Dancing Banana...No seriously...

"I guess. Mixed emotions. It gets depressing after a while..."

"How?" Annie asked, wondering if it was because of the people or the monotiny, or what.

"How long have you been going there?"

"Not very long. What about you?" Annie replied, just as Bob finished eating his carrot. She set him down gently.

When asked how, October looked down. She shouldn't have brought it up. She had been telling the truth, though. "Things happen here... the second things go good, something happens and everything goes wrong..." she said softly.

Teenage angst... how wonderful.

"Me? Since September," she replied. "It's been a longggg couple of months..."

"Oh...like what?" Annie bit her lip as soon as the words were out. "Don't mean to pry..."

"How old are you?" She thought it would be a good idea to change the topic, but she kind of hoped October would reply to her first question anyway.

October's violet eyes narrowed somewhat, but not in anger — instead, to fight back tears. "Like the boy you like avoiding you because he thinks he almost killed you and because you killed your sister-in-law unintentionally and almost killed your niece. And don't forget maybe your nephew dies because his grandmother is an evil person and maybe your sisters husband dies because his mother killed him!"

By now, tears were running down her cheeks, but she quickly wiped them away. She didn't want to cry. She didn't like people to worry about her when there were so many other things they could be doing with their time.

"I'm thirteen," she answered. "And you?"

Annie stood up and gave October a hug. "That really does suck..." She said comfortingly. "I'm sorry. I'm not good at this sort of thing."

"I'm fifteen."

October clung to Annie, finally just sobbing. She hadn't done this in forever, and just needed to let it out. She felt horrible for doing it and swallowed, wiping her eyes. "I'm really sorry for making you have to listen to this..." she said, her voice becoming high pitched for a moment before more sobs came from her throat.

She didn't respond to Annie's age.

Annie could tell October was about to cry again, so she gave her a comforting pat on the back. "It's okay. I don't mind. I'm sorry you have to deal with that." She was actually in a SERIOUS mood. It was rare for her.
