"You cannot go on like this... " Celeste said as she touched her niece's hand, worried about the apparent changes in her niece's usually sunny disposition.

"How can I not, tante*? Zoraida asked, feeling slightly frustrated at her apparent black and white view of things, "If I don't Tomas will continue to hurt people. Hurt you, hurt Shale, hurt those around me. I can't even -... " here she shut up suddenly, not wanting to admit her magic was unreliable. Afraid somebody might overhear them and tell her brother...

"You can't, what?" Celeste asked softly, worried now for her little Zori.

"Nothing, it's nothing..." she told her aunt giving her a smile, not wanting to worry her more than she was. "I just can't stand the uncertainty. Even coming home at night, I'm afraid there will be somebody waiting in the shadows. I know, it's just paranoia, and I know I have security around me at all times," she said as her gaze unconsciously strayed to the room around her, like she was looking for someone, "But the edge is still there... the fear is still there," she admitted quietly to her aunt, slightly ashamed to admit that. Fear was a new constant in her life, and one she was not well-equipped at dealing with sometimes.

Nodding as she listened quietly, "My lovely Zori..." Celeste said very gently, "You feel unsafe because you've never had somebody just pop into your house and threaten you before, or send you threatening mail. It's natural that you feel that way." Celeste said.

"I know, you can look after yourself... but maybe, a small suggestion, an idea perhaps, would be to learn another way to defend yourself.... just so you feel safer?" Celeste suggested to her niece, "And it would also be a way to release tension, maybe even just a way to clear your mind for a bit?"

"I don't know..." Zora said unconvinced at the idea.

"Well, do think about it, my love... I'm afraid I need to run. I have to pick Shale up at 3, and it's 2:45 now." she said as she stood and pecked her niece on the cheek, caressing it gently as she added, "Take care of yourself, please. Your brother is dangerous, remember that."

Nodding, Zora just sat back down in her seat, toying with a cup of semi-cold coffee as she watched her aunt leave.

It was the name 'Shale' that queued Rory into the conversation. She knew a Shale, how common of a name was that around here? It could have been a coincidence, sure, but as a general rule, Lorelai didn't believe in those.

Rory looked down at her feed and pursed her lips. Her mother's mantra was stirring up in her head again, 'just keep your head low, it's not your problem.' And then, as it had before, that same silent question that had Rory being a hero in the first place 'if everyone minds their own business, what about the people who need help? What about them?'

Lorelai felt sick. Don't be a hero. Don't be a hero. Don't be a hero.

But they need help. Why won't someone help them? Help them! Can't you see they need help? How can you turn your back on them? Why are you such a fucking coward?

Rory wanted to remind herself that she wasn't Adrastia anymore. She wasn't a hero. She should have kept her head low like her mom said. But... But Jude hadn't been wrong. Rory and Adrastia were the same person. Mask or no mask, the idea of leaving made Rory sick. But she was scared too. She was scared, and she couldn't afford to be. Someone had to be brave. Someone had to give people hope to beat the impossible.

"She's, uh, not wrong. The best protection is the ability to defend yourself," Rory said before she had a chance to talk herself out of it. And she regretted it, but she regretted it less than she'd have regretted letting this woman walk away afraid and (semi?)alone. Metaphorically alone.

Thinking about what her aunt had just said, Zora tried to understand how and why things in her life had gotten so out of control. What had been the trigger to all of this, and how was she going to deal with it going forward. They were all questions she had no real answer to and that worried her.

Hearing a young woman's voice, Zora looked up at her in quiet surprise, realising then that she had been lost in thought. Hearing her words, it took Zora a moment to process them, nodding, she found herself agreeing to some extent. "Yes, .. my aunt is a wise woman... a bit of a busybody at times, but she means well," Zora said with a sigh.

Rory had never been very good at leaving well-enough along, especially not when someone sighed like that. She drummed her fingers a moment, feeling more than a little awkward and gave an internal groan before swapping to Zora's table.

It was one of those weird tricky places because Lorelai had never considered herself a great talker. She could give inspiring speeches in adversity, but normal talking? There were too many lulls there for her.

"Guess you attract the type," Rory muttered more to herself. "Fears good, y'know. A little bit of it. You can channel fear into something really fucking terrifying if you learn how."

Zora didn't say anything when the girl unexpectedly slid into a chair at her table. In fact, Zora was, in a strange way, thankful for the distraction from her dark thoughts.

"Channeling my fear into something terrifying?" Zoraida said a little confused, not sure she had ever thought about fear that way. It was certainly a twist on things, and maybe something to be considered. "And how would I do that?" she asked her slowly, somewhat curious now about the idea.

"People have fear so their flight or fight response can kick in. And to better protect ourselves, the body produces adrenaline. For a lot of people, fear of death is enough to make them unable to move, but if you can break through that? You can use that fear and adrenaline to help your brain move faster. Help you fight off opponents you normally wouldn't be stronger than."

Rory stopped and rubbed at her lower face. "So, you hone that. Don't let your mind go to all the what ifs, that's not productive. You think up a solution and you go for it. That's the most important thing in a fight, not hesitating. Most fights don't last more than a minute if even that. Even one second could determine who wins."

Zora found herself fascinated by the young woman's words. It all made sense, oddly enough. And as the woman talked, Zoraida realised that her fear wasn't for herself, not really, it had been for those around her if she was gone and could not stop the craziness around her. She couldn't bear the idea of anyone suffering or dying because of her.

The problem was, she didn't know really how to react in a real fight, her whole life had been boardrooms filled with intricate planning and details, considering things from all angles and possibilities. This was something new to her. "I think I get it, but how can you know what to do? What will work? And if it will work?" she asked hesitantly.

"Experience is usually best for that." Rory rubbed the back of her head, considered it. "Knowing how people work is a big help. How the body shifts subconsciously when it's going to move. But the truth is, you don't always know something will work, but moving is still better than standing there wondering."

Zora looked down at the table, silently considering her words, advice, it rang a chord somewhere in her, she knew things didn't happen overnight and require work. A business deal was second nature for her, but she knew that was from years of working at it, seeing and experiencing situations, reading people.

"And you know all this, how?" Zora asked her with growing interest. "Have you been in a serious fight or battle before?"
