Hal gave the girl in front of him a look that seemed to say 'I don't have the time you hear your BS either'. He could care less who Aurora was, he was still a bit upset. He didn't even notice the lighting almost shorted out (again). And with the next question Chloe threw at him, he wasn't sure if he should take it as sarcasm or just an honest query.

After a moment's thought, he hesitantly decided with the latter. "Why? Are demons actually soulless, after all?" Hal said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He tilted his glasses down when he glanced at her with a look that expected that there will be a demonic glow around her. As soon as he said that, he raised a brow at what he saw. From having 'suffered' with having his ability, he started to recognize significant differences between souls based on certain characteristics and Chloe was... actually human. Although he couldn't see it completely, he couldn't find any sort of abnormalities that would say otherwise.

"It's... intact." was the only thing Hal could say after a pause. Now he was wondering what she'd been thinking considering Hal has been accusing her of being a demon.

Were demons soulless? Chloe gave Hal an exaggerated shrug. “I don’t know anything about souls.” She had heard things about souls, but not from anyone she could consider a trustworthy expert on the subject, just a bunch of religious sorts who liked pretending to know things.

“Intact,” Chloe repeated. “So… I have one. And it’s a whole one…” She nodded. “You know, a lot of people used to tell me that I didn’t have one at all.” The horned girl stared past Hal for a few moments. She was quick to snap herself out of it – she didn’t like dwelling on those memories, especially not when she was trying to talk to someone.

“What would that even mean? Not having a soul, I mean. Since you’re apparently an expert on souls.”

"To be honest, I haven't met at real demon." Hal said, almost muttering to himself. He was mentally scolding himself for accusing Chloe to be a demon. Having to hear that it didn't seem to faze her was a relief, but not enough to forgive himself for the error.

"But I have seen a few people without their souls, or parts of it missing." he continued. It was a chilling thought but he was sure he wasn't mistaken. "I'm not really an expert as you call it so I do't really know what that means. I sort of just assumed that was the 'selling your soul' thing." A beat. "Then again, shouldn't have been after death?" he added thoughtfully. "But Liches don't work that way..."

Hal realized he had spaced out to his own thoughts and turned back to Chloe, a light pink brushing his cheeks. "I still don't get that you don't have any demonic influence on you. Does everyone in your world look like that?" He said, giving the girl a once-over. He gave her another thoughtful pause. "You know... just... pieces to the puzzle...." he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

The hallways were empty now, aside from the two of them and the occasional straggler. Everyone else was in class, or otherwise occupied elsewhere. Chloe was listening closely: she was trying to figure out this soul stuff now, too.

“Nah, everyone else in my world looks normal like you. Except for a couple freaks like me. We had a rare supernatural condition that would change us in unpredictable ways. I just… ended up with a demon-body, I guess.” She shrugged. A second later, something occurred to her: “Hey, wait a minute. If you’ve never seen a real demon before, how would you be able to tell if there’s any, uh, ‘demonic influence’ on me?”

If they were going to figure this stuff out, they’d have to make sure they weren’t standing on any silly assumptions.

"I said 'real'. I was being specific." Hal immediately answered with a huff. "I've met people with demons possessing them once or having those dumb contracts with demons. I haven't met the demons myself but they had these.." he paused to make an exaggerated shudder. "aura." He should be used to it but seeing colors that were different from normal auras gave him chills.

"It's the glow around people. It's normally a solid color, sometimes mixed but sometimes there are combinations that shouldn't be. That's the influence I'm talking about." Hal explained plainly.

Hal took a moment to look around before turning to Chloe. "Do you just want to sit else where? I feel like the hallway is suddenly a ghost town..." he said, barely looking at her. He wouldn't admit it but the demon conversation was starting to make him feel cold.

Chloe looked around. There wasn’t anyone else in the hallway. Chloe was only taking a few placement tests today, so she didn’t have anywhere important to be. But… “Oh… crap. Don’t you have class, Hal?”

