his voice...

That brought him an immediate surge of satisfaction.

Joshua glanced down towards his watch and could see that it was twenty minutes after one. He had planned to arrive on time and take his leave without any delay...

But now... he wanted to stay and continue listening to Brendon...

He frowned as he slowly looked to the open land before him and knew that he would not go unnoticed by others for long. The two of them would be contacted and eventually informed that someone was loitering within their property...

A scoff of amusement nearly escaped him as he thought about how absurd he was acting...by remaining out here...

But despite his thoughts... he still wanted to stay...

Slowly his gaze lowered to the emerald gemstone that was on his middle finger and he unconsciously began moving it back and forth. He was contemplating something unthinkable...

He knew of a way that he could remain hidden... and both hear and smell Brendon...

His gaze lulled with desire and he found himself almost dazed with that possibility...

Brendon’s cheeks warmed as he felt his temper flaring up within him. H-He didn’t
want to, but… but he didn’t feel like he could properly do anything until he…
h-he went and got it…

He could feel his chest tightening with anticipation as he wrung his hands together
and then placed his book down on the coffee table within the middle of the living
room. I-It wouldn’t… I-It wasn’t…

W-Who was he kidding…!

Brendon left the living room and ventured down the hall, pushing his bedroom
door open further as he entered. And, within his own room, the scent immediately
greeted him…

His cheeks burned, and his heart skipped a beat, before he quickly made his way
forward and toward his laundry basket. He grumbled as he picked his robes up…
hesitantly glancing around the room as he folded the long (but dirty!) garbs in his
arms.

He blushed, knowing his mother would be angry with him if she found out—and
he did the unthinkable. He grabbed his bed sheets and hid the clothes underneath
them, bundling everything up in order to take it all back into the living room with
him.

It could be so easy... all he needed to do was remove his ring...

Joshua began slipping the silver ring down his finger... but he stopped and withdrew from his daze when he heard Brendon leaving. He tensed and immediately thought he was going to his mother...

He closed his eyes and listened, but he could not hear anything anymore. He clenched his teeth together in annoyance and actually pushed forth to view inside Brendon’s home...

There was a sofa pressed against the window, but he couldn’t see anyone inside. Joshua tensed and backed away from the window when he realized just what he was doing.

Why was this pull so powerful?

He was a man of control both mentally and physically. He had always remained well disciplined and did not act like this...

There was an anger brewing inside of him...but he didn’t quite understand what it was.

He needed to leave... before he did anything else... the further away he was... the better...

Joshua moved back around the house, but stopped as he glanced to the bag of books outside their home.

He didn’t care.

Joshua began moving away from the house once more, but found himself stopping again.

He knew what he wanted... and it was causing him to hesitate, and he fought with himself to continue down the path and leave.

But like every other craving... involving that boy... he couldn't resist... the temptation...

Joshua cursed himself as he turned and began towards their front door. He wanted something before he left... and he couldn’t restrain the craving.

Without any hesitation he knocked on the door and retrieved the bag of books to deliver them as promised. But his motives were entirely selfish...

Brendon walked back down the hallway, carefully. His cheeks were hot and he
was inwardly nervous—nervous of his mother somehow finding out what he was
doing. He wondered what she would think… H-He had been acting strangely all
day today. He wondered if she would think that…

Suddenly, someone was knocking on the door… and Brendon quickly stopped in
his tracks… his eyes widening with alertness and his gaze quickly moving to his
mother as she appeared from their kitchen.

“W-Who is it?” He asked her, unconsciously hugging his sheets to him… as he
peered at her from overtop them.

“I believe it is Mr. Ardel, the owner of the bookstore,” She told him with a subtle
smile… but paused for a moment as she stared down at him. Brendon wasn’t sure
if he sensed anything, a-and his heart was already beating quickly.

He muttered a quick ‘o-oh’ and immediately turned around to bound back down
the hallway. But, after a handful of steps, he stopped at his door in order to turn
around and stare back down the hallway… hearing his mother open the front door
to greet him.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Ardel,” She greeted him kindly.

Joshua closed his eyes and exhaled slowly... waiting for the door to open. He tensed as the two doors separating them opened and he was instantly greeted with his aroma...

The fragrance filled his senses... and brought him pure satisfaction...

“Good afternoon,” he returned his voice strong and deep as he stood before and stared down at the woman.

“I’ve brought your package,” Joshua told her smoothly and held the bag out to her.

All he had wanted was a taste... of his intoxicating scent and then he would take his leave. The temptation had been too strong...
