Fuck, Diego was nervous. He was so nervous that he'd actually managed to not get lost and get to the cafe early. Diego had tried to work out some of his nerves at the gym earlier but it hadn't worked, rather his muscles kinda ached now. So, in order to avoid using them too much, Diego was hovering off the ground in front of the cafe, waiting for Kal. Their first meeting had been kinda awkward but Kal had seemed like a good guy. Despite that Diego was feeling scared that they wouldn't hit it off and this whole date would be a tense, awkward fiasco. Sure, it'd become a funny first date story later on, but in this moment it'd be torture.

For once Diego wasn't wearing a hoodie, he had on a green white and black flannel shirt that "complimented his eyes and hair" (mom's words) with a black t-shirt under it (no pictures or text this time), jeans and his cleanest Converse sneakers (Diego had multiple pairs, many of them had paint stains or small holes or wear in general). Diego had debated wearing a flower crown, as a kind of callback to their first meeting, but that'd been too much and so would've been bringing a flower bouquet with him (also one thing he had debated). This was just a casual date, probably a one-time thing, Diego shouldn't make a big deal out of it.
And despite telling himself that Diego was super nervous. Hopefully he wouldn't be a mess when Kal got here...

Kalvin grunted as he walked right out of the school grounds and into the edge of the town center. if he continued at this pace, he wouldn't be late, although he wouldn't really be early either. He pulled the sleeves of his plain grey button-up shirt down from around his elbows. It was the best shirt he had that best suited 'first date'. Also, he had had to do some washing at the last minute before he left the dorms, and he had no time to fold the sleeves neatly then. Now, his sleeves were creased and he had no idea how to fix them for his date.

Granted, he and Diego were only planning on getting coffee. It would only take a few minutes. An hour tops. They obviously both had things to do. Still, the fact that it was the first date required some modicum of formality, right? Kalvin hoped so. He didn't want to show up and look like a fool. No matter how stoic some people claimed he could be, he was actually a bit of an overthink too sometimes. Just like last night when he had minimal sleep not because of his insomnia (or maybe that had a hand in it too) but because of today's big event.

Soon, Kalvin was walking up the street where the Bearclaw Bakery was on. Like yesterday, he kept his hand and stub in his date-appropriate jacket pockets--it was only an old leather piece that may or may not have belonged to his father. Even from a distance, Kalvin could already see Diego outside the cafe. If it wasn't the vivid green palette, it was the floating that gave him away. Kalvin marched forward despite the excited ball of giddiness that was shooting around inside him. "I thought you'd be floating over the pavement," he teased once he was close enough to enter Diego's earshot. "How you doing?"

Diego's mind had already had enough time to run itself in so many circles that it was lost, and thus Diego didn't notice Kal before the guy spoke up. Diego snapped his head towards Kal and for few seconds he just stared before slowly grinning at the teasing. It put Diego at ease, he was a guy for whom humour was a big part of him so for Kal to start off teasing was a good sign in his book.

"Oh shit, I've become so predictable already?"
Diego said back, acting like he was shocked, but he was bad at it and very soon he was back to grinning. Diego lowered himself to the ground, and he noticed that Kal wasn't that much taller than him. An inch or so.
"I'm doing great! My muscles are just trying to kill me but I was asking for it with the killer workout I did."
Diego explained and chuckled, rubbing his shoulder and neck and grimacing a bit for dramatic effect.
"And you, bro? How's it goin'?"

Kalvin made a show of agreeing with Diego begrudgingly as he came down to the ground in front of him. "Yeah, pretty much. I can see you blushing within a few moments from now, too," he teased further, a small smirk at the corner of his lip. Then he released it and grinned back at the other.

At the mention of the workout, Kalvin's eyes went over Diego's lean form. It was impressive, and for a boy his age to be dedicated to keeping to good form, that was doubly impressive. He felt kind of glad that he wasn't the only one here who had to work to keep a good figure. Everyone else seemed to have it innately or were using those fancy charms. "You look like you could use a nice cup of coffee to help refuel those guns," he responded easily. "As for me, I've more or less just got out of class, which of course means I feel much better now. More relaxed and finally chill. AKA the perfect mood to go on a coffee-scented date."

He motioned towards the cafe. "Shall we?" he said, allowing Diego to walk into the establishment first. It was a good day for a date, apparently. When they entered, he saw that there were a few choices of booths for them to sit in. Not too many people were crowding the little place due to the hour of their arrival. He had no doubt that the mid-afternoon crowd would be pouring in soon, though.