It didn’t take long to get that straightened out. She didn’t know any good places to sit down in this part of the school, so she would let him lead the way.

“I thought of something,” Chloe would say when they had started walking. “Maybe… maybe the… aura weirdness is just a symptom of what demons do, but it doesn’t have anything to do with what actual demon auras are like. Maybe demon auras are perfectly normal.” Chloe looked to Hal. “Would that even make sense?”

"Nah, I got the whole day off." Hal said as he turned to walk. He mostly just wanted to walk around to not scare himself. As they began to walk, Chloe started to talk again about demon souls. Hal wouldn't have looked into it but the last thing she said had him stop abruptly in his tracks.

He stayed still for a moment, his thoughts racing, trying to recall any moment he had encountered demons or anything of the sort. He had never really met a demon so there was no way to confirm what its soul looked like. If he was to be completely honest, everything he knew were from deductions he had made on his own. But there were still missing pieces to the puzzle.

There was no way to confirm if Chloe was human after all.

He turned to Chloe with a forced smile, "What? So are you saying that you actually are a demon? D-don't joke around." he said. His words faltered. He probably looked pretty pale to her right now.

Chloe stopped and turned towards him. She began to smirk again.

“That seems kinda racist,” she remarked, pretending to take offense. “Or speciesist, or something, acting like all demons are evil just because they’re demons.” She looked Hal dead in the eyes for a few seconds, still smirking, as that remark sunk in. Her tail twitched.

Then she started laughing. “Nah, I still don’t think I’m a demon, Hal.” She shook her head. “I was telling the truth the whole time we were talking. My parents were human.” Another thing occurred to her; her gaze turned away from him and she got lost in her thoughts. “At least… that’s what I remember them being. Who knows if any of my memories are real? Or… if my real dad was a demon, and not the guy who raised me?” She shrugged, then looked back at Hal. Her amusement was gone, replaced by uneasiness.

Memories could be fabricated. Birth certificates could be wrong. Her life, or what she remembered of it anyway, could be a lie, and she would never know.

The feeling of fear uneasiness slowly built up in Hal. Evil or not, he doesn't like the idea of demons being around him. Especially in his state of being. At least that's how this thought process makes it seem. Then again, everything seemed pretty dangerous to Hal, even a teacup poodle can scare him off. Of course it would make sense how scared he is of demons.

When Chloe began laughing, Hal was overcome with confusion. She wasn't demon and she was only messing with him. He couldn't believe he almost freaked out. Again. He can only wonder what kind of impression he has on the girl. If he know, he'd probably drown in humiliation.

'At least that's what I remember then being.' Chloe continued to speak, making Hal looked up to her with calculating eyes. She continued to talk about how she remembers her family and her doubts about her recollection. She looked at him with uneasiness that made Hal turn away.

Hal never thought of doubting his own memories but having someone bring it up makes him think about his own. Maybe there was a reason he hasn't heard from his parents for two years? Or that he had always felt neglected by the people around him.

Hal violently shook the thought away. That couldn't be right. Of course not. "Well, I'm not one to shoot down your theories but if you really believe that you're human, then I can't call you a liar even if you were a demon, right?" he said. He tried his best to sound sure, but to his own ears, he could hear himself falter. He can't accuse her of lying to him, but it scared him to know there was a possibility that she was.

It took Chloe a few seconds to make sense of that question. “Er… yeah. I mean, I may or may not be a demon, but I know I’m not lying to you.”

Hal seemed really worried that she might be a demon. She didn’t even know if she was a demon. What could she say to put him at ease? “I also know that I don’t mean you, or anyone else here, any kind of harm. So… don’t worry.” Chloe tried to smile reassuringly at him.

“That said… what did those other demons do to make you so scared of ‘em? I hope I haven’t been triggering some kind of PTSD thing with you this whole time.” She was ready to go into full-on apology mode, if her fears were confirmed.

…But even if it was a near-PTSD kind of thing, she really wanted to know more about what demons were supposed to be like.
