Personality Description:

Apollo is a generally well-mannered, pleasant person around others. Despite his disability, he is still able to find the beauty in the world around him- albeit, not by LOOKING for it, but by listening. His upbringing provided him with impeccable manners and superb social skills, and he genuinely enjoys meeting new people. However, Apollo does not often go out of his own way to look for people to talk to; rather, he waits for them to come to him. He’s a bit shy, and much prefers to spend his time alone at a piano, drowning his memories in Chopin or Debussy. He also tends to be a bit sensitive, and his emotions run high, making him prone to various mood swings. He grew up relatively sheltered, so his ability to cope with certain things, such as bullies, slang, and drug use, is very weak.

Powers:

Major: Sound manipulation. Apollo has the ability to alter and intensify the volume, pitch, and tone of sound to destructive levels, allowing the sound waves to become a powerful physical force. However, due to the tragic circumstances by which he discovered this ability, Apollo is unwilling to use his power- in fact, he’s actually downright terrified of it- and thus, has not yet mastered control of it. It can be triggered by events of high stress, fear, anger, or other negative emotion.

Limitations: Apollo's sound manipulation appears to extend only to his own vocal chords; he cannot manipulate sounds from any other source but himself. Additionally, the sound waves he produces cannot pass through sound-proof walls, nor do they have an effect on many high-density materials. The sound waves are only destructive within an 100 ft radius, at their most powerful.

Minor: Acute hearing. Apollo’s gift with sound extends to his ears. His lack of sight, coupled with his inborn adeptness with sound waves, allows him to hear with intense clarity, even sounds at far distances or frequencies beyond normal range. This could potentially get a bit maddening- it’s true that when he can’t block the sound out, he’ll often lose focus or sleep due to his “gift.” However, his enhanced hearing also provides him with a strong musical advantage, as he can pick out notes and learn complex pieces by ear.

Biography:

Apollo’s parents were very kind, loving people. His mother was an heiress to a vast family fortune that had been accumulating since the late 1800s; his father was the head of a successful law firm in the city. Their marriage was a happy and easy one, in all factors but one- Try as they might, Mrs. Liron was apparently unable to conceive. Devastated, the pair was about to give up hope when, by some “miracle,” she became pregnant with Apollo. The two rejoiced, and promised they would give their child absolutely everything they could. Everything seemed perfect in the world for nine glorious months- until, due to complications during childbirth, the couple learned that their baby boy was born blind. This was heartbreaking news- however, as they held their newborn child for the first time, looking down at him while knowing he could never look back, they reaffirmed their vow to give him every once of their love.

And it was due to this solemn vow that Apollo grew up with very little to complain about. He had a loving family, a large house by the sea, and even a few good friends at school (people who had noticed him for his money, and had slowly grown fond of his optimistic personality.) His parents provided him with everything he needed to support his endeavors (however, they were reasonable about this, for fear of spoiling their child.)

His minor gifts manifested at a very early age, when, shortly after his third birthday, the little tyke managed to climb atop the piano stool and plunk out the tune to the lullaby his mother always sang him. Upon finding him playing, his mother was pleasantly shocked and surprised. She was even further surprised when, during his song, the child was able to hear the exact moment at which his father’s car began pulling up the long driveway to the house, and immediately stopped playing to run to the door and greet him. Not certain what to make of his heightened sense, the couple just blamed it on his lack of sight, and blessed it as another miracle. As his son began to show more interest at the piano, his father advised him to take up lessons.

The man chosen to teach Apollo piano was not all too impressive, by appearance. He had slightly scraggly hair and a beard to match, and appeared to have a total of five shirts in his closet. His eyes were wide and sunken into his head, and his right one twitched slightly at certain intervals. He always claimed that he would be very much involved in the music industry by now if it weren’t for a streak of bad luck he’d been having for a few years. Still, he was believed to be (mostly by himself) a modern-day Beethoven, and he and Apollo had actually taken a great liking to each other. For those reasons, he was hired despite much criticism from family friends.

As Apollo entered his adolescent years, he began to focus on his music more than anything else, but still managed to keep a close relationship with his peers at school. His acute hearing gave him a unique advantage as the “ears” of his high school. He was constantly tuned in to the conversations of students across the hall, listening for potential whispers of names and day to day gossip. However, he couldn’t help but listen for his own name, and was in constant fear of what other students might be saying about him. He didn’t want to be pitied by any of them- and thus became increasingly more self-conscious about his blindness. He was also very anxious at the prospect of forming a close, or even romantic relationship, with someone- however, this isn’t the most abnormal fear for any teenage boy, much less one with a disability. Still, his piano playing in music class was known to make several hearts skip a beat, and though he couldn’t see, his classmate’s eyes were constantly on him whenever he performed.

Meanwhile, as his musical studies continued, his teacher became increasingly agitated and edgy upon entering their fine house. Being surrounded by the wealth and talent of the boy and his family seemed to be very trying on his mental stability, as jealousy began to slowly consume him. He became much more critical of the boy, strictly monitoring his playing for technical errors, and, frustrated when they were few, would simply scold him for not reading the music, even though he physically could not do so.

On the day of his 18th birthday, Apollo’s parents surprised him with a particularly extravagant gift. In their parlor sat a glossy, beautiful black Steinway grand piano. As he sat down to play it, tears welled up in his eyes. He pressed his ear to the instrument as he played, reveling in the beautiful tone it possessed. For the next few days Apollo and the piano were inseparable, and he was the happiest he could possibly be.

While Apollo was the happiest he could possibly be, his music teacher was, quite possibly, the most furious. Why shouldn’t I be playing a piano of that quality? he would think. Why should this little brat have all of these luxuries, and I’m stuck being his lowly tutor? This was, by far, the straw that broke the camel’s back, and his teacher descended into madness.

One night, while Apollo was listening to the soft sounds of night that always put him to sleep, he heard someone enter the house through the first floor window. Slowly, he made his way to the bedroom door, as he heard the intruder’s footsteps pass by and enter his parents room. He tried to move faster, but was afraid to make too much noise, and, as he continued to listen, he heard a soft gasp, a metal object slice through the air, once, twice, and two soft thuds on the ground.

Motivated by terror, he burst out the door and felt his way to his parents room, knowing that he was too late, that when he entered he would no longer hear the sound of their breathing, that they had been murdered. As he slammed their bedroom door open, he heard a familiar chuckle, and the small, almost imperceptible sound of an eye twitching. It was his teacher. Upon seeing Apollo, he started towards him, knife in hand.

Naturally, Apollo lost it. He screamed.

But this scream was not ordinary. It flew out from his mouth like a tornado, ripping through the air around him, projecting the man out the window and causing the house to crumble around him. Everything- his teacher’s body, his parent’s corpses, and the beloved piano included- was destroyed.

A letter from Starlight arrived at the hospital in which Apollo stayed the night. Having nothing left at home, he gratefully accepted.
