He sat in the grass, his eyes locked on the sky above, he'd always lived in big cities, never gave much thought to the sky before.

He turned to his star eyed friend, he was still getting used to the idea of having a friend, hell he was still getting used to being around people his own age who weren't scared or abused.

He smiled, the Shadow was ranting in the back of his head but he ignored it. He wasn't going to let it ruin him enjoying time with his friends.

As she laid sprawled out on the grass, the girl with stars for eyes looked up at the great blue expanse of sky populated by lofty white clouds. As she looked up at the big ol' sky, a single thought was in her mind as she lifts up her arm to point out a distant cloud.

"... hey... you see that fat cloud over just over there? Kinda looks like looks like a dog pissing on fire hydrant. What do you think?"

At least that is what it looked like to her. Nyota had forgotten how how in the hell she got roped into watching with James. Was he the one who suggested it or was it her idea? Whatever the case, Nyota and James decided to spend the day watching clouds. It was kinda dumb but... oddly relaxing for her. Nyota suspected that it was the influence of the Three-Legged Crow's old memories that caused her to feel this way as she was never as interested in watching clouds before her little incident.

He laughed at that, lord it felt good to laugh, really good, he didn't remember ever laughing like this, "nah, its not a fire truck...its a dragon breathing fire and the dogs putting it out."

YOU AND YOUR SHINY EYED GIRLFRIEND ARE DULL! AT LEAST DO SOMETHING INTERESTING! Oh shut up, I have your powers, so your nothing but a headache! His mind went silent for a sec, the the Shadow released a screach that seemed to bouce from one side of his skull to the other. He grabbed his head, the pain waving over his head.

For a time he just sat there holding his head, waiting for the pain to subside. When it finally did sweat was beginning to form on his forehead. He rubbed the sides of his head and pointed to random cloud, "what do you think that one looks like?" He didn't want Nyota to have to deal wirh his problems, and he wouldn't let the Shadow ruin a day with his new friend.

"Huh... well I guess its about to become a hot dog then right?"

Nyota looked over to James with a wry grin but it quickly changes to a concerned frown as Jame looked as if was dealing with a head-splitting migraine. She had almost asked him if he was going to be alright but James was quick to ask her about another cloud. Nyota raised an eyebrow to him but complied as she followed his finger to a distant cloud.

"Oh... that one over over the blue yonder? Its just a two jellyfish playing a game of checkers. The one on the right is winning by the way" said Nyota dryly.

With her attention diverted he quickly took a pain pill to help with his head, "your right, that one is winning." He could ignore the headache and the Shadow, at least for now.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and pointed to another cloud, "that one looks like a wrecked car." YOU MIGHT HAVE MY POWERS BOY, BUT I HAVE YOUR MIND AND YOU ARE GOING TO SUFFER. He ignored him this time, not out of fear of the pain but because he didn't want to have to deal with it right now.

He gave Nyota a smile, he intended to push through whatever the Shadow threw at him, and then pointed to another cloud, "that one looks like an octopus smoking a cigar."

"I dunno... looks like he is smoking a blunt to me."

Nyota smirked at the thought of an octopus getting high. The mere thought of it was enough to warranted a chuckle out of Nyota as she scanned the skies for more funny looking clouds.

"If you look a bit to the left to octopus, you can see a walrus in a top hat if you squint your eyes enough."

Nyota felt something crawl on her hand. When she lifted her hand to her face she could see a single black ant scurrying up her index finger. As it began to move under her finger, she used to her thumb the crush the insect. Nyota let out an annoyed huff as she wipes the ant guts off of her hand, smearing it onto the grass she was laying next to.

He smiled brightly despite the splitting headache he had, the Shadow was still ranting but he wasn't going to let it ruin his day

"I wonder what a high octopus would be like," he had grown up on the streets, he knew a lot about the affect of drugs, but the thought of an octopus getting high seemed funny to him.

He squinted and saw the walrus, he chuckled at it, and then pointed to another, "that one looks like a giant fly."

He turned to Nyota, it was so odd doing normal things like this after spending his life as a thief for Garret. Ironically it took a supernatural entity latching onto him for him to get a normal life, "what was it like?....life with your parents."

There was a pause from Nyota before she sad up and twisted her head to face her friend. She raised an eyebrow before she set her gaze out to the great expanse of sky in front of them.

"My parents huh? They are alright. They are big time dorks though... almost our entire life revolved around Star Trek. Like, you couldn't swing a dead cat in my house without hitting something with a Star Fleet insignia brazened onto it. But... they are always supportive me... even if I turned out as colossal fuck up. They are a bit overbearing at times and were always dotted over me but... I think they are the only two people in the whole wide world who genuinely care about me. Hell... I drove them to near bankruptcy during my hospital stay. Even when the best medical minds told them I would be lucky to see my next birthday they continued to spend what little they had to keep me clinging to this world. They didn't care... if it meant they could kept me alive just a bit longer then it was all worth it to them."

With that Nyota sighed and laid herself on the cool grass behind her.

"I think most people would find them a little... weird but... for all their quirks they are good people. I am so super lucky to have them as my moms. Anyone who says otherwise... I say fuck them."

If James had looked at her then, he would have seen her smiling from ear to ear as her starry eyes looked out to the sun.

"What about your folks? I grew up with an interracial pair of lesbians Trekkies from rural Nebraska. I would love hear what a normal-ish family is like."

He smiled as she described her parents, it was so odd hearing about things like family when you've never had one, it spounded truly amazing.

His smile grew as she laid back and smiled brightly, "you have a nice smile, goes good with your eyes," he wasn't really sure where that came from, but he meant it he really liked her smile.

He laid back on the grass too, enjoying the cool feeling, he turned to Nyota smiling. But, smile faded as she asked about his family, he sat up, not sure what to say. It wasn't a pretty story, "well I..I'm......," he trailed off.

He looked back to her, "I..I never knew my parents.....I was found in an alley when I was baby."

Nyota dozed off a bit and didn't quite catch Jame's compliment. Something about her eyes? Kinda random but she just agreed with whatever he said as to not interrupt the flow of the conversation.

"Ermm? Err... yeah. Sure."

Nyota was attentive enough to listen to James family life... or more accurately his lack of one. It didn't occur to her until after James spoke that not everyone was fortunate \as herself in having a family in the first place. Or at least one that was willing to take care you.

"Shit... thats really fucked up. Sorry I brought that up. Still... your here now so... someone raised you right? Would you say they were a like a parent to you?"

Perhaps it was a bit insensitive to pry more into the subject but Nyota was curious about who it was that raised James... if anyone.
