Chloe stood outside of the cafeteria, leaning back against a wall. The light of her phone's screen lit her face, battling the daylight and its glare so Chloe could read. Around her neck was a silken collar. She was really just passing the time, not quite hungry yet, taking the opportunity to send out a few messages, catch up on the news.

"Hey Chloe!" Someone greeted her, making her look up at the oncoming horde of students.

"Hey Corson," Chloe waved. Corson's name always bothered her - one of the more important Goetia shared that name with him. The greeting was all they said to each other. Corson moved on past her to the cafeteria, and Chloe watched a few more of the other students coming by.

How easy food was to come by in this world. It baffled Gask to no end, the luxuries that these people took for granted. His first day in this place they called a cafeteria, he had eaten so much food it had made him feel ill afterward.
He had learned to pace himself since.

Today was another day. More classes, more being given strange looks by some students, reading in the library. And now lunch.
He was standing around, trying to decide where to sit when he heard it.

Hey Chloe!

It shouldn't have made him turn. There were surely plenty of people with that name in this world. But turn he did, and Gask found himself looking at an all too familiar face. There were differences, of course. The horns, the tail, the legs. But the face he was looking at was undoubtedly the cannibal queen's pet.

Despite himself, Gask approached. The lure of a familiar face was too strong, after feeling so isolated from things that he had known before.
He suddenly felt awkward however as he drew closer, his usual confidence drained by the knowledge that Chloe, like everyone else who had entered his world, would remember the events of their lives their as detached memories. Like watching a movie.

He was upon her before he knew it though, and had to think of something or else look strange just standing there and staring at her.
"Ah... Hello. I don't suppose you recognize me, do you? Not without the mask, I mean. Or the burns... or..."
He was rambling. He needed to ground himself. A deep breath.

"I'm Gask. From the si-" another breath. He could say it. He had resolved to not let it bother him more than necessary. "-the simulation."

She was confused at first. Chloe met a lot of people, and she had trouble remembering all of them. But she didn't remember anyone with a mask, or burns, or...

Oh.

She remembered Gask. He was a lot... less imposing, in the real world. Scattered. Shy. Or maybe it was just Chloe having that effect on him. In retrospect, she got the impression that he was attracted to her in the simulation - she would be lying if she said it wasn't mutual. But Pandora wouldn't have let her leave, in that world - and was Gask even the same person here? She couldn't help noticing he was in a high school uniform - but he still seemed older than her? That wasn't too unusual.

"Oh! Gask! Gods. How could I forget?" She vaguely remembered something about Gask being an NPC, but that couldn't be true. Here he was, standing right in front of her. She held out a hand for him to shake. "Nice to finally meet you in person! I must have missed you on the way out." She was really sitting and considering a memory wipe at the time. The VR had been too real for her; she was worried that she would always associate Pandora with the person in the VR, the slavery, the addiction. It made her uncomfortable that there were parallels with her real life in that world.

"Ah... well that's because..." She thought he was a real person, someone who had gone into the simulation with them. He shuffled his feet, awkwardly trying to figure out how he should say it.

"I wasn't someone who went into the simulation. I'm, ah... someone who came out."

It was so easy to say, but it left his mouth dry. He gave a faint, halfhearted smile and shrugged. This was more awkward than he anticipated. It was easy to talk to Chloe in the simulation. He knew her history, he had an established relationship and rapport with her. But out here, where she clearly wasn't human and he knew nothing about her, Gask had nothing to go on.

Did she hate him for all the times he tried to buy her from Pandora? Did she even care? Had it all been, he hated the word so much, a game to her?

Chloe held her eyes shut for longer than a standard blink. First, she had to accept the idea that this had happened, and that Gask was originally from the VR world.. After a moment it was done - she had heard of stranger things, after all. She had met an Alice-in-Wonderland Cheshire Cat before. This was nothing. She could accept this. She was sane. This was real life.

When she opened her eyes, she stared at Gask, deep in thought. Now the question was: How?

"So... ok. My guesses are, either you were brought in through a portal between our universes and someone used healing magic for your burns, or you were downloaded from the simulation into a robot body." She stared for another second. "Probably the first one, now that I think about it. Since you're coming to the cafeteria. So it was probably a portal or something." Robots didn't need to eat. At least, none of the robots she knew about did. "How did I do?" She smiled in a way that she hoped looked friendly or reassuring.

This felt something like a conversation they had before, but Chloe couldn't recall. It was just beyond the reach of her memory.

She was talking this quite well. "Ah... the second, actually. This body I was given was apparently made to simulate the human experience rather closely. So it has all the normal functions, I guess you could say."

Well, other than the fact that he only slept four hours a week. Among other things. Gask shook the thoughts away.
"But that is beside the point. How are you? I have only met a small handful who participated in the simulation. It is still a novel experience for me."

Chloe snapped her fingers in a gesture of mock frustration. "I was close." She was still smiling a little. "But yeah, I'm doing a lot better than the last time you saw me. To start, I'm not hopelessly addicted to hard drugs, and I'm not a slave." She laughed once, uncomfortable. Her real life relationship with Pandora didn't count as slavery in her book, at least.

"You want to get lunch with me? We probably have a lot to talk about." She had a couple of questions for him, and he probably had a lot to learn about this world.

This felt completely insane. Chloe tried not to doubt her sanity. She'd already had a breakdown like this and she didn't want to work through another one.

Gask watched Chloe the whole time, unsure of how he should react to her. It was good that she wasn't addicted to drugs and wasn't a slave in this world. But something in her laugh made Gask feel like she wasn't totally convinced.

"Lunch sounds wonderful, actually. I'm still getting used to the variety of food you have here."
Gask kind of led the way, used to such things. But as he looked around, he realized he was out of his element.

"I, uh, is there anything you'd recommend? I've tried a few things, but they were all things that were kind of familiar. Simple foods, I guess you might call them."

Right. Gask would be used to bland food. She led him into the cafeteria. "Well, there's a lot of tasty stuff you couldn't get in the wasteland here... Have you had pizza before? That's popular here. It's basically bread and cheese and tomato sauce, usually with meat or something on top. If you're feeling adventurous and you want to try spicy food, they're..." she leaned over to look around someone else's head, then, finding what she was looking for, turned back to Gask. "Yeah! they have chicken tikka masala today. Chicken and rice with a spicy sauce. I'm getting that."

Chloe would get her food and lead Gask to a table where they weren't likely to be bothered. She didn't want to risk an in-depth conversation about her relationship with Pandora in mixed company, and she had a feeling that was coming. Unless it wasn't. It probably said something that the simulation always made her think about her relationship with Pandora and how unhealthy it probably was. And that she was too scared to change it.

Gask heard the word spicy and immediately went for the pizza. He had tried a jalapeno a few days before. It had been awful. Sitting down with his food he poked it with his fork, unsure of how to proceed.

"So you are not a slave in this world. You're here at the school, which means you're a student as well?"
Gask alternated between looking at Chloe and glancing around at students to see what they were doing.

He noticed one picking up their pizza with their hands and eating it. Gask quickly followed suit. He spoke between bites, talking with his mouth half full, apparently unaware of normal etiquette.
"What level are you in? Er... grade, I mean. Are you studying anything in particular?"
