// If you want some insight on Oddleif, read the app here! //

Oddleif let out a tiny sigh escape past her lips as she tried her best not to appear bored, occasionally nodding her head to show that she was indeed listening to what the person behind the Admission Desk was telling her ... though whether her mind was actually at it - now that was a different story. In her mind's eye, she couldn't help but keep on revising the events of the past week now, like her whole consciousness was struggling to keep up with all that has happened so far, while time continued to tick-tick, on and on, without her ...

She sensed that the conversation was finally reaching its end, what with the person handing her a thick dossier with all kinds of papers inside and waved her good luck. Without realizing it, Oddleif could hear her voice answering "Thanks!", before she eagerly (perhaps too eagerly) turned away to exit the place.

"Phew ..." She exhaled loudly as soon as she was outside, glad for the fresh air of this strange new place - she couldn't help but feel uncomfortable inside the Admission Office, like they never bothered to open a window and the stuffy air made her lungs clench uncomfortable in her chest ... but it got better now. She was out and free to do what she wanted ... at least, that's what she thought.

Wait, what was it that guy told me about ... classes?

Oddleif blankly stared at the papery dossier she had been holding, flipping the lid open only to leaf through all the sheets and inspect them briefly - there were all kinds of signs and squiggly lines written all over them, but nothing that she could make sense of. There weren't any pictures, either! How does anyone make sense of something like this without pictures?

Meh. Oddleif shrugged her shoulders, looked around as to make sure that there was nobody around ... and nonchalantly dropped the dossier in a bushel of flowers close to the sidewalk that extended from the Admission Office throughout the whole campus of the Academy.

She tried her best not to show it at first, but she was positively impressed by the general outlook this place had - the buildings looked pretty and solid, unlike the wooden houses she often saw with the caravan whilst passing through some no-name village, and the greenery looked far better than whatever city council gardener could do during the summer ... she suspected that whatever made those flowers look so purple was magic. She then absentmindedly shook her head, looking like she was having a debate with her inner self, which was exactly the case - it's not just probably magic, it's more than certainly magic! This place is ... supposed to be all about magic.

Oddleif stared down at her hands, turning them around in the light of the sun, like she was seeing them for the first time. Her hands ... they were ugly - they were riddled with calluses, small bruises and healing cuts, from all the times she neglected using her protective gloves while working. Her nails were chipped and uneven, with dirt stuck underneath. It was almost hard to believe that these hands could ever do magic ...

And yet ... there, at the river ...

Odd narrowed her eyes and focused on her hands, all the while picturing the past situation, able to recall it from the depth of her memory like it had only happened a few moments ago - and just like that, she felt like she was submerged under a cold current as sensations flooded through her nerves, remembering.

The creaking of the wagons, the hoof-beat of the drag-horses, the shouts of the men and the laughter of the women as they passed time, the caravan moving at a slow but steady pace, the light reflecting against the ice-sheet as they moved over the frozen river ...

And then, a sickening CRACK sound soon followed, managing to silence the entire convoy whilst making Oddleif's stomach turn. It all had happened so fast, but she could still remember how she felt - like something was being sucked from her body, only to go out, ice spreading from her hands and feet at a dazzling speed, filling in the cracks of the river's surface and freezing everything in place.

I did that. Oddleif told herself as a stupid smile bloomed over her lips at the thought. I actually did that ... and I think I can do it again.

She didn't know how, exactly ... but the young woman just closed her eyes, thought very very hard about snow and icicles and winter ... and the next time her lids parted open, she let out a gasp of surprise as there was a thin layer of rime, glistening in the light like glittering gemstones.

"Yes!" Oddleif whooped out loud, only to stare around herself startled, suddenly remembering that she wasn't exactly alone in this place - and yet, she couldn't help herself from grinning like an idiot as she pretended she had to be somewhere else and walked away casually, a happy spring in her step as she abstained from not just doing cartwheels out of joy.

In a way, she did her best not to focus on the repercussions her developing powers had on her - that she had just lost her family and left behind the only world she had known for something else new, and strange, and equally as vast ... Instead, Oddleif decided that if there was any way to learn about this so-called 'Starlight Academy', she would have to explore the place, find out every nook and cranny that could be discovered, and ...

