"C'mon... C'mon..."

It was a Friday night, which meant school was out and many young people were kicking off the weekend. No place knew this more than the amusement park located near the piers. Pouring with lights and colors against the dimming evening sky, the place drew in kids like a moth to a flame. For Polly, it was more like a bat to an arcade. At least literally, anyway.

Pollyanna wasn't very good at video games, but the bright lights that flashed on and off and the temptation to win things was enough to draw her in. She was alone, but she didn't mind. All she cared about in the present moment was the stack of stuffed animals inside a claw machine. Especially one that happened to be a giant, pink fluffy bunny.

"Aaaaand, go!"

She pressed the button after lining it up what seemed to be perfectly, which sent the claw downwards and around the head of said bunny. Like a child window-shopping at a candy store her face was pressed tautly against the glass in hopes that the prize would be hers. It grabbed, and came up perfectly. Unfortunately..

"Aw, darnit!" The rigged claw caused the bunny to slip out of its clutches, thus eating up another dollar of Polly's hard earned money. She sighed, but ultimately shrugged it off. Oh well. Maybe this would have been easier if she was in her true form, but she didn't want to scare anyone. She could try again, or...

Her head turned as her hand jostled the cup that had a pile of coins in it. Looking for a game that seemed easy, or was interesting to watch. It was soon after in her panoramic view that she found one that flashed twenty different colors it seemed. It looked fun, yet didn't have too many around it, minus a girl that was already there. Smiling, Polly approached to wait in line. Or watch. Whatever it was, Polly's eyes were glued to the screen. Maybe she was standing a bit too close, but Polly didn't know the wiser. She was just having fun through observation, and her naiveté could take her one of two routes. Hopefully not the kind that would have her punched in the face.

Olivia loved arcades, and she was pretty darn good at arcade games. Her favorites were the different fighting games, and the one she had picked for today was her favorite in the entire arcade. It looked like today she had a watcher, so she decided to show off. Olivia went into the character select screen for a single match against a high level computer, the music started coming out of the machine.

"Select the one to fight with! Lets get it on! 10 9 8 7 6!"

Olivia picked the pretty chinese girl with the huge thighs, then she had to choose what super move she wanted.

"Pick and choose the right one! Lets get it on! 5 4 3 2 1!"

She choose the second option. The game loaded up and threw her into the fight.

"Are you ready? Go!"

She immediately had the character jump and land a mid air hard kick, which quickly transitioned into a crouching medium kick, then a standing light into standing heavy, then she crossed them up by jumping over them and landing another mid air hard kick, then when she was back on the ground she rapidly tapped hark kick, which made the character deliver tons of kicks. The computer player was about out of health so Olivia activated her super move, she put in two quarter circles and then a kick, which made the character glow blue and send out a million kicks a second, this finished off the computer opponent and ended the first round.

Olivia fist bumped and waited for the next round to start up.

Street fighter, huh?

Polly wasn't paying much attention to the title or concept. No, she was looking at the lady's avatar, who seemed to be pretty good at what she was doing. Punches and kicks everywhere... Had Polly not been attempting to contain her hyperactivity, she just might be cheering. But for now, her eyes were wide and her mouth was shut. The CPU on the other side of the screen stood no chance against the stranger Polly was watching. And in a few moments, everything seemed to come to a conclusion.

A perfect K.O!

Polly clapped a bit to herself, the coins shaking in her cup. "Great Job!!" Polly cheered, thought scantly tried to quiet herself. Hoping that the girl wouldn't turn around and look at her like she was crazy. And if she did... A red splash came across her cheeks. "I mean uh... You're much better than I am. How'd you do it?"

Olivia had the girl behind her excited and cheering for her, rad! She only had a couple of seconds to give a quick response. "I just play this game all the time! Plus the CPU isnt as good as a real player."

"Are you ready? Go!"

The CPU used its super move and threw out a huge fireball, Olivia only had a few seconds to react, and instead of blocking she performed three quick parrys on it, taking no damage from the fireball. She had the character dash over to the computer player and do a few crouching kicks, and then turned that into a special move "spinning bird kick.", a few more kicks and Olivia could activate her super again, which ended the match. Her character jumped up and down a few times, gave a peace sign, and said "Yata!" which Olivia was pretty sure meant "I did it!". Since she had gotten a perfect round the announcer said "Alright thats cool! You win!" which Olivia loved hearing.

The screen flashed "Winner! Chun Li!" and gave a rating for how good she had done. Olivia stepped back from the machine and turned to the person who had been watching her, "Yeah I play this one a lot, so ive gotten pretty good at it. My names Olivia by the way!"

