Chloe had her offering in hand. A paper plate with a stack of cookies on top, all covered in saran wrap to keep them from falling off or being contaminated. She had an envelope, too. It was a thank you note, sealed with wax.

Malara hadn't wanted her to do this, but Chloe insisted. She wanted to mend bridges. They had a terrible first impression on each other. She didn't expect that this would work. Jackal must have had a really good reason to hate Malara as much as he did. She knew Malara had done a lot of bad things.

She knocked on the door to his apartment. Hopefully someone would be home, either him or the postwoman he apparently lived with. Ideally, it would be the post-woman, and so Chloe could leave her little offering and her note and never have to talk to Jackal directly again. She was already having second thoughts, waiting at the door for an answer.

Jackal did not get visitors. Not really. The only person he consistently met was Ralf, and he (and anyone else who wanted to visit) tended to just call. Way easier to do, especially considering that Jackal was on the third floor.

So when someone rang the doorbell, Jackal grinned his little grin and decided to go terrorize whatever door to door salesman had decided to bother him. It wouldn't be the first time, but he was sort of surprised it wasn't.

The last guy did not look happy when he fled.

So when Jackal pulled the door open and was faced with note a salesman, but Malara's girl--what was her name, Chloe?--his face went from 'shark about to bite prey' to 'mildly confused'. Wasn't Malara supposed to leave him alone?

And then his eyes fell on the plate--cookies?--and his eyebrows went up.

Okay, what the hell was this? He stared down at her--literally towering over her--and waited for her to explain without a word.

Chloe felt him on the other side of the door, so she knew he was coming. And even then, she - well, she didn't quite flinch, it was just that she very abruptly remembered how large and intimidating and imposing he was, and she might have reacted physically to this fact.

"M-malara told me not to do this," she started. "But Khalida was a real source of stress for some of us back here, and - I know you hate Malara, but the people who like her really appreciate that you kept her safe through all that. So."

She held the cookies and the note out.

"I wanted to thank you."

Cookies? Cookies. She'd brought him cookies. As a thank you for murdering Khalida.

Well, stranger things had happened on the island. It wasn't like (reasonably speaking) he could get poisoned. She was guilty, but Jackal had never been clear on how his powers would interact with long term plans like poisoning. He'd probably die? But then he'd come back and could ruin their lives in a completely non-power related way.

Jackal continued to squint.

"Eh, don't hate her that much," he finally said, reaching out and scooping up the plate of cookies. "Stuff makes a lot more sense when you look at her mom and go 'oh, she's the biggest, baddest bitch around'."

Jackal paused, staring down at the girl on her doorstep. How had Malara even ended up with her, anyway?

"Malara show you a picture of the spear I stole?"

Jackal didn't know the half of it. He and Malara would have needed to talk about it on their trip, and Chloe was under the impression that didn't happen so much. Whatever Malara had done to Jackal before coming here, it was probably Khalida's fault as far as Chloe was concerned.

"She didn't tell me about the spear." The question surprised her. She sort of thought he would just want her to fuck off. "Was it one of Khalida's?" A divine magical spear from another planet would be extremely cool, the kind of thing her dad would have been jealous of.

Jackal shoved the door open, waving Chloe in as he pulled back from the door, heading across the mostly empty main room towards the door of the bedroom. He wasn't gone long, returning from the bedroom with a massive ornate spear, which he held out for Chloe to inspect.

"Nah, not Khalida. Her chief angel. She chucked it at me and missed, and everyone looked all offended. Apparently she's never missed before or something like that, so I grabbed it and took it as my prize."

His only real prize from Mes, unless you counted the fact that somehow, all the Prax seemed to know. Even the ones who didn't keep up with the news.

Chloe hesitated, then followed Jackal inside. She didn't let the door to the apartment close all the way.

Jackal's story made her grin. There was something delicious about the hubris of a god, or a god's first in command. "First time for everything, I guess. That's awesome." How was he this much of a badass?

She was looking more closely at the spear now, imagining it in flight, thinking about the magic it might contain. She had read about stolen divine tools like this in grimoires. Some of those books were cursed so no one would learn of the author's crimes against the gods. Here she got to see such a thing in person. "Do you know if... Maybe the wings on it are for guiding it mid-flight? Or are they just decorative?"

Jackal pondered the spear as she mentioned the wings, reaching up to tug at the soft feathers.

"Decorative, I think. Or maybe they hold the magic in them. If they were intended to stabilize, they'd be at the back like an arrow." Jackal probably didn't look it, but he had a pretty good idea of how weapons worked. He couldn't have explained the exact mechanics, but he knew, for example, just how one made a proper arrow.

"Don't know all that much about magic," Jackal said, noting the spears balance as he held it carefully. "But someone told me it's definitely magic. The spear as a whole, anyway. I'm not really surprised, but it hasn't done anything special for me just yet."

Jackal might not have known a lot about magic, but Chloe did. "I could probably help with that, if you want to figure out what kind of magic stuff it can do. And I know some other people who could."

The academic in her was getting the better of her. She wanted to learn about the cool magic item. Holy and unholy magic, especially, drew her to them. She wondered if she could even touch this thing without getting hurt. Could divine power hurt her that easily, if it was some kind of space-god's divine power? Jackal didn't seem so bothered holding it, but Chloe wasn't sure what he was.

"It's a really impressive piece of gear, though. Thanks for showing it to me!" She smiled. All in all, this meeting was going much better than expected. She hadn't been told to 'fuck off' or anything.

Well, he'd shown it off, but it was time for the spear to go back. Jackal propped it up against the wall, deciding to put it away properly later, and turned his attention back to Chloe.

"So yeah, thanks for the cookies," he said, having totally put them on the counter on the way in. "And, uh, nice to see you?" He didn't sound entirely certain about that, but at least he didn't sound angry or anything.

"I guess you need to get back to... wherever... you live with Malara?" Did she even live with Malara? He genuinely didn't know. The nature of Malara's relationships were a mystery to him, even after their roadtrip together. She was definitely with Pandora--who'd ran off to hell or something while they were gone--and there was Jafar, who had been kidnapped. And then some other people? Was she even officially with Malara?