... well, that's where her plan ended. But at least she had a plan rather than nothing at all, right? Oddleif nodded to herself, more than pleased with her train of thought and began striding throughout the campus grounds, sea-green eyes peeled out for everything and everyone, ranging from the mundane to the peculiar.

''That would be all!'', the cheery woman sitting behind the Administration desk told him, a bright smile spreading over her face once again as she handed him back the stack of papers he had given her some half an hour before, the previously blank pages now filled neatly with all the information they needed to contain-his finally grades and overall success, words and numbers that no longer meant anything to him as the school had finally been let out almost a week before, even for him. ''Have a nice day!'', the cheery woman said again as he said his thanks respectfully, existing the building with only one thought in mind: nap.

The air outside was hot, especially after the machine-or-power controlled lower temperature his body had gotten used to while he was waiting for his paperwork to be done, and he suspected that once he turned to his other form it would only get more uncomfortable. He didn't have work today, however, not for the whole week actually, his father having forced him yet again somehow on his yearly-the-school-just-let-out-go-have-some-fun-boy sort-of-vacation, and despite having protested against it for almost four weeks, as always, he was sort of grateful for it, as always.

Knowing this, he also knew he wouldn't be expected home soon, maybe not even for dinner, and in all honesty he didn't exactly feel like walking all the way down town only to collapse in his probably too hot bed either. He wanted a nap, the heavy heat of air pressing down on him, but he could just as easily nap here. He only needed to find some secluded, marginally less sunny spot and his cat body would find a way of making itself comfortable somehow as it always did. And he probably wouldn't be the only shifter around doing something of a sort. Heat, especially when combined with summer, or any kind of break, actually, had a way of making everyone lazy.

Putting the papers back into his messenger bag with medium care (which meant he was careful enough not to lose any of them but not caring enough to make sure they didn't rip or crumple), he soon turned away from the Administration building and the too-cheerful worker there towards the nearest patch of grass in the shade which could be used as a napping spot. He soon found one not too far from there, and as he set his eyes on it, he began to change, his tall, tall lean human body breaking down effortlessly into a small compact body of a lynx. He sometimes wished he could change just as easily into a bigger, stronger animal that was a part of his other inherited blood-line but never once was he jealous or bitter, and wouldn't exchange this one for any other shape even if offered.

On the way towards his intended spot, he passed somebody else, a girl, looking around curiously as if she was seeing it for a first time. A new arrival he thought, before fastening his pace as to reach the spot in the shade before somebody else took it. Once there, he settled his eyes on the girl again. Having been born on the Island himself, he had never had an experience of witnessing it for the first time like this and thus always took interested in each new person who arrived, noting there expressions and comparing them to each other, and then to what he knew/saw/felt himself. Soon though he felt like yawning again, his sharp teeth glimmering in the hot summer sun as he did so.

Oddleif's eyes darted to and fro the vast landscape that stretched before her, studying the surroundings critically - one would never know when a detail considered insignificant would ever come in handy, like ... for a getaway route, or perhaps the perfect spot to set up a water balloon prank. As the day went on, it was getting considerably warm outside, and where the cold never seemed to bother Odd, heat made her incredibly uncomfortable.

Without thinking, she raised her palm to press it against her sweaty forehead, only to feel a pleasant chill spread over her clammy skin as watery beads turned to little flakes of ice ... only to quickly melt in the summer sun, leaving wet trails over her skin as they rolled down her face, like someone had just poured a glass of water over her head.

Oddleif managed to put some distance between her and the Administration Office, though she was not far enough as to actually lose sight of it, or fail to see the figures that went in or exited the doors ... she was surprised to find quite a handful of individual coming and going, strangers whom she did not know, yet was certain that she would remember. She never forgot a face when she saw it - her memory was that flawless.

