"Yep," Chloe nodded. "I'm taking university classes, though. First year in university, which is what people usually do after four years of high school. That's why I'm not in uniform. And I'm sure you've met another high school student or two who's hundreds of years old, so you're not the only one taking classes with... people a lot younger than you." She could imagine him feeling uncomfortable in class surrounded by children, learning at their level. He didn't want Gask to feel humiliated by that.

"I've mostly been studying dark magics, but I'm thinking of picking up something that would be useful off-island, too. Like learning a non-dead language or two. And maybe a second major." Chloe didn't have any specific plans for living off the island, but she wanted to have the option open to her. She had centuries ahead of her, after all.

Dark magic. Centuries old being in high school classes. The way she talked about it so casually, it reminded Gask of how it must feel to others when he so coldly and aloofly mentioned the people he had killed in his old world. Killing for survival was a fact of life there, just as all of this was a fact here.

"It's good to diversify yourself. I don't know what I will do once I finish this, ah... secondary education. Right, that's the word. But I'll think of something."
And he would. Gask really wasn't sure how suited to living a life here he was.

"I don't know what I'd be suited for. I've been told about resumes and jobs and all of that briefly, but I don't know how well 'post-apocalyptic warlord' would fit onto something like that."
He smiled, chuckling silently. He was serious to a degree though. Gask was painfully aware that pretty much none of his skills would help him here in this world.

"Leadership skills." Chloe didn't even skip a beat. "You shouldn't underestimate those. One of my good friends used to lead armies on other planets, and now she's in charge of a fashion company." 'Friend' was close enough to being accurate. Chloe didn't have a word for her relationship with Malara. "Besides, you have a lot of time to adapt to this place. And you can get a free college education. And you're resilient and resourceful. I think you'll do pretty well here."

Chloe worked on her food a little bit more. She was staring at his face. The lower half of it, to be specific. "How do you feel about not having a mask anymore?" She started to realize that she found him less attractive without the mask or the burns, and it weirded her out to feel that way.

Gask supposed Chloe was right. To a point, at least. He would adapt to this world as he had to the ever-changing nature of his own.
"Still," he added after contemplating a moment. "I will have to get used to a lot. Not having to fight to survive being the biggest thing."

Gask stopped chewing his food when Chloe brought up his mask, his hand instinctively traveling to his face. It was an odd feeling, to say the least. His mask had been a comfort, a kind of security blanket against the terrible fate that was radiation burns. But no one had ever commented on his face back in his world. It had just been a fact of life.

"It is, ah... weird. Feeling the wind on my face is refreshing, but I quickly became aware of just how much I bite my tongue when I talk. The pain is a mixed blessing, I suppose."

"And if I am being honest, I never gave much thought to my appearance behind the mask. The mask was my face, if that makes sense. The few people who readily saw what was underneath never really seemed to pay it any mind. Valgarður says that removing the worst of my scarring was to keep people from thinking I am diseased."

"Valgarður..." Chloe repeated the name, then nodded, satisfied she said it properly this time. "I'm used to just calling him Valli. He's helped me through some stuff in this world, too. I wonder if he'll mind if I just start calling him by his proper name."

For the first few moments, she felt comfortable assuming that Valli had a professional relationship with Gask. Gask seemed like he would need it, with all he had been through. But the way Gask was talking about him didn't match that. Why would Valli know so much about the decisions that went into Gask's new body? Come to think of it, why the hell would someone give Gask a real body? There was something screwy about this story.

"So, uh, who was making those decisions about... bringing you to this world? If it's ok for me to ask, I mean."
