Hal tried to smile. He wasn't really sure if Chloe was unsure of her own reply, she was keeping something else. It didn't completely calm his mind, but at least what she told him was somewhat reassuring. He didn't have anything against demons. As far as he knows, demons haven't harmed him or anyone around him in anyway. At least that's how he remembers.

Brushing off his doubts, he turned to Chloe as she asked him another question. "Don't worry, you're not triggering any trauma. I'm not going into any sort of panic attack on you." he told her calmly. If it was horseback-riding then that might trigger something similar, though it hasn't really crossed his mind yet.

"As far as I know, I'm miles away from any demon encounters. I guess I just have horror stories around me or something." he said, shifting his weight to his other leg. "I mean, considering my ability is what it is, I guess you can say I sorta developed some sort of paranoia towards demons." he added. Hal had always been a little wavy of demons and malevolent spirits. Sometimes he wonders if malevolent spirits could be the cause of his dizzy spells. He could never really tell.

Hal stared at the girl in front of him for a moment, adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose. "You sound really curious about this, you know that?"

Since they had been planning on finding a place to sit, Chloe decided to start walking again. She gestured for him to follow along.

“I am curious,” Chloe said. “I don’t know anything about demons, except for what I heard from fiction and crazy people. Until I ended up here, if you told me they were real I wouldn’t have believed you. But now I’m living somewhere people can un-ironically accuse me of being one.” Her tail twitched. She shrugged. “It’d be nice if I could learn a few things about real demons. It’d let me explain the differences to people, between me and a real one.”

It bothered Chloe that people mistook her for a demon all the time, but it also bothered her that it bothered her. For all she knew, there could be demons out there who were really nice. What’d they do to deserve such a bad rep?

“So! You said you’ve seen people who were possessed by demons?” The kid had to know something. “What do you know about that kinda thing?”

"Well..." Hal thought for a bit while he followed after the girl. What would he tell her, he wondered. He could just see that eager look on her face. Hal wasn't always good with words and he was trying to figure out a short way to tell about the people he had met before with actuall demon encounters.

"I wouldn't say they were all that bad..." Hal let out a thoughtful hum, "The ones I saw looked mostly like they were really wasted. I'd say at least 5 shots of tequila? I dunno." Now that he thought about it, was what he said even right? Was tequila hard liquor? He couldn't remember. He never really tried knowing anything about liquor.

After a moment to ponder, he looked back up at Chloe. "I think it depends though but those were the ones I saw for myself. The stories I've heard sound way off." he added. He heard about demons manipulating other people to the point of mortally wounding them, if not completely killing them. It scared him how vulnerable he could be if he ever meets the "bad kind", as they say.

"Anyway, I wouldn't really be surprised if there was a demon in school or in the island. Maybe... you might run into one...?" For some reason, part of Hal wasn't happy with the idea of a demon in the island.

Making people 5-shots-of-tequila-wasted sounded kind of inconsiderate. Not as mean as the things she would have associated with demons, but definitely not nice.

“I probably will. I still haven’t been here for very long.” Chloe admitted. “Even if they’re dicks, it’d at least help me to explain myself.” Hal still sounded really unhappy about being near demons, even if he didn’t know much about them.

“…How do you know those guys were actually possessed by demons, and not just… normal-wasted? Or crazy? Or… some other weird stuff?” Chloe desperately wanted some knowledge she could sink her teeth into. Something completely legitimate. And this kid probably didn’t have that. “Er… sorry, I’m bothering you, aren’t I? Maybe I should just… look it up in the library or something.”

"I recognize the smell of liquor from a mile away." Hal muttered, almost to himself. He doesn't have much memories of his parents. One thing he remembers though is that his father drank a lot. His dad was a middle ground for workaholic and alcoholic. At least that's how he remembers. It has been years since he last heard of them, after all.

"Crazy.... That I can't say much." Hal looked up with a little frown. He was sure Chloe doesn't completely believe him. She might just be giving him the benefit of the doubt for all he knows. And yet she still apologized.