A particular stranger had caught her eye, though - from the distance, she could make out the person's bright-red hair, shining in the light like fire. As they moved (and happened to draw closer for Odd to see), she could see that it was a tall young fellow, a bag slung over his shoulder where he had stuffed one of those dossiers that the Admission Office had once handed her, too. What a load, she thought absentmindedly ...

... but found herself coming to an abrupt halt as she caught the fire-haired man change forms ... just like that! In front of everyone! She found the act so shocking, yet amazing, but so nonchalant (and cool!), that her jaw just gaped open, emerald eyes as wide as saucers as she stared at the creature that casually padded its furry paws on the pathway, its furry ears twitching in the air and bob tail swinging behind it as it made its way towards a shady spot under a tree.

Certainly, the man-turned-feline felt the young woman staring at him, for their gazes met - and in that moment, Oddleif snapped her mouth shut and swallowed dryly, a rosy blush tinting her pale cheeks at being caught.

Is it rude to stare at someone who just transformed into a cat? I don't know ...

The ashen-haired woman didn't know what to make of what she had just witnessed - of course, it was to expected, considering that she was on an island where everyone was 'special' in some way or another, people who had gifts like her ... but being able to turn into a cat seemed so much more awesome than making snowballs in the summer. She wondered whether she could ever learn to do something as cool as that?

Whatever discomfort Oddleif had felt before, it was quickly banished and forgotten as her curiosity got the best of her, a barrage of questions exploding in her mind like questions, more than intrigued and interested in the strange man who had the amazing gift to change into a cat. With a spring in her step, Odd confidently strode towards the lynx as it laid on the grass under the cool shade of the tree, only to crouch a few steps next to him. She extended her hand gently as she grinned brightly, her voice surprisingly smooth as she spoke unabashed.

"Hey there. I'm Oddleif and I'm new here ... and I'm sorry that I stared at you earlier, but I think that turning into a cat is the coolest thing ever."

Samael let himself smile as the girl's eyes met his own, his teeth glimmering in the sun once more as in this form a yawn was not so different from a smile or a frown as it was in human form, at least to humans, as he had repeatedly been told by his friends. Somehow, though, he felt this girl would know, or at least wouldn't be put off by it, considering she had already seen what hid in his jaw and didn't even flinch away. Instead, she came closer, crouching some few steps away from him and extending her hand. ''Hey there'', she said, and Samael turned his eyes towards her, taking her in as she spoke. She had pale hair and green eyes, a scar running down below one of them, and he she looked at him in wonder he had not seen in quite some time.

Samael was used to people approaching him as a cat, both when they have seen him turn and not, there being something in it which drew in most people, especially when they were young, or new, which here might as well been a same thing sometimes. The wonder and curiosity in this girl's eyes however seemed somewhat different, wider, brighter in a way. Like she truly thought it was the coolest thing she had ever seen. Most people reserved that spot for their own powers, anything they might encounter on the Island coming second to what they themselves could do, so hearing something like that coming from a student here certainly surprised him somewhat.

Too lazy to turn back into a human immediately after he had changed shape to cat, he tried softly bumping his head against her extended hand in order to let her know it was okay. He was used to the staring too, especially from the ones who were amazed by him but did not dare approach. Also, it wasn't like he wasn't doing his own fair share of staring too, considering he was looking at the girl even before their eyes met, failing her expressions to the back of his mind along with the rest of the small, seemingly unimportant things he picked up all throughout the day so he could think about them later, in peace.

What surprised him even more than the girl's honest, not-usually heard words though was how cold the girl's hand was against his fur, especially compared to the still rising heat outside. He felt himself shiver, almost purring at how comfortable it felt, only to find himself nuzzling his head against that cool, refreshing patch of skin before he could think better of himself and his behaviour. He was not a real cat, nor a child just learning to change. He really should have known better than to do that. If cats of any kind could blush, his fur would have become the colour of his hair and refuse to fade back.

