Sam had been at this school for almost a year now. While it's definitely different from what he's used to - well, everything's different from what he's used to - he quite liked being here. The structure was something that took a long time to adapt to, but he was starting to like it. Getting real classes, learning real things without having to hide. Having a real room to himself, and money that he didn't have to steal. And he was making friends as well, or at least trying to. It hadn't been going as well as it could be. But hey, he hadn't gotten into a fight for almost a month now. A record.

Instead, here he was, sitting in a bench behind the school at stupid o'clock in the morning. Nobody was around. Well, a few people were, but he could hear them and anyways they didn't pose that much of a concern anymore, since he knew that he didn't have to be so scared here.

The thing was, he liked to fight. But he didn't like seeing other people hurt. He hurt people because he was scared for himself. That was something he'd never admit to anyone then and would still hesitate to admit now. And now, a year down the road, he's thinking again about all the people he'd hurt. Not just hurt with his fists, but people he'd stolen from, lied to. He didn't know how he was feeling, but the feeling in his stomach definitely wasn't a good one.

Hiatus
Jacota was wandering around in his dog form, which he did a lot. It was a habit from his time as a street dog, when he had to change the place to sleep two or three times a night in case he was attacked. By people, other dogs or rats, who knew.
Even now he was yawning a bit, his eyes a bit blurry. Jacota couldn't sleep properly in his dorm room, and thus he usually just ended up teleporting out of his room and walking around the island, taking naps here and there. This night had been no different. The sun had risen and Jacota had been out of his nightmare form for a while now, and he felt tired.
The shifter tags around Jacota's neck were buried under his thick fur and the people he came across looked at him a bit longer, thinking a dog was just casually wandering around the campus. And Jacota tried his best to avoid eye contact with anyone.

Jacota sniffed around, looking for food scraps out of habit again. He didn't need to anymore, but it was a habit. He couldn't help it.
Jacota circled behind the school, and though he was bad at following the time Jacota had made the effort of trying to remember to always show on his first class. He liked learning, he liked when he did something well and was praised. Though he tried not to show it.
Suddenly Jacota sniffed something familiar and noticed a person sitting on a bench. If Jacota remembered right the boy was in remedial classes as well. But Jacota wasn't good at remembering names so he couldn't bring it to his mind.
Jacota jogged closer, sniffing of the boy had food. He didn't sniff anything and Jacota was about to turn away. But he saw the boy's face, and his mind felt a bit muddled. Like a bucket of mud water had been thrown on his thoughts. It was something about the boy's expression, and it made it hard for Jacota to leave.
Jacota whined a bit to himself, and went to sit couple of meters to the right from the bench. He kept glancing at the boy, wondering if he should talk to him or not.

Sam heard the dog coming before it was around the bend. A dog. He had learned that a lot of the animals on the island weren't actually animals, as opposed to how it was like at home. Sometimes it turned out that the bird he had been throwing bread at was actually a shapeshifter. Sometimes it turned out that cats could talk. So when he did hear the dog approaching, his first thought was that it was probably a person. There weren't many real dogs that were allowed to roam around the campus after all.

As the dog - not a massive dog, a dog of average size - approached him, Sam recognised that there was definitely the scent of somebody he knew coming off the dog. Except they're apparently now a dog. Somebody who was in class with him. Not regular classes, though. Remedial. Who was in remedial?

Jacota. That was who he was. A quiet, small kind of person. Sam hadn't paid much attention to him in class, but he doesn't really pay much attention to anybody.

"Hey," Sam called out, when dog-Jacota approached him and whined. "Hey, dog-who's-actually-Jacota. I can't see you but I can hear you. I don't speak dog. Is there something you want to tell me?"

Jacota jumped a bit when the boy called him, and with his name no less. Jacota looked at the boy carefully, what had he meant he couldn't-?
Suddenly Jacota remembered. This boy was blind, so naturally he couldn't see Jacota. Jacota had never met a blind person before. Anything blind nearly always died on the streets.
Jacota shuffled a bit closer to the bench and huffed.
"You don't need to be able to speak dog. I speak people."
Jacota looked around nervously and set his chin on the bench.
"Why do you know my name?"

"You're in remedial with me, aren't you?" Sam replied. He's gotten to known everybody in his classes by their scent and voice. It was a good skill to have, and used to be quite a lot more important back then. Now it mostly just made people happy that he's bothered to remember. "Nice that you speak people. Bit scary to be talking to a dog, though,"

Sam grinned at Jacota, who had moved very close to him. That made him a little anxious. He still didn't like to be so close to people, especially when they're alone. It still made him feel like he's going to be attacked, although he knew that the island didn't allow that. "What do you want, Jacota?"