Damn, Kal had more snark than he had let on. Diego kinda felt like blushing at just the mention that he would, since that insinuated that Kal would say or do something to make him blush. But Diego fought through it and crossed his arms, taking on a determined and defiant expression.
"Well now you're just making me want to prove you wrong. No way in hell am I going to blush. At least not within the next few moments."
Diego was just a human (more or less), he knew that he'd blush at least once during this date. But it wouldn't be within the next few moments!

Goddamn it, Diego almost blushed again when Kal took in his body, probably looking for the murderous muscles he had been talking about. Diego was clearly toned, not outrageously so but in a way that made it obvious he worked out. And Diego was very proud of the level of muscle mass he'd reached, it was really hard for him to be muscular. He was lanky and slim by nature.
"Hell yeah. A gun without bullets is just a really bad club. You've obviously got some guns too, lets both load up these bad boys."
Diego said and chuckled. The fact that Kal admitted out loud that this was a date made him weirdly embarrassed but happy, but yet again Diego downright refused to blush. Not yet, he'd have to hold it just a bit more...

Diego entered the store, and out of habit held the door open for Kal as he took in the place. It was real nice. Diego usually didn't go to bakeries or cafes that much, but he wouldn't mind coming here more often. Especially if Kal frequented the place...
"You said you got out of class, you in college?"
Diego asked, heading towards the counter where all the delicious-looking pastries were. Diego was more of a salty pastry guy, and thankfully there seemed to be a fair amount of those too.

Kalvin felt flattered that Diego even complimented him about his guns. He knew he was big and he'd heard compliment thrown at him about his build. However, none of them really got into his head. He realized it was probably because a lot of the people who appreciated it were acquaintances of his, or at least people that he just happened to know. None of them really had any big impact on his life overall. And if he was honest with himself, a lot of the attention he wanted was from certain beings. Maybe it was fortunate that he was never given more than what was appropriate by said beings. Otherwise, he doubted Diego's comment would've hit deep.

Kalvin followed Diego to the counter. "Yeah. I'm in my second year of bio sciences," he said as his eyes checked the pastries they had for today. He wasn't too fond of sweet edibles. He really more or less just came here for the coffee. He decided on a slice of apple pie. He also might get two of those regular donuts that didn't look like a visit to the dentist. He'd gone ahead and stepped forward to stand behind the last man in the short line. "What about you? You look like you're living in the golden era of high school."

"Bio sciences? Sorry, I'm kinda dumb, so I don't really know what that entails."
Diego said with an embarrassed lopsided grin and a shrug.
"Though if it has to do with biology then you might soon learn the difference between german and roman chamomile on your own."
Diego chuckled, and scanned the pastries as well. He considered keeping his thoughts to himself, but Diego was talkative and if that bothered Kal he would probably mention it.
"Damn, those ham cheese croissants look good. I'm not really that into sweets, to be honest. Though that apple pie might change my mind, it looks downright seductive."
Diego snickered at his own words and then looked at Kal.
"What're you gonna get?"

Kal was pretty close with his guess, but Diego still gasped a bit and looked scandalized (joking around, obviously).
"Wow, did you just assume my age? For all you know I might be a 1000 years old immortal who just likes acting like a dumbass."
Diego couldn't keep his face straight for long though, as he grinned and laughed a bit.
"You're almost right, depending on what 'golden era' of high school is. I'm gonna go to college after summer, tho I got held back in middle school so normally I'd be going to my second year of college."
Diego wasn't ashamed to admit that he'd been held back. He had always been kinda stupid, and back then had really not been a good time for him, so being held back had been unavoidable. So, he said it casually like it wasn't a big deal and it really wasn't, it was in the past.

Kalvin did a mental facepalm. He felt stupid for assuming Diego knew these things. Of course, not everyone knew what bio sciences entailed. "My bad. Biological sciences focus on living organisms. It's one of the best pre-med courses," he explained. He smiled at Diego's observation about the chamomiles and his course and bit his lip. "I'll be honest? I was only about 20% interested in their differences. Eighty percent of why I asked was so I could talk to you some more."

He glanced at the ham and cheese croissants when Diego mentioned them, now considering them too. He might actually get one of those. "Oh, I'm gonna get a lot. You might be surprised at how much I eat. It's... a side effect of my abilities," he confessed. "I'll get some of that seductive apple pie you mentioned, some more donuts, and... maybe some of the ham and cheese croissants now that you mentioned them. Oh, for my coffee... I'm thinking about getting one large caramel mocha."