Oddleif's grin only continued to widen to the point that it looked quite silly on her face, seeing the positive reception she received from the lynx - she didn't really need him to say anything to tell that he was being friendly, especially the way his furry head pressed against the palm of her hand, practically stroking by himself. Odd knew her way with cats, even larger than this one - back at the circus, she loved watching the keeper feed the tigers and lions kept in their cages and how they acted like kittens whenever he was around. When she grew a little bit older and more knowledgeable, she insisted on helping ... and it wasn't long before the ashen-haired teen was tumbling around with the ferocious cats, laughing as they kicked plastic balls around or trained for the coming performance.

"N'aww, you're a friendly one ain'tcha?" She continued, this time taking the initiative to pet the lynx and run her hand across his smooth, healthy fur, loving the ticklish sensation as it prickled pleasantly against her skin. Without reservation, Oddleif sat down on the grass next to the lynx and began massaging at his neck and shoulders, a routine she did to the larger cats back at the circus. She certainly seemed to have forgotten that in a way, this particular cat was also a guy ... but perhaps it was best not to think about it. Odd was quite scatter-brained like that, though that didn't stop her from talking nevertheless.

"I never saw a cat like you b'fore, but you sure have teeth sharper than our Belle back at the circus." She happily went on talking, saying all the things that passed through her mind without thinking them through first. "And your fur is so soft! I remember this one time when I had to wash Sandor with this new shampoo and his fur went all floofy, but it doesn't compare to yours ... though it's also pretty thick. Aren't you hot in this weather? Poor thing ..."

She suddenly remembered about the thing she had done to herself just earlier before, and wondered whether she should help the creature whose soft fur she was stroking just the same. She closed her left eye in focus, while the right one was open to make sure that nothing would go wrong in the process ... and thought about the pleasant situation of snow against her skin, soft and cool as the chill would spread through her nerves ...

... and just like that, the lynx's fur had the slightest touch of ice coating the tips of its tawny fur that melted like morning dew. Despite herself, Oddleif let out a gasp of surprise - even though she was aware that she had made it happen, it was still a shock to realize that it worked.

"Oh mein Gott! It worked ...!" She exclaimed to herself as she patted down the moisture on the lynx's fur - again, not thinking that perhaps the creature didn't intend on getting wet like that ...

Yet again Samael found himself almost purring at the hands of the girl, first as she began to pet him, her fingers running through his fur smoothly and carefully, so unlike most people who usually made him wince at least once because they were pulling his fur, then as she began to massage him, a fact that made it even more clear that she obviously she knew her way around cats, though the skill was probably learned on the kind that didn't at some point have to turn back into a human male, for she certainly wasn't a shifter herself and had not obviously met any before today.

Samael felt the sleepiness which had caused him to lay down here in the first place slowly taking over his consciousness as the pleasant feeling of the girl's fingers in his fur and against his skin lulled him close to sleep despite the somewhat loud alarm bells going on and on inside his mind how he really should stop this, now, he was not an actually cat and he didn't even know this girl. She seemed harmless though, or at least not threatening, talking happily as she petted him about someone named Belle and sharp teeth, as well as washing a Sandor with a new shampoo. Hazily he realised she was talking about other cats, real cats, and he wondered if he should gently remind her that she had just seen him turn into a cat from a human, for even though he was a shifter, and his other shapes were just as much him as his human form was, he was a shifter first and fore most, and not some wild animal. All thoughts of this however were suddenly gone as he felt something cold wash against his fur. The tips of his thick, too thick for summer really as he had inherited a body of a cat build for cold and snow, suddenly felt like ice, and it spoke to something primal and instinctual inside him. He had felt snow against his fur only a few times in his life, and it had always just felt so right, every time, including now.

The girl exclaimed something, obviously surprised, as he opened his eyes, arching his head so he could look first at his beck then and her, all the while actually letting out a quiet, soft, purr-like sound, indicating that he was very, very happy with what had just happened. Cryokinesis he thought, having been made wide awake by the feeling of snow-cold something against his back, no matter how pleasant it was, it was still cold and somewhat surprising. The ice had melted now though, and his fur felt soggy and wet at the places where it did so. It was still better than scourging heat though, so he just let it be, as he focused back on the girl's surprise. She was definitely new if her expression was anything to go by, and probably still raw at controling her powers. Something like this must have felt like more than magic to her. Samael found himself smiling, remembering the first time his brother had successfully turned and the feeling of pride which erupted inside him as he watched it happen. It was not quite the same, the girl still being a complete stranger to him, and his brother being his brother, but still he felt like he needed to congratulate her somehow. He bumped his head against her forearm again, smiling, in a cat like way of course.

