The bell rang. It was lunchtime, and everyone was scattering into the hallway to go eat. It was like flipping a switch, how the mood of the room shifted so abruptly from oppressive boredom to that of caged animals let loose.
This was the case for most of the class. But one in particular, a spiderling who had long since taken to a seat near the back where she could just kind of space out, class was a boon, a reprieve. That bell meant she would spend another hour holed up in a restroom or abandoned classroom. Dalia hoped for the latter; eating lunch in the restroom was never a particularly fun experience.

So as was her routine now, Dalia strayed behind most of the rest of the class. Argenta and her group would be waiting to ambush her, but if she was fast and smart she could get around them. She had spent all morning planning out her route for the day. As such, she barely had any notes from either of her morning classes.
As Dalia made her way to the door, she kept her six eyes darting around, looking for any indication of her tormentors' presence. This might even be one of the days they left her alone, just let her own anxiety keep her jumpy.

Ravina was wet behind the ears, which she was pretty sure meant very very new. She and her mother had only just moved to Manta Carlos a week prior, so she hadn't gotten over the wide-eyed excitement of the place.

For most, it would have been because they'd never seen so much magic concentrated in one location. But that wasn't true for Ravina. She'd lived among magic all her life -- a subject of debate was whether it was Fae magic or merfolk magic. In reality, it was a healthy dosage of both. She'd been born to opposing cultures. They'd been close enough that they should have been similar. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

Ravvy hadn't had much luck in making friends. It wasn't that she was unfriendly, or even directly shy, but she had a tendency to put her foot in her mouth and on bad days, she shied away from others and their anger.

She was among the last of the students to leave the classroom. Ravina still wasn't used to crowds, and they made her nervous. On her way out the door, she nearly ran headlong into Dalia, too busy looking through her mess of a bag.

Ravina gasped, stepped back. The look on her face was one of delight. Muted excitement that she deepened her voice to mask (poorly). "My bad! My bad! I was lookin' through me bag an' you popped out of nowhere!" She paused, blinked, eyes locked on Dalia's. "What are you? I never seen nothing like you!"

Dalia was nearly out of the room when someone bumped into her. Or as she assumed, shoved her. Had Argenta or one of her friends somehow gotten behind her? Dalia's whole body tensed at the sudden contact, her tiny armored hands clenching into fists as she spun to meet her attacker.
Only, it wasn't anyone from Argenta's posse. It was the new girl. She was... pretty. Really pretty, with silver hair. Dalia shook the momentary stupefication from her head and relaxed a bit, though she still looked wary.

"It's... fine. I'm an arachne demon. Well, half. My other mom is... it's complicated."
Dalia still wasn't sure what to call herself. She was more demon than anything, for sure, but she also clearly wasn't. At least to her it was clear. Phaedra had made sure to beat that knowledge into her when they first hatched.

The new girl was talking to her though. And not being angry. She hadn't been exposed to the other kids long enough to form an opinion on Dalia. Maybe, the spiderling thought, she could make a friend here. She brushed a stray lock of hair from her face and gave a small teethless smile. She didn't want to potentially scare the girl with her fangs.
"I'm Dalia by the way. Dalia Tor. You wanna, maybe, eat lunch together? I know a couple good spots."

Ravina fiddled with the paper lunch she was carrying, smile bright but constantly flickering in uncertainty. She wasn't sure what an Arachne was and found herself mouthing the world in the hopes it would help her place it. It didn't.

"That's bangin'!" Ravina responded, voice trill. She poked her own forehead and made an upward motion to signify the path Dalia's extra eyes took. "I like the eyes! You must see well."

Ravina didn't know a lot about people on the surface, she'd spent half her life in the water, but she knew enough to know they were both being awkward. Probably for different reasons. Maybe. Or maybe it was that neither of them wanted to mess this up.

"Oh, yes! That would be proper tidy! I'd appreciate that a lot, I would." she nodded hard enough to make herself dizzy before blushing and rubbing at her warm cheeks. "I'm, uh, Ravina Evans, but mam calls me Ravvy sometimes so I guess you can, too!

"Is there other places to eat than the auditorium?" which wasn't the correct word for cafeteria, but Ravina couldn't recall what it had been and she didn't want to sound ignorant!

Dalia watched the other girl curiously, seeing the uncertainty flicker throughout her cheerful smile. Was she having second thoughts about talking with Dalia? But then she was talking again, and Dalia felt herself relax a bit more. Bangin? Proper tidy? This girl sure used weird words and phrases. But who was Dalia to judge?
"Ah, I guess. I mean. I think I see well enough. And I know my vision got all weird when I lost my upper two eyes. So, yeah, I guess I see pretty well." She caught herself before she started rambling, but just barely.

"Um, yeah. Follow me..."

Dalia peeked her head out of the classroom momentarily, as she had learned to do in the previous weeks. Argenta and her crew were nowhere around. Dalia let out a brief sigh of relief, and motioned for Ravina to follow.
She knew it probably looked really weird, sneaking through an open hallway in the middle of the day like this, but it was a necessary step.

