It was then that Zoraida remembered the piece of paper her grandfather's secretary had placed on her desk the day before and that she had pocketed on her way out that morning.

"Oh, before I forget," Zora said as she reached behind her and pulled a folded up piece of paper out of the back pocket of the designer jeans she was wearing. She then stepped forward and held it out to Frederick.

"The names of some companies on the island that are looking for, or could use a business consultant," she explained, "That is if you are still thinking about going that route," she added, not sure if Frederick still had plans or not to move in that direction.

Frederick paused his unpacking, reaching out to take the offered note. He skimmed over it, but didn't look at it too closely. He wasn't going to go through and scrutinize it until later, and it wasn't as if the rush was so great he needed to stop their conversation over it.

But his face lit up anyway.

"Thank you very much," he said. "This should help a good bit with the job search. There are so many companies, and so little information. I think they expect people to already be in the industry, or to know someone who is, and to use that as a leg up."

It was, after all, always about who you knew, not what you knew.

"You are quite welcome," she replied politely, having noticed the slight change in his demeanor, and feeling glad she could make his life a bit brighter. She knew how hard it was for many of the Halcyonites, and now that Broen was gone, she had begun realising that she just couldn't hold on to any of the anger and resentment towards Frederick. It was overwhelmingly tiring. And she was just so weary of disliking people.

"And I am glad I could help out," she told him earnestly. "I do know how difficult it is to break into a new market. And it is, unfortunately, a case of who you know here. The island is so small, that every business kind of knows who's who."

"It's a case of who you know everywhere," Frederick said with a sigh. "A fact of life. Humans are - sorry, I guess people might be a better term here?" He looked to her for confirmation, clearly unused to dealing with so many non-humans. "Either way, people are social creatures. Without making ourselves, we can't possibly judge candidates for a position without taking our biases into account. If you look for them, you can try and compensate for them, but even that doesn't clearly work out. Attractive people tend to do better, for example. People who look like they'd fit the idea the person doing the hiring has for the job. It ties into dress for success and all that."

It was probably all stuff she knew, but he considered it fun to talk about as he set the paper aside, going back to unpacking the box. Most of his cupboards were empty, so there was plenty of room.

Zora met Frederick's questioning gaze calmly and nodded in agreement, she understood exactly where he was coming from. Until she had moved to the island, Zoraida would never have believed that there could be such (an easy) co-existence between non-humans, humans and everything in between.

"That is very true, and often choosing men over women. I have had to deal with a lot of men thinking that I "shouldn't worry my pretty little head" over the details," she confessed with a shake of her head. "Sometimes I think there are few women at the helm of companies just because they don't want to deal with the misogyny that still has a foothold in a lot of businesses."

Frederick looked up, looking genuinely surprised.

"Really? Truthfully, I'd expected the island to be more... enlightened. Back home was a boys club the same way everywhere else was, but back home didn't have vampires sitting on the council. Almost half the CEOs I've seen are women here from what I've seen."

He hadn't really thought much about it, truth be told. Honestly, sometimes he went out of his way to try not to think about CEOs.

Here Zora had to smile a little, Frederick was right of course. Manta Carlos was progressive. She just often forgot that many didn't realise her company extended beyond MCI.

"Sorry, I should have realised," she started, "that you wouldn't know. But my company extends beyond the island. MCI is not a problem, it's part of the reason I decided to put my headquarters here actually. It's out there that I've had to fight against deep-rooted prejudices. It's most likely because I am young, female, and actually from a wealthy family. You have no idea how many times, I've overheard the "playing at, til she finds a husband" comment."

"It's stupid," Freddie said with a sigh, loading pots and pans into his cupboards. He didn't know enough to know how good or bad the ones he had now were, but they seemed fine. At least they weren't bargain bin.

"You have the odds stacked against you, I'm afraid. Anyone in their twenties does, but for a woman? Especially one from a wealthy family? I can imagine the jokes and snide comments. I don't think it helps that CEOs tend to overwhelmingly be older men. For them, it's still an old boys club. Half of them were probably around for..."

He paused for a moment, and then glanced back at her.

"Was the second great war something they could reasonably be from?" He was having a hard time remembering his dates. Was that the 40s or the 60s?

Zora chuckled at the great war comment. She could definitely agree with that. "The second great war was in the 40s," she supplied. Not expecting him to know all of Earth's history, it was just too extensive.

"But that is it exactly. The old boys club. And I mean boys cause honestly, it's just immature behaviour. most times. For example, I have attended meetings, made deals - or so I think - and have found out later another deal was made over drinks at a certain club..." she said with a sigh.

"Now, I have learned, "get it signed" before I leave the board room, and if possible notarized immediately after. Don't allow for backsies, or handshake deals.Cause just because I don't take you out to dinner, drinks and a strip club doesn't mean my company can't meet your needs," she said as she watched Frederick pull a grater of some sort out of the box, and wondered what it did.

Frederick scrutinized the grater much the way Zora was, before finally deciding that he was going to just have to look it up later. Rather than putting it away, he placed it on the counter, going back to the box.

"I have to confess I made plenty of those deals myself," he said. "Although, in my defense, a lot of those deals were while I was literally wearing a mask. Can't exactly have an above the board meeting with someone whose identity you don't know. To a certain extent, you have to be willing to play ball to get anywhere in places like that. It's unfortunate, but at least in Halcyon it felt like a fact of life. Too many old men who want to sign deals at strip clubs, as if that's an appropriate place for a professional business deal."

The box's contents were starting to wane, and he mostly ignored the clothes, pushing them to the side to deal with later.