Oddleif could hardly believe that her little 'trick' had worked - that all she ever had to do was to think about it, to focus ... and then magic would happen. This was her gift - to make ice appear from her fingertips, out of thin air ... or perhaps there was a complicated process and ritual behind her powers, but she knew too little to worry about it. For now, she was just incredibly happy to realize that she could do something so cool ... in quite the literal sense.

And she was even more relieved to find that the lynx didn't react poorly to her little magic display - where most cats didn't quite enjoy getting wet (she knew this from watching Belle the lion), it looked like the thickly-furred creature that was purring in her hands had enjoyed it. Perhaps he was a snow-cat of sorts? She learned that tigers like Sandor lived in some pretty warm places, so they liked going for a bath from time to time ... what made this particular feline different, considering that he didn't rush to nip at her hands for getting his beautiful fur all damp?

On the contrary! Oddleif found herself giggling as the lynx nudged her forehead with his nose, which prompted a soft, warm blush to rise in her cheeks, quite noticeable even under the shade of the tree considering how pale she was.

"Heh ... thanks, I guess. Sorry I got you all wet ... I'm still kinda new with all this ... gift ... thing ..." Odd spoke out loud, stammering a little halfway through as she realized just how clueless she sounded. She really had no idea how everything worked, though it did little to dampen her enthusiasm. She hoped that the people at the Academy here were going to teach her to do a lot more than rub up some snow to cool off a cat, though ...

Oddleif shrugged her shoulders and scratched the lynx between his fur-tufted ears. "Yours seems like a cool one, though. I wonder whether it's possible to teach me how to turn into a cat, too?" She asked absentmindedly, at first ...

.... but after several moments passed, gold-flecked emerald eyes snapped wide open as she realized what she was doing.

Didn't she just watch that cute red-haired guy turn into a lynx?

This very same lynx that she was casually petting just now?

........ oohhhh snowballs, this got awkward really fast.

Oddleif gasped out sharply as her hand quickly flitted away from the lynx's head and flinched backward a little - the soft blush that began to contour her cheeks earlier only grew more noticeable, turning from a rosy pink to a bright tomato-red.

It took the ashen-haired girl several seconds more to lightly poke at the air, trying her best not to make the situation any more awkward than it had suddenly just turned out to be.

"... you're a guy, aren'tcha?"

Damn it, Odd, that wasn't very smooth ...

Cats do not laugh, not like humans do, deep from their belly and full heartedly, with good-natured amusement sparkling in their eyes as they do so. Their bodies just aren't build for that, considering that they, as such, don't really have any need for it. Samael still tried though, the laugh coming out in the end in a form of a soft huff and an almost rolling of his eyes. He had yet to manage a good, successful eye roll in cat form, though considering his friends and family (mostly younger brother) it was not from the lack of trying.

Still, that alone if nothing else was the proof that human body was simply better suited for some things. Conversations of any kind, for example, especially with strangers who did not know how to read your body language and cat-like-smiles, even though they did seem to understand cats in general just fine. Thus, he found himself standing up again, somewhat soon, but he didn't care any more. He took a few steps forward, away from the girl, giving himself space he needed to turn back without making this any more awkward for her.

''It would appear so'', he said once he turned back into a form that could actually speak human language instead of just understanding it. He knew he should not tease, and a part of him was already scolding him for it, but somehow, he just could not resist. It was the lack of serious responsibility, he thought, the down time was making him too relaxed. Perhaps he should ask father to return to work earlier than planned...

That, however, was a debate for another time. ''And you're welcome, I guess, though you don't really need to worry about getting me covered with water. It is quite hot outside'', he continued, choosing his words carefully as he sat back to the place he had occupied before in his other form. It was slightly more uncomfortable sitting there like this, but he would survive. It was not the end of the world. And he really did feel much more comfortable about the temperature without the fur.

