b]Name:[/b] Arabella ”Ara” Pugnale- call her anything else and she will not hesitate to shoot you. (especially Ari. Never. Call her. Ari. Ever.)
Age: 18
Birthday: November 15
Gender: Female
Category: Student
Class: College- Interest in Forensic Anthropology

Appearance Description:

  • Brown hair- though this is only temporary, to be sure. It is known to be dyed varying hues of red, blue, and orange, depending on her mood. The left half of her head is shaved, simply because she can, while the other half is spiky, sideparted, and falls just below her shoulder.
  • 5’4”, 120 lbs
  • Brown eyes, olive skin
  • Kind of a punk-chic style- rather fond of short skirts, combat boots, and thick, winged eyeliner. Often can be seen in her signature long, black trenchcoat on colder days.
  • Tattoo of a dagger behind her left ear. It is symbolic of her family- “pugnale” in Italian means “dagger”- and is a tattoo that each member has received as a form of identification.

Personality Description:

Arabella is a free spirit, and maintains a rather careless attitude about almost everything. Her appearance may be intimidating, but go on, strike up a conversation with her, She may not agree with what you have to say- and believe me, she’ll tell you- but at least she’ll listen.

Ara’s fond of playing to people’s weaknesses. She’s a constant flirt and a constant tease- she’s not looking for romance, only for a reaction. She can be a bit of a bully, and her comments tend to come off a bit blunt and sarcastic, but don’t take it personal- it probably means she likes you.

When it comes to her work, however, she is incredibly serious. She makes sure to always be quick and precise when tackling an objective. She allows zero margin for error, and has zero tolerance for distractions. This goes for anything from large school projects to paid assassinations.

She is, at heart, completely self-centered, and knows it well. She will not engage in anything if she does not see a potential benefit in it.

Arabella’s of the philosophy that one’s fate is already predetermined; thus, the rest of life is merely a long joke, leading up to the final punch line. Considering her life before Starlight was, in fact, set in stone before her, it’s no surprise that she would feel this way. When her bitterness begins to manifest itself, she’ll take it out on the nearest bother, often in acts of vandalism or destruction.

She also drinks a lot, when she can, though she doesn’t get drunk. She’s got a high tolerance for alcoholic beverages. Those who say it’s because she’s Italian will earn a few good punches to the face.

Powers:

Major: Enhanced Marksmanship- Arabella can hit a target dead-on from very long distances. Her accuracy is impeccable, and has been ever since she was a child. However, while she may be able to hit a target, she is not automatically proficient with weapons, and thus still needs to train herself in using them. Moving targets are more difficult, but she’ll usually be accurate enough to cripple, if not kill, a fleeing victim.

Limitations: Arabella is completely and utterly human. She must keep herself fit, she gets tired, and she gets injured just as others do. Her knowledge of weaponry is not innate- she must be taught and trained in how to handle each weapon she acquires. If she does not have a weapon on or near her, she can still attempt to fight, but she has very little experience in hand-to-hand combat, and would likely be bested rather easily. Her pride is another key weakness of hers- she’d rather be beaten up and lose a fight than run away and be called a coward.

Minor: Aura Reading- Ara can sense the mood or emotions of a person through their aura. This is particularly helpful when determining whether or not someone’s lying, or when deciding how to play to someone’s immediate desires.

Limitations: Ara must be within physical visual range of the person she’s reading, and must make eye contact with them before she can see their aura. She cannot read that person’s mind- only their mood. The closer she gets to a person, the more difficult it becomes for her to decipher their moods. She can only read humans- her power does not extend to spirits, the undead, or other supernatural beings. She can read half-humans or shape-shifters, but it is much more difficult

Biography:

Arabella’s father was the last of his five brothers to hop on the boat from his home in Napoli to the United States. He arrived in New York and settled in Brooklyn where, surprisingly, his family had already become fully established. They had formed an underground smuggling network that stretched throughout the five boroughs and was becoming increasingly successful. And feared. It took no time for the charismatic Pugnale to surpass his younger brothers in status and become the head of their little crime family.

