Kon had decided to surprise Vladimir at his office. Waiting until he was finished with his work, he knocked on his office and let himself in. On second thought, he probably should have waited for Vladimir to open the door first. Kon really needed to work on his enthusiasm... and arrogance.

"Hi Vladimir!" he said in a sing-song. "Am I interrupting you? I thought I would visit you after work, and I brought mochi! ...If you're busy, I can come back later."

Vladimir had just been finishing the day by filling out the last few patient files when Konpeito came waltzing unannounced into his office with a box of mochi. Normally, such a thing might have irritated him, but unexpectedly - especially for Vladimir - the sudden appearance of Kon, all sing-songy and happy put a small and indulgent smile on Vlad's face.

"Mochi, huh?" he said as he put the last patient file to one side. "I hope it is as delicious as the Konpeito I had the other night," he stated with a grin, referring both to the candy and to Kon himself.

Konpeitō was lucky he didn't piss off Vladimir. An argument over this would have been a shameful start to a relationship

But no time to mope around! Kon gave a chuckle and set a container of mochi in front of Vladimir. Then, he pulled a chair to sit in front of Vladimir's desk."It's with a heavy heart that I must say that no treat compares to me. Fortunately for you, one of these mochis has the same spice as I had then. That is to say, one of these has some hot sauce inside. A little surprise!"

Vladimir purposely eyed the mochi with suspicion and made a little noise that sounded rather skeptical. "These look fairly innocent, and if they are anything like you, that "surprise" you're referring to might almost too hot for me to handle," he stated as he chose a filled rice cake from the middle.

Chuckling, Kon put one arm on the desk and supported his head with his hand. "If the anticipation is too much, then I can always tell you what has what. The rest are different flavors: green tea, red bean paste, one has half a strawberry inside."

It had been so long since Konpeitō cooked for someone else like this. Almost a year, in fact. He knew it wouldn't do any good to think about stuff like that. Doing so led to his colors becoming greyer (or worse, flipping back to their original). Thankfully, only the former happened.

Taking a bite out of the mochi ball he had chosen, Vlad raised an eyebrow. They were good, really good and this surprised him. He had not had anything homemade in quite a while, or at least not something like he made which was often quickly thrown together late after a long day at work.

"You feeling okay?" he asked rather concerned. Vlad's trained physician eye immediately noticed how Kon had dulled considerably, and he couldn't help but wonder if Kon was feeling alright.

Vladimir asking about how Konpeitō felt was what was needed to get him to fix his color scheme. "Ah, whoops!" He was about to lie and say he was fine, but lying about his feelings was much harder when his body changed to show the truth. "I was thinking about some old stuff. Getting nostalgic, you could say?" Nostalgia wasn't the right word. It had too light of a meaning.

"I see," Vladimir said calmly and a bit guardedly, not too sure what to say at first. Past experience had made him somewhat wary of digging into lovers/partners or boy/girlfriend's pasts too soon.

Such conversations often lead to verbal forays about their past relationships and eventually to hinting at either how wonderful Vladimir was, or how he was distant and didn't pay enough attention to them, or that his work gets in the way, etc.

Either way, it often got uncomfortable, and Vladimir knew that it was partly his own fault because he was very aware that he did tend to keep people at arm's length just because of who he was.

Taking another mochi, Vladimir then reminded himself, as he slowly ate and savoured the lightly sweet treat, that Konpeto was different, he knew all about Vlad's darker side and he was not put off by it. Vladimir did not have to hide who he really was like he had had to in those other relationships. Things were different now.

"Old stuff like old relationship stuff or do you mean childhood stuff?" he asked, deciding to straight out ask, meet his fears straight on as it were.

Konpeitō shuffled uncomfortably at Vladimir's "I see." It sounded dismissive. In the same way someone would say when they got hit with too much information and wanted to move on from the conversation.

A new topic was needed. There were plenty of things to take Vladimir's mind off of Kon's slip-up. Had he found the spicy mochi, for example? Kon was going to bring that up when he was stopped by Vladimir continuing to speak. Asking for more information this time.

He paused for a few moments, then smiled and gave an awkward laugh. "Old relationship stuff. I, uh, haha, I'd explain, but it'd get dark. I wouldn't want to ruin the mood. Honestly, I'm not sure when's the appropriate time to bring up potentially troubling aspects of your character to someone you're dating."

"Dark, I can handle," Vladimir said, clearly relieved that it wasn't going to be - from the sounds of what Kon was saying - an ex-bashing and comparing conversation.

"Troubling aspects of one's character too," he added as he looked at Kon meaningfully for a moment and without saying anything.

"Remember who you are dating, Konpeito. I would definitely say that a few of my more intimate character aspects might be troubling to most people," Vladimir said. "So anything you want to tell me, I can most likely handle," he said in a gentler, more encouraging tone.