He smiled and raised an eyebrow at Diego's reaction to his guess. He knew the kid was joking around, but he couldn't be a hundred percent sure that Diego may not really be an immortal. He was 95% sure at least, if anything. No immortal wanted to go back and repeat their education over and over, right? "Eh, I guess it depends on how you experience high school. For others, it can easily be he shittiest years in their lives," he shared. They stepped forward and were next to give their orders. He told the barista his pick and waited as Diego did the same. When they were waiting for their bread, he spoke up again. "You know, I got held back too. It's why I'm a little older than your average college student. I had to work for a few years to get by, but that was before I came here."

Diego was actually interested in what Kal explained about bio sciences. Partly because it was something he didn't know anything about, partly because it was Kal. Diego wanted to know stuff about him. Diego wanted to ask a bunch of other questions, but that might've been too much. Besides, the thing Kal said at the end about him only using the question to talk to Diego more made him want to blush. And few moments had already passed, so Diego did blush and let out a bit surprised and flustered laugh.
"You for sure achieved that then, even got a bad joke for your troubles."
Diego answered, rubbing his neck as he chuckled. He gave one of his brightest smiles as he added
"Thanks for asking that question, tho. We're here thanks to that, right?"

Diego snorted when Kal called the apple pie seductive like he had, and he felt relieved that Kal talked back at him. Obviously it was a given that when someone asks you a question you answer it but Diego had met some real curt people. Those types of people Diego always found really hard to be around, they reminded him of his dad. So he was real happy that Kal wasn't like that.
"We both fell victim for the apple pie, then. As for drink, I think I'm gonna take the dark chocolate cocoa. If I take caffeine now I'm gonna be bouncing off the walls and I don't wanna make you deal with that."
Diego chuckled and then checked out the doughnuts Kal mentioned as he answered further.
"I dunno your abilities but I'm not surprised, you're a strong-lookin' guy, gotta use something to fuel that body, right? Besides, it's pretty hard to surprise me. You're gonna have to try better than that."
Diego grinned bit mischievously (despite blushing 'cos he'd commented on Kal's nice body and that was embarrassing), he felt like Kal was a bit on the more serious side but as long as he didn't get offended or angry Diego kept being his goofy self. Being like that with more serious people than himself could be fun if those people could take jokes as jokes.

Diego didn't really comment on the comment about high school outside nodding, since for him it'd been tough. At least the first few years, before he went to rehab. And Diego wasn't about to talk about something that heavy on a first date. He was really pleasantly surprised that Kal had been held back too, though, and it showed from his smile.
"For real? Dude, I've never met anyone else who was held back! That's awesome. Not the getting held back, but getting to meet you."
Diego let out a small nervous, embarrassed laugh and blushed a bit.
"I don't think people in college are that tied to a certain age anymore, tho. Since many kinds of people go there to learn a new skill or job or just wanna deepen their education, ya know? Kinda like you worked for a few years before, I think that may be pretty common."
Diego said with a shrug and a small smile. He knew he was talking a lot, but that was just a sign that he was comfortable. And thus far Diego was having fun, the conversation wasn't awkward or anything and Kal was a good guy.

Kalvin would've said something about holding Diego down or against a wall. He didn't though because that was highly inappropriate for the time. This was still, what, their first date. And he didn't want to make Diego uncomfortable with sexual innuendos. They were far from that point in this thing they had going. Besides, it wasn't like he was thinking of Diego in that way (yet). "Good for you. I, on the other hand, need all the caffeine I can get to stay awake," he said instead. He grinned back at Diego for his comment about his body, noticing the blush that Kal predicted would come.

"Yeah, well. You're going to have to wait if you want surprises, then." Kalvin was glad that Diego didn't judge him for his eating habits. It was difficult for people outside of the island--the narrow reality, as others liked to call the rest of the world-- to not judge him. Some thought he was gifted with great genetics, to be able to eat so much and still stay in shape. Others envied it and chose to criticize him instead. It'd been difficult, but Kal had more or less gotten used to it. Now, he didn't care what others thought about the amount of food he eats. His date was different, of course. If they had any plans on continuing this thing that they had going, they needed to be okay with a lot of things about each other. Eating habits were one of those things. Diego's small talks and constant humor was another, apparently. Kalvin, for the moment, was okay with it--but, really, it was too early to say for sure.

"Yeah, that's true. And for all the effort they've or the society, rather, has put into turning primary and secondary schools into a rat race, college can feel like a whole other world. It's got less peer pressure and everybody's actually there to listen and learn," Kalvin said. Soon, they got their bread. He took the tray and let Diego lead the way to a booth of his choice. One hand gripped the edge of the tray while his stub supported the bottom as they walked to a set of table and chairs. He then slipped into one side and sat back in the plush seat on the wooden chair. "So, what are your preferred hobbies? Other than making cute flower crowns and flying around your shop, of course," he asked once they've settled in.
