Huh, seemed that the guy had a lot of words to say about royalty. Was land royalty really that horrendous and just for decoration? He didn't know, and at the moment he would've asked had more important matters not been at hand. He made note to do so later on, when the time called for it and perhaps in more casual conversation.

As for human culture... Ah, he knew enough about past human culture, or at least shards of it from what he ate, destroyed and hoarded treasures from. A lot of it had to do with sea travel and naval warfare. More recent culture was, in fact, along those lines and even more so now that it was better recorded. Land culture, though? No. He could navigate that like an awkward, socially inept teenage human male navigating human females.

"Well, you guys sure like starting wars and pointing your projectiles at each other." Not like the Panthalassians could say much, considering they were in the middle of a war dragged from ancient times. "You have a very storied history with the sea. You didn't master it until fairly recently, too."

As for current culture... "Humans don't quite like confrontation; you aren't as physical as my kind. At least, most of the time. You have particular foods that you eat with pronged utensils, and you don't like nudity. Well, you do but only the idea of it. Sometimes. But become quite offended when anybody actually offers nudity. You have a very strange idea of sexuality. But anyways," He thought for a moment more.

"You all are quite varied, but are offended by differences, too. In fact, you're quite an offended species. You have rulers who are for the people in theory and are voted to power, but they all say that on both accounts. You become quite anxious over a points system called 'money' but I'm not quite sure what that's about, I've only gotten brief interaction with it." There was plenty more about food, literature, technology... Too much to sum up.

Somehow, he'd expected Ulrich to know more. He'd expected him to have a more or less correct understanding of human social customs. Or at least an outdated one. Instead, the vast majority of what he said could have been hundreds of years old, if not even older. Nicolas made a noise of exasperation, reaching up with his hand to rub at the bridge of his nose, trying to come up with a way to handle it.

"I wouldn't exactly call us warlike. We tend to dislike war, but it becomes inevitable when you have a large and varied species competing for land, natural resources, and who knew what else. Either way, about sixty years ago we developed what's basically the ultimate weapon, and we used it - and since then we've had basically no large scale wars, because no one is willing to risk it being used against them. Mutually assured destruction."

A bit more than sixty years ago, but who was counting?

"We are slow to heal compared to a lot of animals, and we can't regenerate limbs or anything, so yeah, we avoid fighting when we can. We live in a civilized society, so randomly fighting with other people is considered a really fucked up thing. You should be talking it out." He skipped over the utensils entirely, deciding to talk a bit about money... and then sex.

"In the old days if you wanted milk from someone's cow, you had to trade him something. If you didn't have something, you had to give him your word you'd give him something. But then if he needed something, he could give his word that he'd give them whatever you were going to give him... so we just made money. It's basically a big way of doing IOUs. Do work. Get paid. Pay others with money." Simple enough.

Sex was going to be... less easy to explain.

"Anything related to sex is generally taboo to talk about. Explaining why would take a year, but being naked is considered a sex thing, so you shouldn't do it. People only want people to do anything sex related with people you're in love with, or at least in a relationship with. If you try and do otherwise it's generally a bad thing." He'd oversimplified by far.

Humans were so downright complex that he was well aware it'd be difficult to wrap his head around in just one session. No, they needed to sit down a lot, talk about it, go through it all bit by bit. He'd be glad to teach Nicolas about the Panthalassians in turn, but he doubted the redhead was interested.

Talking it out, huh? It sounded rather... well, complicated. Words could be misinterpreted, and there was this thing called passive aggression and... Well, he didn't like the idea of not fixing things with either fighting or sex. That's how they did it among his own kind, mostly the former but occasionally the latter. And apparently sex was also a taboo.

"How strange of you humans to think of it that way." But then again, humans probably thought of his ways of life strange, too. Not that he'd be any more open to it, but he needed to blend in. So he supposed instigating a fight with someone while naked was a no-go.

"So tell me about humans, then. What's important to you?" And what wasn't? How did their lore go? What did many of them find interesting? How was their society run? He had quite a few curiousities about the whole thing, but that would take a while longer to figure out.

He hadn't intended for the second part to sound so personal, though.

The redhead was indeed not terribly interested. In fact, the less he knew about the monsters that had cost him his arm, the better. He wanted to know what he'd need to know, but he'd never really need to know the customs of a race he'd never visit. He didn't like the sea, and the idea of being invited to some massive feast with horrible monsters under the sea was like something out of his nightmares.

The next question he was asked was so vast that all he could do was sit there for a few moments, trying to wrap his head around it. What was important to humans? God, that was a question that someone could get three degrees on and still not have a solid answer. All he could think of as an answer was just throwing out the first things that popped into his mind. He didn't take it personally at all.

"Varies by person. Family. Friends. Loved ones. Money. Their career. Loyalty. Their own personal ethics." Every person had their own personal set of things that mattered. Some couldn't care less for family, but cared a lot about careers. Some cared nothing for money but everything for friends. There was no one right answer. "Some people care more about honor than anything else. Some people care only for themselves. Some care more about a spouse, or family. Some put everything into their careers. Some people have distinct dreams, like becoming famous. Surely your kind has that sort of individuality?" Or maybe they didn't. Maybe they all had a single guiding cause. How strange that would be.