''Unfortunately though, turning yourself into something else is a hard thing to learn and is mostly connected to bloodlines, so I am not sure whether you could be taught to do so'', he answered her last question, the one that had obviously made her remember what she appeared to think was ''the coolest thing she had ever seen''.

''You seem to have other gifts, however'', he said, rising an eyebrow. ''And they are quite cool in their own way, are they not?'' It was a terrible pun, So terrible that it could probably lighten any room and cause anyone to smile.

Odd tried not to flinch again when the lynx stood up and easily put some distance between them with feline grace, instead bringing her twitchy hand to rub at the skin of her cheeks, like she was trying to get rid of the awkward blush that made her appear like a tomato with white hair and green eyes. This time, she also averted her gaze, more than aware that it was rude to stare at people, never mind when they are changing forms ... it's almost like they're changing into a new set of clothes - you wouldn't want to stare at them as they do that, would you?

Nevertheless, Oddleif was quick to pick up the trace of sass in the man's voice as he spoke, only for her to answer back with an unceremonious and unladylike gigglesnort. "Appearances can be deceivin', though." She cheekily quipped. "Your hair's probably longer than mine, and I'm a girl ... that, and I didn't just turn into a cat a while ago."

The girl managed to relax, already putting the past awkwardness behind her, making herself comfortable by stretching her legs on the patch of shady grass they were under, only to cross them underneath her and sit in a lotus position, her hands resting on her knees. She went silent for the moment being as she listened to what the man was saying, only for her lower lip to quiver into a disappointed pout at hearing his answer on shapeshifting.

"... Aww, bummer. I want to turn into a cat too ... that way, everyone would pet me and give me treats and I could sleep in the sun all day and chase mice all night."

Hearing the pun, however, did indeed bring back the young woman's cheer back as she winked at Samael and grinned brightly at him. "What can I say, eh? I'm a pretty cool gal, heheh!~" She joked with a laugh, before continuing to speak. "Admittedly I don't know much about the things I can do ...but I hope it's something pretty awesome. Maybe ... I can make a frozen palace to live in, or freeze a mountain ... or ice sculptures! People like those, right?"

''Of course it's long'', Samael said, huffing again, this time in human form and fully intending for a huff to come out as such, instead of it replacing a laugh. ''It would be a damn shame to keep it short, don't you think?'', he asked, looking at the girl as he played with a strand of the said hair almost absent mindedly. It was something he often did, the length and especially colour of his hair being a something he was extremely proud of and never ashamed to admit so.

''Also, if I remember correctly, turning into a cat ''is the coolest thing ever'' according to you'', he teased, leaning back against the tree which was providing them with shade and a brief reprieve from the sun. ''And I'm not even a cat, mind you, at least not of the household kind.'' Technically, in his human form, he had no advantages of his animal side. Still, sometimes he felt like his body would keep some of that feline grace and ease with which the body moved when it knew exactly what each of its muscles was supposed to do, the arrogance of a cat sometimes visible in his smile, like just now for example.

Then he remembered he was not supposed to tease, especially not strangers, girls and those younger than himself, and this girl matched two of those categories surely, and most probably all three. His expression grew more serious, though he did not apologizes as he initially wanted to, for at least it seemed that most of the awkwardness had gone out of the air, at least for now.

''Perhaps during the summer time. You would not be allowed to skip classes come fall, you know'', he told her, speaking from personal experience with things such as not going to stupid stuffy school and going to lie on a branch somewhere instead. ''And mice aren't all that tasty unless you are an actual cat, believe me.'' This he had not personally experienced, but the disgust on his brother's face had been good enough of a proof for him all these years.

''Ice sculptures are always appreciated'', he laughed at her enthusiasm, even though it was laced with doubted and all the tail tell signs of being unsure of oneself.

''Though perhaps at some other time of year. They would just melt into puddles right now, wouldn't they?'', he said, tilting his head, before he realised he had forgot something important. ''By the way, I'm Samael'', he said, offering his hand to the girl. ''Samael Fein Carnige.''
