Among the Stones

The figure seemed to glance over its shoulder, though one couldn't be sure considering the mask. "Digging up... bodies?" The figure turned and sat upon the stone in an almost sweeping motion, seeming to finally pay the man some mind. "Why would anyone do something so... Deplorable? Tell me, what is more sacred than a grave save for the living themselves?" The way it worded the question sounded almost like a riddle, but the figure seemed to be serious.

Good god, he really did have no idea. Or maybe he was just playing dumb? Only he seemed small - sizes were hard to gauge considering the large amount of species variety, but smaller did tend to be younger.

"Because they need parts for magic, because they'll eat them... really, take your pick. We take graveyard trespassing seriously here. Which is what you're doing - trespassing." The way he'd asked his last question was weird, and Angelo knew better than to take the bait. He simply straight up ignored it. He wasn't going to get into a riddle game with a wannabe sphinx.

"That's foul." The figure said, shaking its head. "Well my dear sir, I commend your work then, as in the many nights I've been here, I've yet to spy such a beast." It said, standing and giving a formal bow. "However, I do not understand why you waist time pursuing me. I simply play for the departed. May the earthbound not enjoy a tune now and again? ... Come to think, actually... If the graveyard is, as you've said, off limits, then who could tell you I was here?"

Angelo rolled his eyes, although it probably wasn't particularly visible in the pale light.

"Because it's not as if you had a sign saying 'don't mind me, not grave robbing, just deciding to be creepy and play in the middle of the night.'" Not that it would have counted, considering claiming something like that didn't really mean anything. You had to prove it, one way or another.

He gestured over his shoulder to the woods. "Some people live in the woods, you know. And some people work there." And one of them had called it in, although Angelo couldn't have said if they lived there or had simply been going for a walk.

"OH!" The figure called as if making a realization. "So if I had a sign, humans would leave me be... What a simple solution."

Oh good god. Angelo let out a groan, burying his face in one hand. How - okay, it wasn't stupid, but it was colossally ignorant.

"Listen, if you aren't a human and you don't get how humans work, you should be taking classes on this sort of thing. I'm not paid enough money to explain the basics of human law and order."

The figure was confused again. "So... No sign?" It asked, tilting its head.

"No sign. School - you need to go to school, and get lessons about this sort of thing, so that I don't have to explain it to you." Saying that Angelo was exasperated wasn't the half of it. It was the middle of the damn night, he'd just run around trying to catch the thing, and it didn't seem to understand him at all.

That part, at least, was something he knew. He seemed to relax slightly, becoming less stiff.

"Yeah, I'm sure. If there were any, I'd feel them. We try not to let the dead linger in places like this - it's just sad, having them be alone, shadows of what they once were. Better to send them off to whatever comes next." That was what he did - sending them off to who knew where. He didn't have any inside line on what the afterlife was like, but it was better than hanging around as a ghost, a shade of what you once were. Some people passed on naturally, but others lingered in the aftermath of their death. The more violent and sudden, the more likely they were to linger.
