Brendon walked back down the hallway, carefully. His cheeks were hot and he
was inwardly nervous—nervous of his mother somehow finding out what he was
doing. He wondered what she would think… H-He had been acting strangely all
day today. He wondered if she would think that…
Suddenly, someone was knocking on the door… and Brendon quickly stopped in
his tracks… his eyes widening with alertness and his gaze quickly moving to his
mother as she appeared from their kitchen.
“
W-Who is it?†He asked her, unconsciously hugging his sheets to him… as he
peered at her from overtop them.
“I believe it is Mr. Ardel, the owner of the bookstore,†She told him with a subtle
smile… but paused for a moment as she stared down at him. Brendon wasn’t sure
if he sensed anything, a-and his heart was already beating quickly.
He muttered a quick ‘o-oh’ and immediately turned around to bound back down
the hallway. But, after a handful of steps, he stopped at his door in order to turn
around and stare back down the hallway… hearing his mother open the front door
to greet him.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Ardel,†She greeted him kindly.