It was during his second year living in Brooklyn that he met his wife, and they gave birth to Arabella. She grew up as a normal child- or, as normal as a child can be whose father is a mob boss. Nevertheless, her skill in marksmanship did not make itself apparent until later in her childhood when, at the age of ten, she began playing darts for money, placing bets against her older cousins on how many bulls-eyes she could hit. Marvelously, she never lost a single dime.

When Ara’s father noticed this behavior, he immediately became interested, and set forth in teaching his young daughter how to properly handle a gun. It did not take long for her to master her technique with the weapon, and before she knew it, she was being taken along on dangerous jobs, where a client might have to be intimidated, or persuaded to see things their way. At first she was merely brought along to observe- then, as she entered her teenage years, she became a go-to hit girl, lurking in the shadows or on the rooftops, waiting for the opportune moment to strike down an opponent of her “family business.” She was destined to be the assassin-on-call: it was her role in the business, and she wasn’t about to argue.

Her minor power served its use as well. As she tagged along on jobs and observed more and more people, she was able to pick up on subtle changes in a target’s mood or aura- thus allowing her to tell when that target was lying, and advise her superiors on what course of action to take to affect his emotional state.

Throughout this time Ara was required to stay under the constant supervision of her father. She was always at his right-hand, and subject to the expulsion of his innermost thoughts and intentions towards every member of their family. It was not often that these thoughts or intentions were the same as what he conveyed to the rest of the world. Quite the contrary; her father was almost always two-faced, shaking someone’s hand in public, while spitting at their feet when they turned their back. Through these conversations (which were pretty one-sided, and often in a haphazard blend of Italian and English), Ara’s perception of “family” changed drastically. Sure, everyone protected each other on jobs- but ultimately, in a life-or-death situation, each one of them would think only of themselves. And each one would stab their brother in the back to save their own skin.

Her mother, by contrast, tended to keep away from the dark side of their life. She wanted the best for her daughter, and would discourage her from playing with knives and weapons, nagging her instead to stop skipping school or go make some friends. Every night her parents would argue about her and how she should be spending her life. Her mother threatened each time to take Arabella away from her father, She hated the “family,” and would end the daily row by cursing the day she married into it- to which the man would simply grunt. Ara got increasingly fed up with these arguments as she grew older, and tended to drown the sound out by blasting pop-punk through her headphones.

However, her ignorance could not last forever. One day her father sat her down, explaining that he had a job for her. He told her that he knew of a person, and this person hated their family, and everything they stood for. He said that they had threatened to take them down, and send every last one of them to a life in prison. He asked her, then, if she were to meet this person, what she would do. She replied obediently that she would take care of them, as she would any other enemy. Her father was pleased with that response, and presented her with the name and address of her target, telling her to complete the job that night.

It was her mother. She was to kill her own mother for treason.

That night she opened the door to her parents room. She stood in the doorway, a blackened silhouette against the light from the hallway. Slowly, she raised a dagger up beside her face, aiming forward, as if tossing a dart, toward the other side of the room, where she could see the rise and fall of her sleeping parent’s chests. Her hand was trembling, but it did not matter.

She tossed the dagger. She did not miss her target.

It hit her father straight in the heart.

Ara knew very well what consequences her actions would bring upon her. She took her mother away and was in the process of getting them into a witness protection program when the letter from Starlight found her. She didn’t want to leave her mother- while she may not have been as close to her as she was with her father, she was all that she had left. But her mother thought it best that she accept, and take the opportunity to start over while still being able to use her special talent. Furthermore her mother knew that Starlight would provide her daughter with protection from the family and her former life. Reluctantly, Ara consented.

She and her mother have not been able to speak since she left. She does not know where she ended up, nor what her new identity is. While she plays it off as if she no longer cares, she secretly hopes to find her upon leaving the Academy. The two of them are both still wanted by her late father’s associates, and are to this day being hunted down, for fear that they might divulge any information.
