Seeing the... odd function, or lack thereof, of Maarab's arm Felen decided it might be better to removed his hand from the table once more. Though his other hand danced over towards the hilt of a stowed dagger in response to the increased agitation he forced himself to be calm and measured.

"So many of the things you say seem to allude to matters that i'm not aware of and are probably none of my business. But from what I can tell you are having something like an identity crisis. A soldier doesn't question their duties, and you're right about that. A soldier follows orders."

Felen sighed slightly and gave Maarab a stern look. "But where I come from we are taught that following an improper order is also inexcusable. A soldier has a duty to reject an improper order and take the proper, justifiable action instead. There is no war here Maarab. The leadership of armies abroad has no true authority here other than that which we give them."

"There was no improper order. I knew when I came back here it would only be temporary. They would find a new battleground. Aside from school, I have no roots here. I certainly do not fit here. Going home is my duty. That never changed."

Even talking, Maarab had a need for action. Hearing his words out loud was helping him sort them out, but he was less than pleased with the result. His wings beat so hard against his chair Felen might be able to hear them, even if they were not visible.

"All this reading has - ha! - it has infected me. When did this is the way it is stop being a good answer? I should not be having these thoughts. Soon I will have to make a decision and it should not even be a decision. I need to stop this. "

Maarab didn't expect Felen to have an answer, not really. He just needed to get the words out of his head, spoke them rapidfire, barely pausing. If he didn't tell someone, he thought he might snap with the pressure, assuming he hadn't already. And maybe an ex-soldier would understand a little.

Felen sighed heavily. Wishing he had a drink at the moment to take the edge off. "I can't tell you whether you should follow your orders or not. I know what it's like to rely on orders to give me a sense of purpose."

"But I found someone else to give me orders. My boss now isn't as strict or regimented but my purpose now is to assist them and keep them safe. Fighting if I have to, but for a reason. You know your home. Would you be going back to fight for a cause or just because someone says to fight?"

"A cause?" Maarab was momentarily caught off guard by the idea. Then he shook his head with a grimace. "That is exactly the kind of question I should not be asking. There was never any need for - something more than orders. We are at war. There will always be fighting - what else is there?"

Maarab glanced around again, restless. He could use a fight at the moment. This talking was not calming him down at all. "This pause has been so long, I mistakenly believed my father found me more useful here. And I have... changed. Enough that I have not returned home on my own. It seemed unnecessary with him in my head, and risked more... lessons...ha!" A couple more feathers fell to the ground at the memory.

"But I have been commanded to return. And I think my father, though weapons are not irreplaceable, would not send for me only to waste time ripping the other slice of my soul out. I - this should be simple. I am thinking to o much. It is not good for me. "

Felen shook his head. "You asked what else there is besides fighting. But you've read about what other things there are. You've danced with people and talked to people, and I assume experienced many things here that weren't fighting."

He clenched his fists and glared at Maarab. Willing his face to express at least some of his determination. "Wars are fought for a reason. If the only reason is to just keep fighting then it isn't war. It's just a meat grinder. If you need to rejoin the war then I understand. If you need to fight because that's what fulfills you then I understand. But don't go back just to die for no reason."

Felen exhaled and then relaxed his features, standing up and pushing his chair in. "I apologize. You are clearly struggling with what to do and I don't know if i'm the best person to give you advice. You have to decide what's important to you."

"That is true. And I may have passed the point where I could say it was all for training. There is no war here, but there is still fighting. If I stayed..." Maarab covered his missing eye with his left hand, pressing as if his head pained him. He hissed out, "It is much easier to fight a person than an - an idea!"

Felen glaring at him made Maarab take notice. It was obvious even with his limited social skills that this mattered to the other man. "A meat grinder - ha! - a meat grinder is an accurate description of home, even more than the battlefield. Demons, we do not usually die permanently. Killing each other is just how we heal. There are worse things.. but why - the way you act - I do not understand why you would - I think you are trying to help me and I do not know why. "

Maarab stood up as well when Felen did. "Deciding for myself was always punished and I am not sure what is going to happen. I did not expect advice. I wanted..." He shrugged, at a loss for words. "It is a problem I have not figured out how to solve by stabbing it." Glancing around he added quieter, "And you let me talk."

"You wanted someone to bounce your ideas off of?" He offered, not entirely sure what Maarab had been looking for either. "I don't know if this has been helpful or not- you're right that this isn't a think that can be fixed by stabbing. The hardest things usually are like that. But you're a struggling soldier and I do understand that. Even if i'm not a demon and I don't understand half of what is going on with you."

And then he offered one more thing-his hand. The left one of course, that way neither of them had to use their more unusual arms for the handshake he was offering. "I let you talk because I think you need people to give you at least a little support. People who aren't your father or your commander or whomever. And because I don't leave people behind, when I can help it."

"Maybe. It was not planned but-" Maarab shrugged again in answer. "I do not know either. I think few people would attempt to understand. Even on this island filled with strange ideas. It at least let me put some things in words instead of stuck in my head."

Maarab hesitated only briefly before accepting the handshake, murmuring, "Respect is universal," almost to himself. "That support would be a weakness at home.. I am not home right now. It would be foolish not to adapt to my surroundings." He laughed uneasily at the admission, before taking a breath. "If circumstances allow.. I think I would like another less serious talk some time."

Felen nodded respectfully. "I do believe one of the first lessons we were taught was to adapt to changes. A soldier that is not keen in the mind and flexible with their talents is just a suit of armor waiting to be shattered."

"I would be willing to have a less serious talk sometime. Maybe after you've decided whether you want to return home to war or stay here and continue trying to adapt. Be well Maarab. And if you do choose to return home... fight like hell to remain whole."

With that Felen nodded one more time and strode off away from the cafe. Perplexed by Maarab but hopeful that the short chat helped him in some small way.
