"If age and experience came at birth, we would have neither youth nor mirth," Pietro said from behind his hand, repeating another proverb in their shared tongue. Removing his hand from his face, he smiled softly at Natasha and beckoned her further into the room.

"I am old, Natasha. I know you have lived longer, but I must confess that I feel much, much older. My bones don't ache but they feel like they should. I am an old man trapped in the body of what is easily an eleven year old girl. Stuck, despite all my best efforts."

Shifting his feet, he rested one of his stilettoed foot onto the ottoman near his chair. He seemed captivated momentarily by the black leather and gold plated buckles. "I am a relic. Obsolete. But what is there then for me other than to quietly take a walk at sunrise?"

"You are not a relic, nor are you obsolete," Natasha stated gently as she came to stand beside Pietro, her expression reflecting her ever-growing concern for him. She had not at all expected the very confident, downright cheeky and silver-tongued vampire of almost an hour ago to be riddled with such doubt and insecurities.

"And it's okay to be tired, Pietro. It happens to us all," she said as she looked at him. "It just means you need to stop and take a step back to reflect on the things that make you happy or that you find fulfilling." she said as she took a seat on the edge of an armrest.

"Maybe you are right. That was part of why I stepped down from my position. I felt like I could offer no more after all this time. But nothing really makes me happy anymore. Or maybe it never did..."

As he spoke, Pietro absentmindedly ran his fingertips down Natasha's spine; bringing his hand to rest at the small of her back, right where it dipped before her hips. He didn't seem consciously aware that he was doing this; it was just a habit picked up long ago.

"I don't quite believe that. There are probably a lot of things that make you happy," Natasha said, stiffening her back and sitting up straighter when she felt Pietro's hand lightly caressing her spine.

Glancing at him curiously then, not sure if he was trying to feel her up or not, Natasha continued.

"I think you just can't see them right now because you are mentally tired, and any thought of doing something exhausts you. But believe me, it will pass, give it time," she told him as she laid a hand reassuringly on his upper arm.

"I just worry, I suppose. That I am out of touch in ways that I cannot even see. What you said to me in my home all those months ago, it bothered me more than I even let on..." Pietro wasn't quite used to being this candid. But he had a feeling that Natasha wouldn't go blathering about this to anyone.

Still halfway lost in his own thoughts, his hand began running the line of her spine slowly, almost as though he were petting or caressing her. Pietro realized quickly and pulled his hand away however, looking away to hide his embarrassment. "My apologies, Miss Lockwood. Some of my servants in the past would sit on the arm of my chair like that and - never mind, it really isn't important."

Natasha pursed her lips together and crossed her legs, not saying anything for a moment.

"I do apologise for that," Natasha replied rather sheepishly while staring across the room at the organ. "I have always been somewhat outspoken, and I did realize after the fact that I probably could have been a tad more diplomatic about it," she confessed as she shot Pietro an apologetic look.

"Although you do realize, I hope, that no politician is ever truly loved by everyone. Even the most beloved leaders will always have their detractors." she pointed out, a gentle shiver running up her spine as she let Pietro continue to caress her back.

Shifting her weight a little on the armrest so she wouldn't slide off, Natasha shook her head when Pietro apologized very hastily for running his fingers down her back.

"Please don't apologize, I realised when you didn't get too familiar that it was probably just an unconscious gesture, right?" Natasha stated, not at all offended by what had just happened, but curious now to know exactly what he did with his assistants when they sat beside him like she was.

"No you are of course correct. I always knew I wouldn't be able to please everyone. But the idea that a majority of them saw me as..." Pietro wasn't sure what word was cutting enough to bring the full impact of how he felt, so he just scrunched up his nose in mild disgust.

"But yes, unconscious. Once, I kept a servant by my side at all times. It was a bit like keeping a pet, though one you regularly fed on. Times were different then, or course."

"Now I don't have servants so much as employees. Biting flesh to drink has been all but replaced with surgically implanted ports for ease of access with minimal trauma. It's all so modern and clinical, and I appreciate it for the ease of it all and the peace of mind that I can truthfully say that I am not a monster. But..."

His dark red eyes slowly traveled up Natasha's body until he fixated on her face. "I crave that which I cannot have. A hundred years ago I ached to be accepted. To be able to move freely among the people without being feared as a monster. Now... maybe I realise that despite my best efforts, I am still that monster that stalked Stalingrad all those years ago."

Natasha just nodded thoughtfully at Pietro's explanation. It was not the strangest thing she had ever heard a vampire do, and in a way, it actually made sense.

"We often want what we can't have," Natasha remarked, blushing a very soft pink under Pietro scrutinizing gaze. "It's the nature of the beast and most vampires feel it to some extent at different times of their lives."

"Also, for the record, though I may deny it later if you get under my skin or rub me the wrong way..." Natasha couldn't help but quip. "I don't think you are a monster, Pietro," she told him, his name rolling easily off her tongue.

"Anything we did before Manta Carlos doesn't count, not really. The vampire I met here is not the same vampire that stalked the streets of Stalingrad. The same goes for myself. I am not a beautifully adorned and trained pawn anymore, one who was used to entertain nobles and politicians, and was regularly ordered to be someone's paramour for a season. That is my past. It's not who I am now," she told Pietro quietly.

"What a shame I never got to see you then. Perhaps we could have suffered together," Pietro said with a small laugh. "I was a right terror back then. When I wasn't being commanded around by the vile creature that turned me in the first place."

Pietro took his glass in his free hand, taking a long sip from it and sighing contentedly. This was nice, in its own way. Far and away from the noise, though he did enjoy it to a point. "There's that phrase again," he said with a laugh. "You seem fixated, Natasha. Which is it though that you prefer? The old world, aristocratic gallantry or the new man you claim isn't a monster anymore?"

"I am sure you probably would have fit in perfectly at court," Natasha laughed, having little problem imagining Pietro in fancy courtly attire, terrorizing the other guests with his charm.

"Which phrase... the one where I say, you are a monster, or that you rub me the wrong way?" Natasha deadpanned as her eyes sparkled with mirth.

Turning her whole body back a little to look squarely at Pietro, Natasha smiled with deliberate coyness.

"Well, if I was actually interested in knowing you better, maybe even canonically... Then I'd say I prefer both," Natasha confessed. "I'd like to know the real you... not who you think you are... And I'd guess you are, like myself, the sum of our times. Old world and new world."

"We share a lot Mr. Popov. and I like that. I enjoy the fact that you know what a proper Dascha is, can quote old Russian phrases. I miss, every once in a while, being able to reminisce about things like the sound of snow crunching at my heels as I crossed a frozen lake or cuddling up under the soft furs while a storm blows outside."