It took a bit longer than she might have wanted, leaving them a little over half an hour to actually eat, but Dalia eventually led Ravina out to the fountain near the statue outside of their building. It wasn't a good hiding spot, but it left a lot of room to run if Argenta did find her.
She threw her hands wide, smiling awkwardly as she did, as if presenting the spot. Which Ravina would have undoubtedly seen several times already.

"I come out here sometimes when I don't want to deal with the crowds in the cafeteria. I hope it's okay..."

Ravina's mouth puckered into a slight 'o' shape as Dalia mentioned having lost her upper two eyes. It didn't occur to Ravvy that Dalia didn't mean they were stabbed out or something. She figured the spiderling must have had some form of regeneration.

To Ravina, it was even less queer, peeking around and sneaking. She was accustomed to doing so back when she'd lived in Hildaland during the summers. While her mother hadn't been one to sneak, she had peered around corners and walked with her heel to the floor to silence her steps.

Ravina grinned, giving a squeal of joy when they arrived at the fountain. The fountain was hardly Ravvy's favorite location in the school (that went to the lake), but it was a second best. She had an unsurprising affinity for water.

Ravina ran to the edge of the fountain and leaned forward to catch some of the water in the palm of her hand. "I love it 'ere! I like the lake, too, but I 'eard a giant mouth at the bottom of it, there was. Kind of creepy, but cool!"

Prone to talking more than was considered necessary, Ravina pulled her wet hand up and offered it to Dalia, as if the spiderling would enjoy the water as much as she did.

"Idda swim in the lake, I would, but the sea is prettier. Wouldn't believe the stuff you find down there -- collected lotsa coral and shells from the bottom, I have. Maybe I can give you some, butt!"

Dalia was... pleasantly surprised by how friendly the other girl was being towards her. She was still on edge for some trick, some cruelty from Argenta and her group. But she allowed herself to relax just a bit.
The spiderling skittered close to the fountain as Ravvy played with the water in her hands, smiling pleasantly.

"The water seems really nice yeah. I can't really swim. My legs don't provide any traction in the water. And I do most of my breathing through my abdomen, so..." Was it weird to talk about how her body worked? Probably. Dalia shut up and twirled a strand of hair nervously.

She wasn't sure how to feel about being called a butt. On the one hand, it was just a politer way of saying ass. But Ravvy said it so endearingly, and was offering to give Dalia gifts as well. It was a strange thing. Dalia couldn't help but blurt out her confusion, "Butt? Does that mean something?"

Ravina frowned, truly distressed for her new friend. What was life without the water? Ravvy had spent most of her life in the water, she'd been born on the beach, her first breath was cool seawater.

She moved her hair back to show off gills behind her ears. "I breathe underwater and..." she focused, drawing up a small ball of water and hovering it in the air for Dalia to see it. "Some water manipulation."

Ravina glanced at Dalia's legs. She had seen only a few spiders up close in life, but she recalled they had small hairs on their legs. "I once saw a spider that could walk on water, that would be cool, like?"

When Dalia blurted her question, Ravina was utterly confused. Did they not use that work around here? She cocked her head to the right, trying to figure out if Dalia was messing with her.

"It means friend! That is what mam and her people called 'em. Papa called 'em different things."

"W-wow that's really cool! I can't control it, but I can make fire with my webs." Dalia's eyes were wide with excitement as she watched Ravvy form the ball of water. She lit one of her hair clips on fire to show Ravvy what she meant, a small candle-like flame on her hair.

Dalia giggled at Ravvy's confusion, which kind of mimicked her own, and sighed with relief. "Nah, we usually just say friend, or buddy. Though I guess that kind of sounds the same, huh?"

Dalia felt her stomach growl and remembered her lunch. She pulled her lunchbox out. It was a sandwich today. None of her meals looked like people, since it might freak out some of her classmates. Dalia herself didn't care, or hadn't really. Now she was trying to be as non-confrontational as possible. She took a bite and smiled at Ravvy.
"So what are you exactly? I'm still kind of new, so I don't know all the different kinds of people that live here."

Ravina had to giggle at that! Fire and water come together as buds! Ravina almost reached out to touch the flame in Dalia's hair but thought better of it. She let the water she was levitating fall back into the fountain.

"Pap and mam used buddy, just a lot less! Can use that if'n you'd rather!"

Rav turned, so her back was facing the fountain and took her tin lunch box out to pull out a fish sandwich. Maybe some would consider that a form of cannibalism? Ravvy had never actually thought about it.

The white-haired girl was unconcerned about Dalia's lunch, not even considering that it was people the spiderling was eating. She took a bite of her own sandwich, talking around the mouthful.

"Weeell, mam is a Fae and pap is a Finfolk. Live in Orkley, so I guess I'm kinda a Mermaid! Or Fae. Dependin' on who you ask. Mam says they ain't Fae, though." She swallowed, took another bite, and motioned to her legs. "Sprout a tail when I 'it the water, like."