Hal let out a soft sigh. "No, you're not bothering me. I just really don't know much about demons to actually help you though." He admitted, his shoulders slumping. There wasn't any other way to say it. He was just as clueless about what demons actually are.

And now she was making Hal feel bad. At least, that’s what Chloe was reading from his voice. He didn’t have the answers that she wanted, but she didn’t want the kid to feel stupid.

“Hey, you still probably know more about souls than… pretty much everyone else, really. Actually know. I mean, you’ve seen them!” The demon-girl held out her hand, hesitating for a moment before patting the boy’s shoulder.

“Say…” There was probably something she could ask him to make him feel smart. Something he’d probably be able to answer. “Do you know if dogs have souls? Or… other animals that aren’t human?” Immediately after saying this, Chloe realized that goblins weren’t human. “Er, that aren’t people, I mean. Not all people are humans," she corrected herself.

Hal chuckled softly as Chloe patted his shoulder. She was actually comforting him. It wasn't a new thing. He thinks people have found him pitiable. But she sounds more encouraging than the last time he remembers.

He looked up at her as she began to talk again, asking about if non-humans had souls. The question made him pause to think. Do animals have souls? He never actually went through the trouble to check. While his glasses focused his eyesight, it got in the way of his other vision. And he almost never took off his glasses.

"Actually, I never had time to check." He mused aloud. He never had time to think about that around animals. And as far as he could remember, he hasn't really encountered much non-human creatures in his two years. Or at least, he hasn't noticed.

"They probably do though..." His voice trailed off. Do they? Or do they not? It was one thing he should probably look into sometime.

"I was wondering though," he said, turning to face Chloe again, "You haven't actually told me your ability, have you?" One way to change the topic.

…He never checked? Had he never seen a dog before? Chloe almost wanted to drag the kid to the nearest place with a dog and make him look at it. And then a cat, and then some bugs, and then some birds and fishes and – hell, why not just find a way to take him to a zoo? There was so much magic in this world, and she wanted to know everything she could about it.

But he wanted to know about her power, too.

Chloe looked away for a few moments, formulating her response. “I, uh… does everyone have to have some kind of superpower to go here? I mean, I’m a weird-looking human with super strength from another dimension," she shrugged. "I'd think that would be enough."

Chloe had long worried that her real power – the one she wasn’t talking about – somehow hurt people. Specifically, she was worried that it might hurt people’s souls. Maybe this was just a stupid hunch, but if it was the truth, nobody could know. That was the kind of thing that could get a person labeled as some kind of monster, less than a person.

Even if it didn't hurt people, it sure made her sound like a succubus. It was a succubusy kind of thing, draining people's strength and making them feel good, not to mention all that touching. She didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea, or starting nasty rumors about her sex life.

"I think I'll go hit the library now. Later, Hal." She scurried away, far from eager to talk about her own abilities.

Hal noticed the long pause before Chloe had replied to his question. Her reply was really dodgy, it made her really suspicious. While he had been talking the few minutes earlier about his ability, he's managed to get over the thought that Chloe should be someone he should fear.

Right now, he was growing more curious about her true nature. She gave him a good answer, but why did she have to seem like she was on edge all of a sudden?

What was she hiding? Hal wanted to know.

Just as she was about to turn back, even Hal didn't expect himself to actually reach out for Chloe's arm before she got away. He was curious but it never really occured to him it was that bad. "I told you about mine, why are you so secretive about?" He said calmly. His voice was low and quiet. He wanted answers.

Chloe didn’t feel like giving out answers today.

“Well, fine. I was gonna keep it a secret, but since you pushed me, I’m actually Batman wearing a clever disguise. This is all part of an elaborate plan that will save Manta Carlos Island from the Joker.” Her delivery was completely deadpan. She removed the boy’s hand from her arm.

“For real, though, just look at me,” she said. “I have the ability to look like an abomination of nature.” She hid her sass behind a matter-of-fact tone. “I also have the ability to make people from my home world decide that I am an abomination of nature, and that all those like me must be exterminated. With time and practice, I’ve gained the ability to be a little touchy about that.”

All of this was true. She raised an eyebrow at him. “Is my interrogation over yet?”
