For somebody who was supposed to be a savior to everybody, Remiel sure did spend a lot of days eating alone in the cafeteria. He wasn't about to approach somebody else, because he was an angel and it really and truly shouldn't have mattered at all. But just like a lot of things, the matter did secretly bother him, even if just a little. It couldn't be helped though and he was actually more on alert this way anyway so what did it matter.

Just like usual, he'd grab his food and sit down and just as usual, he was alone. The entire table he was at was empty, aside from him and the backpack he'd set down next to himself. There wasn't a whole lot of food on his plate and none of it could be considered anything less than healthy but even if he ate slow, he wouldn't need to stay at the cafeteria very long.

Even after sleeping off the jet lag, Heathcliff still felt completely disoriented. They still didn't really know anyone, and they still weren't entirely sure if any of this was real. They felt out of place, too, except more than usual. And there were so many freaky-looking people around. And demons.

Don't get Heathcliff wrong. They could manage not to make an ass of themself. But at the same time - weren't demons supposed to be literally evil embodied? Or something like that? Tormentors of human souls? Corrupters? Some of them were literally all about sinning, and everyone was just cool with that? They'd glanced at the pamphlet, sure, but... really?

When Heathcliff got to the cafeteria, they didn't know where to sit. They weren't sure if they would feel comfortable around most of these people. A lot of them were still just... a little bit too much.

And then they noticed an angel-looking guy around their age, sitting by himself. Seemed approachable enough. And he would probably be nice, too. He was a literal angel. So, Heathcliff stood across the table from him, and spoke telepathically, in their girl voice.

'Hey. Can I sit here?'

Telepathy was actually not something Rem was foreign to, he used to know an angel who could do something along that line. What was foreign to him was the concept of somebody coming up and asking to sit with him without some ulterior motive.

He looked up at the person with what was initially surprise and then quickly faded into consideration as he thought about what he'd done the past two days. He hadn't upset anybody really, and he certainly didn't recognize them so what was the deal. His halo glowed for a moment as he took one last check to see that this person was in fact demon free and then he allowed it.

"Yes, you may." was all he said, keeping his gaze on Heathcliff and more or less expecting them to begin trying to pick a fight with him.

Angel Guy probably just thought Heath was talking in a weird way. Telepathy was pretty weird, to be fair, but Heath hated their speaking voice enough that they would be willing to put up with it.

They sat down across from the angel.

'I'm called Heathcliff,' they said. 'Or just Heath if you want. I got here yesterday. Still figuring things out.'

'So this is probably a stupid question, but are you really an angel? I-I mean I've just never met one before, but it sounds like those would exist here, so...'
Fuck, they just put their foot in their mouth, didn't they? Embarrassed, Heath took a bite of their food and waited for the angel to say something.

That response changed everything. Somebody else who wasn't used to this mess? That was perfect, he might actually be able to have a normal conversation with somebody like that.

Rem's uncertainty faded and was replaced by a warm smile. "Nice to meet you Heathcliff, my name is Remiel."

He had no problem with the question either, very few ordinary people had ever met angels so there really wasn't anything bizarre about that. "And yes, I am an angel. Those do exist here and depending on where you're from, you're probably going to find that a lot of stuff exists here."

He seemed to think about something, losing his smile for a moment of concern. "Also... if you've only been here a day, I'd imagine you're probably not having a super easy time getting used to this." He was speaking from experience, though he preferred not to tell this person he'd just met about those struggles.

Remiel had a nice smile. Heathcliff returned one of their own. 'Nice to meet you too.'

Remiel seemed to get it, too. This place was a lot to get used to.'Yeah,' Heathcliff told him. 'I'm constantly hearing about things that are totally insane. Like how dragons exist, or how cthulhu monsters are out there. And apparently the ocean just stopped existing for a while last week?'

Their mind was still being overloaded with all of the revelations this place was bringing. Was this place for real?

'Also, what the hell? This pasta sauce is so good.' Cafeteria food wasn't supposed to be this good.

“Yes, the ocean thing was... interesting.” As much as he knew about that particular incident, he chose not to dive into the subject. It sounded like Heathcliff was far from used to the supernatural and they probably didn’t need to hear about it.

He cringed a little at the mention of hell but quickly let it pass. That was just a common expression and he was going to need to live with it. He looked at the pasta on Heathcliff’s plate for a moment. He never said anything about it but he did agree that the food was pretty good here.

“It’s likely going to take you a while to get used to any of this, but you are in luck. I’m not just any angel, I’m a guardian angel. And it’s my duty to help those who I see fit.” Then he whispered “That’s you.”

“I can help show you around and answer any questions you may have if you would like? I’d hate to see somebody have to face a place like this alone.”

Oh man. Guardian angels were a thing? And Heathcliff had one now? Even if this was only a thing Remiel would be doing sometimes, any amount of divine protection sounded like a pretty good thing. So did having a friend.

'You would do that?" Heathcliff took a second, trying to come up with any pressing questions they had. But there were too many for them to easily pick one. 'I got the basic tour of the school earlier, but there's no way they coulda told me everything. So, sure. Thanks.'

Heathcliff came up with a question. 'So... do you know what happened with the ocean disappearing thing? Like should I be scared about some kind of cthulhu monster just lovecrafting the whole ocean away if I go to the beach?'

“You are very welcome.” Rem was happy to see something playing out as he had expected for a change. This was how someone was supposed to act, Heathcliff hadn’t been corrupted by this awful place yet.

“As of right now, the ocean should be safe. The disappearance of the ocean was due to a kingdom of merfolk getting upset with the residents of the land for littering. But upon realizing that those on this island live very clean lives, the merfolk returned the ocean to its natural state.” That was a very shortened form but Rem still knew that much could be overwhelming. “I apologize if that’s a lot to take in, feel free to ask for clarifications when needed.”

It sounded like this was a one time thing. Good - he could still go to the beach. Assuming they managed to make some friends here to go with.

'Sure. So they were eco-terrorists, basically... wait, does that mean there's another island in this dimension where they pollute a lot?" Heath knew that they were in a different dimension from most of earth. Or the 'narrow reality' as they called it here, which honestly sounded kind of dorky.

Heath would have another question, after that. Unrelated, but it just popped into their head. 'How long have you been here, Remiel?'
