Rem has to think for a minute. He was fairly certain there were no other islands, but not entirely positive. Either way, judging by the water quality, there was no way anybody was polluting much.

“No, nobody in this dimension really does much polluting as far as I understand. I believe the merfolk were upset from when they were still back on the old dimension, Earth. There were polluters there who upset them, then they took out their frustrations on this island after they were moved here.”

Then as for the second question, Rem answered truthfully, hoping that his answer wouldn’t make him come off as less knowledgeable. “Me? I’ve been here... a bit longer than a month I would guess.”

Heathcliff wasn't trying to read Remiel's mind, but they did pick up on that: Remiel didn't want to sound any less knowledgeable to them.

They hesitated a bit, distracted, but it might be a little difficult to notice. Heathcliff didn't have to stop eating as they carried on this conversation - they could chew with their mouth and speak with their mind unhindered.

'Between that and being an Angel, you definitely know more than I do about all this magic stuff.'

It occurred to Heathcliff that Remiel looked about as old as they were. And he had the uniform on, so he probably wasn't secretly a thousand years old. 'What grade are you in?'

Rem’s smile returned, quite content with what Heath said and honestly relieved that Heath didn’t start questioning how he could really know enough to help him in any way.

As content as he was that Heath felt that way, Rem still made an effort to be humble about it. “I’m sure you’ll be capable of becoming well versed in all of this too one day, I assure you it only takes time.”

Then there was the question of grade, to which Rem once again answered truthfully. “I’m in grade 9. Being an angel means I’m better versed in how the world works than most, but I’m not really that much better at mathematics than anyone else my age...”

'That's cool,' Heath said. 'I am too. So we might even be in some of the same classes.'

Heathcliff had a feeling they would like that. Remiel was giving them good vibes so far. And he seemed kind of cute. That last part completely blindsided Heath - they didn't know how to feel about that at all right now.

The conversation moved on. They discussed a few more things about school - which electives seemed cool, the fact that Heath was going to take their placement tests soon, stuff like that.

Then there was a pause. 'Alright, I've gotta ask. So, since you're an angel, does that mean you work for the Christian God?' They had a couple of blasphemous jokes to make, but they didn't let them loose. It felt too risky.

It might actually be nice that Heath could share classes with him. It could certainly help with those awkward times where he needed to do stuff with a partner, and he’d even be helping Heath since it seemed like they didn’t have many friends either.

The Christian god thing caught him pretty off guard. He had a faint idea of that from his time here but he wasn’t as familiar with it as most of the people from around the area would probably have assumed.

“I’m afraid I’m from an entire other world entirely. It’s similar to this one in many ways, but religion works quite differently here from what I’ve gathered. I come from a group of angels who essentially serve all of the gods in our world, working to keep peace and order in the world. And in my world, Christianity doesn’t really exist at all. If you are praying for cleaner water you’d pray to a specific water god, or if you want a better harvest you pray to the god of sustenance. Though from what I have researched, there are certainly parallels.”

Remiel wasn't from a place with Christianity - which was probably a relief, honestly. Especially considering the things Heath had been exploring about themself. They were pretty sure God was okay with trans people, but they were also terrified of someone who could know for sure telling them they were wrong.

'Some Christians are kinda weird about LGBT stuff, so... I guess as long as you're ok with that, we can still be friends.'

Heath wondered whether their telepathic voice was tipping Remiel off at all, or what Remiel thought their gender was. They weren't all that hopeful though - Remiel probably just saw them as a guy.

As Heath thought about it more, the idea that gods and angels lived here had some pretty wild implications. They tried not to think about those too much yet. It was a lot, and they were still new.

It wasn't so much as he had a problem with LGBT stuff, it was more that he didn't know much about it. It existed in his world but the angels themselves had only recently been permitted to have relationships with others and things like gender didn't matter much at all when it came to pretty much anything they did. But, from what he understood, he figured he was fine with it.

"That won't be a problem. Though I do apologize in advance, that type of topic might be a weak point in terms of my knowledge."

There was a bit of warmth that came with the idea that they could be friends. Rem certainly didn't need friends as he was capable of roughing it out here in the crazy island on his own. Though the idea of having somebody to talk to about unrelated topics on days where he felt a little less capable was a nice one.

"Are there any other concerns you may have?"

'Not that I can think of right now.'

Heath considered it as they kept eating. They could deal with Remiel not knowing about this stuff - it might be a little frustrating, but everyone had to learn about it at some point, and Remiel probably didn't have that much to un-learn. Hell, Heath themself was still getting used to this stuff.

'Maybe you can help me with supernatural stuff and I can help you with LGBT stuff,' they told Remiel. 'And we can start with...'

Wait. Fuck. Why was this still hard to say? They'd already been out to people online for half a year. Why was it so much harder to tell someone in person?

'So... I don't think of myself as a guy. I guess you could say I'm nonbinary, which means I don't really identify myself as a guy or a girl. And I haven't actually told a lot of people about this.' they sighed. 'My paperwork actually has me down as a guy because my parents saw most of it and I don't want to tell them yet.'

When Heath told him that there were no other concerns for now, Rem nodded and got back to eating, nearly finishing by the time Heath spoke again.

The trade of knowledge sounded like a fair deal. He would’ve happily helped Heath without anything in return, but he also figured knowledge on a topic never covered by Sera could be useful. And either way, if knowing this stuff mattered to Heath then he’d need to learn it anyway.

Rem picked up on the hesitation in between what Heath wanted to say next and listened carefully as he figured they weren’t having a super easy time saying this part. Afterwards, he took a second to process it before speaking.

“So if I understand correctly, you are physically male but on the inside you do not feel like a male?” That was a bit of a hard concept to grasp just because of how little gender had ever mattered for him. But he had an idea of how much it mattered for other species and could kind of picture how this worked. “Okay. I see no issue in feeling that way, why don’t you want to tell your parents? Would you not prefer they identify you the same way you identify yourself?”

'Because they might just disown me instead. That happens to some people like me... and my parents are kinda religious, so...' Heathcliff's thoughts sped up a little as they poured into Remiel's mind. Remiel could probably feel Heath's anxiety, from their tone and their body language if not through the telepathic connection. 'I mean, religious people where I'm from are more likely to do stuff like that. So I'm a little scared to tell them about it.'

Heath picked at their food a little. This was stressing them out. Even if they were talking to a guardian angel with divine wisdom or whatever, they also didn't want to talk about it.

'Do angels have parents?' That was a potentially interesting question, and a great subject change.