Ulrich sat back, winding his fingers together on his lap with a curious sort of cock of his brow. So humans were just as varied as their body types. Money, power, family... There was quite a few indications that this man's main motivator was the former. He didn't seem to have family as far as his spies had reported trying to track him down, and he'd rapidly slid in rank since he'd first seen him. The gap between that time and just a year ago was a mystery, but Ulrich didn't need to be concerned for that.

Still, Nicolas only answered half his question even if he was good at guesses.

"More or less." He nodded. "Individual preferences vary, but there is a tendency for our kind to be born with the grudges our forefathers bared. The majority of us are strongly motivated towards eliminating the opposing royal family." In his case, that meant the southern Panthalassians would fight viciously with a northern Panthalassian almost right out of the egg.

And when he said 'born with grudges', he wasn't joking. Memories were melded into their genetics; it wasn't rare to have a young one hatch and hate a particular person right off the bat, only to grow up and realize their father and great grandfather hated them, too.

"But what is important to you?" He repeated, deciding to be patient just as Nicolas needed to be patient with him.

Nicolas had left his family behind a long time ago. Power held no draw for him. Even then, Ulrich was wrong about him - it wasn't money that motivated him. Money was a means to an end, a way to continue living. His drive had been his honor, his duty. His job. And that was gone now.

The idea of being born with hatred, as opposed to being taught it, seemed... wrong. Bizarre. Humans could make the choice not to teach their children their grudges. They could try, as best they could, to put aside their hatreds. Every generation got a bit better, hated a bit less.

He let out a little huff as Ulrich came back to the original point. He hadn't wanted to answer, but Ulrich was his boss, and he couldn't exactly not answer the person who was paying him what amounted to a literal boatload of money.

"For one thing, it's considered pretty rude to ask humans questions like this, so don't go demanding other people answer - you'll just come off like a lunatic." Better clarify that before he did just that. "My career was. My teammates were." And he didn't feel like anything was ever going to fill those holes. They would always be there, reminding him of what he'd lost, as if his arm didn't do enough of a job of that.

They were born with hatred, but also love towards individuals, kindness towards certain factions and occasionally, vivid memories of past events. Ulrich could remember the splitting of the two branches of the royal family as if he had been sitting front row and center, even though he was born three generations after the fact. He was fairly certain Emma could remember shards of the event as well, if not the whole thing.

Pretty rude? Also rather strange. Panthalassians were the blunt sort who asked what they thought and didn't try to cover it up. It just seemed so much more productive that way, getting right to the point without bothering with formalities and beating around the bush. No matter, he'd take Nicolas' advice. He was supposed to be the human expert.

"I see." And, as far as Ulrich knew, both had been irrevocably taken away. So what was important now, or was that, too, rude to ask? Ulrich just reclined back further in his chair, comfortable and soft but so foreign at the same time. "I should make some sort of notebook for all of this. It is quite a bit of information that would be similar enough to get confused."

Somehow, he doubted that a race of giant sea monsters had a concept of paper notebooks. Whatever he'd use to write it down would probably not work above water at all. "I'll go into town later today and get you a notebook or two. I want to take a look around anyway." Get a lay of the land, so to speak. He wanted to get an idea of just how big the island was, and just how big the settled part of it was. There was no way the whole island was settled, because it had seemed massive compared to Mayotte, but he'd also never heard of it. If it was really fully settled, there was no way he could not have heard of it.

"You should try and walk around and get used to being in a human body." As much as he was tempted to go into the island proper right then, he was tired. Sleeping on rocks that couldn't even be considered islands was not comfortable. "Are we handling our own food, or what? What do you even eat?" Good god, was he going to have to cook? Or was it going to be takeout forever?

Assuming the island had takeout.

Ulrich made a faint displeased noise, almost like a grunt, still rather used to making various noises to voice his displeasures or amusement. "I have owned a human body for longer than you have been alive." He used the same template, more or less. He could change a few minor physical characteristics, but generally it was all very similar. Physical injuries, like the various scars, remained the same across all forms.

"I am well aware of how to use one. It is your customs that I have troubles with." Even though having so few limbs seemed counterproductive, at least he knew how to use said limbs. Fingers had been hard to figure out but he'd done it. Only being able to look in a single direction had been the hardest part.

As far as food went, Ulrich gave a small shrug. "I somehow doubt you'd find my eating habits very tasteful." Raw fish, raw fish, a couple of seals, maybe a shark or giant squid and more raw fish. Seaweed was also nice, and he had to admit that Emma made some very good rock salt cookies, not that he'd ever admit it.

"But your food will be taken care of." Or rather, money for food will be taken care of. If they were in the sea, he'd send his guards off to find something suitable. On land, his guards were unfortunately absent.

Nicolas was less than convinced. He'd walked oddly getting out of the water, and he still vocalized strangely. He might pass as human most of the time, but he was passing as a weird human. He would be passing as a human who grunted like a caveman for a good chunk of their communication. He had a hard time imagining that Ulrich would pass as human long term.

"Knowing how to use one in theory and actually being able to use one are different. You might be older than I am, but that doesn't mean you've had as many years on land as I have." He doubted Ulrich came out of the sea much, considering how much he seemed to dislike it.

"Taken care of? Be specific. Am I cooking? Am I picking up food? Are you going to have a giant squid preparing my food on a seaside grill?" No, he didn't really think that last one was going to happen.