Like jingling keys over a baby, Polly had her attention glued on the flashing screen that the girl was playing on. Her eyes only took the focus off of it just for a second to flick to the face of the other, though was still in so much of a trance that she didn’t really focus on the features of her. Not like she had time to anyway, for the game she was playing required an immediate response. And so, the process would start over again.

The spectator didn’t at all know what was going on, minus the fact that the girl with the buns in her hair was wailing on the other one. But she started to pick up a few pieces here and there. The buttons the stranger was pressing each did different tasks, and if pressed in an order something special would happen. At least, so she thought. She had a lot of questions, but in order to keep the other focused she kept her mouth shut.

Soon enough her patience was rewarded again. The stranger once more won, received by a small excited bounce from Polly. She grinned once more while staring at the screen for a bit longer. She would have kept staring too, if it wasn’t for the winner of the game’s words to snap her back into reality.

She turned to look at the other, who introduced herself as Olivia. It was a pretty name, so she was sure to etch it in her flighty memory. "Oh! Well, it’s nice to meet you too Olivia! Oh, and congrats on winning!" She stuck her hand out, in the form of a shake. "My name is Pollyanna. I’m sorta… New at video games, so it’s nice to see someone so good at them!" She chuckled sheepishly, before continuing. "I’m only good at losing a few dollars in coins after a minute or two of trying, haha..."

She turned to Polly who was cheering her on and gave a big grin and a thumbs up. Olivia took the girls hand and gave it a kind shake.

"Nice to meet you Pollyanna."

She was thinking about what she had said, about being bad at video games...

"Well if you uh... if you want any help getting better at games I could probably help out."

Shaking the girls hand, Pollyanna was more than pleased to meet a new friend. Or at least, someone who eventually would grow to be a friend. Hopefully.

The smile remained on her face as the other made a rather kind offer on her behalf. Polly perked up, her head tilting slightly. "You really mean it?" She asked to clarify. "Well... I would certainly appreciate it. Thank you!" Being good at arcade games would come in handy. After all, she wanted to exchange tickets for prizes. She couldn't quite do that if it took her all day to win just one ticket.

With that, she looked around. Scanning the arcade, as if to wonder what would be best to start out with. Would it be the game Olivia was playing...? Hm, probably not. It looked a bit complicated to get into. "So... What do you think I should try first..? I tried that game with that little yellow circle that eats other circles... But a ghost kept getting me and I didn't last very long..."

"Oh yeah pac-man! I dont know a whole lot about that game but I can give a few tips for sure!"

Olivia cracked her knuckles and thought about different pac man strategys to share.

"When you start the game, always take out the bottom rows first, those are a lot more dangerous that the top ones, also the pink and blue ghosts are a lot more aggressive than the others so you should prioritize those two."

Those where the biggest tips she could give, but did she have more? She racked her brain for some more PacMan tips...

Pac Man! That was it! It was a good thing Polly had met this new friend, because otherwise she wouldn’t have remembered the title of the game. Her memory was dodgy like that, working better with remembering pictures and colors rather than text. At least that explained why she was such a slow learner, especially at school.

But, she didn’t let that get her down. It just meant things would be a bit more of a challenge. Lucky for her, Polly was an optimist. So she wasn’t going to give up, at least. "Oh yea, Pac Man! Thank you!" Polly chirped in gratitude, something she might be doing a lot around Olivia. For now though, Polly decided it would be best to be quiet and listen. Nodding intently as she tried to ingrain every tip into her scatterbrain. "Bottom rows, avoid the blue and pink ghosts. Got it." She nodded with a smile, before looking over to the arcade cabinet a few feet away. "You know, I thought at first that the ghosts were good guys and you were supposed to touch them when they’re all different colors. I dunno why, but I learned pretty quickly that that’s not the case..."

Enough of that though. Polly led herself and her new friend back over to the old arcade cabinet. Almost three decades old and still going strong by the looks of it. She dug into her pocket and pulled out a quarter. Maybe with these new tips in her mind, she could stand the chance at beating the first level. She held the coin chest-level, rubbing it nervously with her thumb. She glanced back to Olivia. "Is there anything else you think is really important to know?"

Olivia walked with Polly to the old machine, despite being so ancient, it was still in good shape. She gave the batgirl another thumbs up.

"I cant really think of anything else to teach you, I think you should be pretty good now. Good luck!"

Of course tips and tricks could only take you so far, a big part of it was practice.
