She cursed lightly, mind working double. Eliana breathed in slowly and held it, lips pursed. She wondered if Elizabeth was all right? Probably; the woman was strong. Now Beth's investments, those likely hadn't faired so well. Beth would be understandable upset.
Mal would look at the fabric Eli held in her hand, his face growing hard, a bitter looking growing on it. The bile was starting to build in the back of his throat as he tried to keep from thinking about the possibilities of the fabric's origin along with the kind of people that were out amidst the disaster. Malvoes would turn his head a ways and spit out the disgust, "The worst kind of people feel like thriving in ruinous times. If everything is going to Hell in a handbasket they may as well throw in their own piece of the chaos."
A brief thought passed his mind, something that made him feel disgusted with himself, If he wasn't with Eli in Hawaii would she have been out here too? It was a ridiculous thought, she may out and commit crimes for fun but surely she wouldn't stoop so low as to murder those in such a terrible predicament to begin with.
He noticed the look on Eli's face, was it concern? Perhaps she was thinking of family, or friends, or a lover. Either way, Mal wanted to put her at ease. "Someone on your mind?" His tone was soft, in a way that he was almost avoiding startling an animal.

With her hand now free, Eli rubbed her face and gave him a tired, distracted smile. "I was thinking about one of my girlfriends. Elizabeth. She has a lot of investments that are probably fucked up now. She's going to be upset. I'll call her later tonight, or something."
The terrible part was, if Mal had asked Eliana out loud whether she'd have hurt people during the tsunami, she wouldn't have had a straight answer for him. Nothing was so black and white. Maybe she would have, depending on who she came across. She might have helped people, too, though that was less likely unless it was a child she came onto.
Mal would nod a bit, "Yeah, this is probably not the best event for investors, probably will drop the property value a bit. Get a hold of her soon, make sure she's okay and everything though, not just her finances." Mal had said in a soft tone, being supportive of Eli was his only purpose as he spoke.
In relative time, Mal was still new on Manta Carlos, this place was still strange to him at times and took him by surprise still. He had little connection, sentimental or other wise, to the city and island itself. And the few people he cared about he still barely knew at times, even Eli was a mystery to him at some times, which wasn't bad, well not all the time.
But he was a very empathetic person, he cared deeply for others, especially those he considered to be his friends, so seeing Eli worry in such a way he just wanted to help her. Even if that included tracking down her lovers and making sure they were okay, no matter the number.
"I'm sure she'll be okay though, even if her income takes a bit of hit from this." Mal would look at the city, giving another good look at it, commiting it to memory even. The waterlogged streets, collapsed buildings, rampant destruction brought by a giant wave.

Eliana considered their options and found one logical course of action. She should make sure Elizabeth was okay. With Mal. That should be interesting. "Mind if we find her?"
She figured he'd say yes, even if he didn't, Eli still planned to find her. With or without Mal, she was searching Beth out. The only place Eli could think to look was at Beth's home. What time of day had the wave struck?
Mal would chuckle awkwardly, he wasn't sure how she got the idea of taking him along, considering the idea made him feel a bit uncomfortable when reality thrusted it onto the table. "I suppose that makes sense, keeping lovers from intermingling and such, keeps hostilities down, if there were to be any that is."
Then he was formally asked, which was interesting, he was meeting her eyes head on. He took a slight moment of hesitation before answering her, so many thoughts going through his mind, how he'd feel, if he'd be over come with jealousy, what if this person didn't like him, etc. They all swirled in his head then he settled on the decision, which wasn't long in retrospect just a few seconds, "Of course I don't mind, as long as you want to take me with."
This was for Eli, and who knows, maybe this Elizabeth could be a good friend at some point. Oof, Eliana, Elizabeth, a lot of people possible to call Eli, he'd have to resort to using full names it seemed.

Executive decision time.
"No. I really don't want to take you with. That's nothing against you. It would just be awkward and not worth the trouble, you know? I don't think you really want to come with either. It'll make you upset. Let's check out your dorm and my place, instead. See what we can't salvage. That sounds like something we should be doing, instead. I'll deal with Elizabeth later."
Mal was a touch crestfallen, he was wanting to help Eliana out, he knew how much she cared for her partners or lovers, or whatever they want to be called. But in the end it was her choice, given that she said that she preferred to keep her lovers separate.
He gave Eli a solemn smile, "I understand dear, I wouldn't want to intrude anyways. You make an excellent point though, we should see what is left, especially of your penthouse."

"I'm going to check out the inside. Feel free to stay here, if you want." With that, she went in, careful and quiet, as though monsters might be lurking somewhere inside. Who knew. They might have been.
Mal would follow Eli through the waterlogged streets to her penthouse. He gazed up at the building, parts of it stripped from the force and speed of the water, the glass windows shattered and bricks missing, it was a sad state.
Mal contemplated the integrity of the building itself, wondering how much support was still standing and at what strength. Considering that the island, and city was on the sea, some of the buildings should be resistant to various natural disasters, at least to some degree. On the other hand, this is an island magic and other mischief so it is also likely that no one had ever thought they'd face such calamities.
"I think I'll join you dear." Mal followed her into the wreckage, glancing around and waiting for eldritch horrors to take them, well, other than his girlfriend. He knew that it was likely that there could be an accident or injury of sorts but he didn't want to leave Eli alone.
He looked around at what was once a swanky apartment building, taking in the interior damage.
"It's almost peaceful her, in a dystopian and despondent way. Like a beautiful graveyard or ruins of Greek architecture." Mal thought out loud.