Jacota's ears pressed down a bit. This boy knew his name, and that theu both went to remedial. Jacota felt a bit bad he didn't know anything about this boy. He barely remembered they were both in remedial but nothing else. It was weird, when you had to remember people's names. Jacota hadn't had to do that in many years.
Jacota flinched when the boy said that it was a bit scary to be a talking dog. That hurt Jacota on some level, since he was struggling with the fact whether he was more dog or a person. He whined a bit.
"I'm in remedial. I don't know anything and they teach me how to be people."

The grin the boy sent at Jacota made his tail wag just a bit, though Jacota didn't notice. But even though the boy grinned Jacota still felt muddled. Jacota also noticed the boy didn't like him being so near so Jacota moved away a bit.
"...nothing. I was looking for food."
Though it didn't explain why Jacota has sat near the boy. But Jacota didn't really have guts to say he wanted to know what was bothering the boy. Not yet.
"I don't know your name."

The comment from dog-Jacota made Sam smile, against his own will. Learning how to be a person. Now this was something that he had experience with, but hearing it phrased like this by dog-Jacota was funny. Cute? Funny and cute. And not knowing anything. Sam related to that, as well. While he had learned a few things by reading, man, was he bad at maths and social studies. Remedial had helped, but he was still picking up things as he went along. "Don't worry about it. I'm learning a lot too."

Sam heard dog-Jacota wag his tail when he smiled. Okay, that's actually a bit cute. Having a dog with human intellect around. He wanted to pet the dog. The dog-human. Whatever. But that would be weird. Who pets a human?

"I haven't got any food. Are you hungry? I can bring you something," Sam said. He was a little upset that somebody had disturbed him here, and bringing Jacota somewhere else would probably make him feel better. He wasn't the type of person to be found lurking around the school feeling sad. "I'm Sam. You can call me Sammy, or really whatever you want. Nice to meet you."

Jacota's tail kept wagging slightly outside his will when the boy smiled more. Jacota felt like he was doing something right, although he didn't know what. Had Jacota been wrong? Was the boy actually fine? Somehow Jacota didn't think so but his instincts, although rarely, could be wrong.
Jacota huffed a bit when the boy answered him, Jacota felt better now that it seemed that the boy didn't dislike him. And somehow it felt good that someone was in a similar situation.
"I worry about dying, and others. I don't worry about being people. What have you learned?"

Jacota shook his head when the boy offered to get him something, although he thought it was quite friendly from him to offer to do something like that. Then Jacota realized the boy couldn't see and felt bad for just shaking his head.
"N-no. I will eat food I find myself. But thank you."
Jacota huffed and sat a bit straighter, his street dog pride rising up a bit.
Jacota's tail wagged just a bit when the boy introduced himself as Sam, or Sammy. Jacota tilted his head, what should he call the boy? Sam or Sammy?
"I...should I call you...Samy?"

“I learned about a lot of things,” Sam said. Strangely, he related to Jacota’s statement. About being worried about dying, but being not so worried about acting like a person. It was what he had done when he still lived on the streets in Hong Kong, and it was what he did for too long of a time when he still lived here. Somehow he was ashamed, but he wasn’t going to let anyone else know. “Like how it’s mean to punch people when you’re angry. Or how stealing is bad.”

“Oh, that’s ok.” he responded to Jacota’s comment on food. He understood how it felt like to be so used to being self sufficient that it felt odd to accept help. Still, at Jacota’s distinctly dog-like reaction, he couldn’t help but smile.

“Call me Sam or Sammy, it’s your choice.” Nobody had called him Sammy before, but he wouldn’t mind. “Hey, Jacota. You mind if I pet you?”

Jacota started panting a bit as the boy spoke, the air was slowly getting warmer as the sun climbed higher. The summer had been rough on Jacota, who preferred to be in his dog form with thick fur. But Jacota felt safer as a dog.
"They told me that I can't bite people if they touch me suddenly, or that I don't need to scavenge for food. I don't bite people anymore."
Jacota tried to sound normal, but he was a bit proud of himself and his tail wagged a bit at his statement. But his ears pressed down after, and he observed the boy carefully.
"...you're not mean."

Jacota panted a bit wider when the boy smiled, so it looked like he was smiling too. Jacota could feel himself becoming less muddled and he inched a bit to the side so he sat more in front of the boy.
"Sammy."
Jacota said and his tail wagged a bit. Sammy sounded nice, it sounded soft and like it would jump up high. Jacota knew that didn't make any sense but oh well. When Sammy asked, if he could pet Jacota he nodded a bit.
"You can pet me."
Jacota lowered his head a bit so it was closer to Sammy and easier to reach.
