The Inciting Demon was surprised when the woman ran towards it, but it wasn't deterred. The plan was still the same.
After they both dodged another one of Clayton's swings, the woman shot. The bullet hit the Inciting Demon in its "chest." It stumbled away, and after a few seconds of deliberation, went to hide behind a tree. Although it possessed regeneration, it was nowhere near as good as Clayton's. Its regeneration was slowing considerably. If it took anymore significant damage from the woman, the threat of death was much more imminent.
Clayton hadn't seen the Inciting Demon go behind the tree, so he had his sights set on the woman again.

Oh fuck.

Well she hit the damn thing, but the demon was getting wise and she was running out of options. She couldn't keep shooting forever, and nothing seemed to be slowing Clayton down either. Speaking of which...

Laurie couldn't really break her momentum at this point - she was going too fast to stop on a dime. So she didn't. At the last second, as Clayton telegraphed his sword swing, she ducked hard and slid underneath him and between his legs. Thank God Almighty for being as petite as she was.

As she came up behind him, Laurie shot twice at the back of his knees and started running again. Hopefully he would take just long enough to recover from that that she could get some decent distance between them. She needed to get out of the forest - find people to help. Even if those people weren't people.

Clayton fell and used his hands to break his fall. He tried to stand, but of course, he couldn't.
The Inciting Demon knew that Clayton was approaching his limit based on the amount of damage he had taken and the amount of time since he had transformed. The woman was running away now, so the Inciting Demon ran to get in front of her, hoping that it could slightly direct her movements and keep her from getting too far away from Clayton. The demon made sure to stay behind trees this time to keep her from shooting it.
Clayton was healed shortly after. He looked around, saw the woman, and began chasing once again.

Laurie didn't stop running. She knew that she had the man one her tail at the very least and wasn't about to stop and give him any ground to catch up to her. She practically fell into a trance, her breathing evening out through generations of training coursing through her veins. Muscle memory developed over several lifetimes. Leap, dodge, roll, pivot. But never stop running. Ignore the fire in your muscles and your lungs and the pounding fear between your ears.

Just run until you see something that can save you.

That something was a cave in the distance. Too small for him to swing the sword in. So at the very least she would be safe from that aspect. And maybe, hopefully, it would be too small further back for him to even follow her effectively.

Now she just had to get to it.

The Inciting Demon could tell where the woman was heading: There was a cave in the distance that Clayton most likely wouldn't be able to maneuver in. The demon pushed ahead to get to the cave before her.
Once it was there, it turned around to see what was happening. Clayton was slowly, but surely, gaining some ground. However, just when he was in reach to get a good sword strike in, he stopped on a dime, his eyes widened. The woman had run long enough for Clayton to reach his time limit. The directive in his brain changed from "Attack" to "Escape." He turned and began running in the opposite direction.
Without a means of attacking the woman anymore, the Inciting Demon vanished abruptly as he appeared.
