He'd quietly listen as she spoke, wanting her to finish speaking before he said anything. "I see," he'd nod, "that sounds hard." He'd grown up away from the social norms of the narrow reality but knew people there were sometimes less accepting.

"Do you talk with them often?" he'd remembered hearing somewhere that parents from the narrow reality often didn't visit. "I understand that it can be hard to talk to people about these things," it'd taken him a year to get the courage up to tell his parents.

Arno would offer her a small smile. "You seem like a really kind person, you deserve to be happy," he'd brush a bit of hair from his face. "And I'm always here if you ever want to talk."

[We actually talk pretty often,] Vivian told him. [We were already doing family video calls every week because of the pandemic. And I just kinda... wear sweaters so they can't tell I'm growing boobs in, I guess.]

Vivian shrugged.

[Eh, I'll probably be fine when I get to coming out. Or I'll live with it I guess.] She half-smiled. [Thanks though. Maybe I'll take you up on that offer.]

It was good that she was still talking to her, he hoped things between remained well. "Of course," he'd say with a smile and a nod, "the offer will always be open."

They'd finish their food, and the waiter would bring the check. "Ready to go?" he'd ask with a smile, picking up the check and giving it a glance. "We can get some dessert on the way out of you'd like," the hybrid desserts did indeed look interesting.

He'd lead her towards the front desk and entrance, "looks like the snow has passed." He'd pull his wallet out and remove his card from it. "We could try to fly again if you'd like," he'd say with a smile, "or we could go on a little walk through the snow."

[I don't know...] Vivian looked at the check for a moment. Oof. She pulled her own wallet out of her coat pocket. [I don't think I have enough cash for dessert.] It was a shame, though. They did look good.

[Flying was a lot of fun,] she answered. [But I still need to get my walk in every day, so let's do that together.]

She almost regretted saying that. If she kept bringing it up she'd probably have to explain herself.

He'd smile. "Don't worry, this is my treat," he'd say, "go ahead and pick something out." He wasn't really sure what the etiquette was for paying for dates, but he wanted to pay for this at least.

"Walk it is then," he'd nod. "You go on walks daily?" he'd ask. "I get up every morning for training, we could walk togetherness sometime," he'd suggest with a smile. "I'm usually out running by six."

He'd pay for the meal, including the desert if she got, making a mental note to begin job hunting. "Ready?" he'd ask, offering her his arm.

[Oh. You don't have to... but, that's really nice of you, I mean] She flashed a weak smile - she wasn't going to turn down free stuff. She wasn't in much of a position to, as much as it made her feel like some kind of charity case. Arno was just trying to be a good date, she told herself.

So she went and picked out some kind of weird-sounding desert she'd never tried before. It was delicious.

When asked if she was ready, she nodded and took his arm. She'd pick up that conversational thread from earlier: [Oh, I'd probably just slow you down. Plus it's cold as hell in the mornings; I usually get my exercise in the afternoon.] She only ever did really light exercise; she had to keep her heart strong, but she didn't want to put too much stress on it.

[What are you training for, anyway?] Half the time she felt like some of her classmates were preparing for some kind of war. Martial arts and things like that were fun hobbies, but...

He'd smile. "Well, perhaps I can join you on your evening walks sometime?" he'd suggest, "I found this nice Japanese style indoor garden that's open to visitors," he'd suggest. "It's always warm in there."

Arno would think about her question a moment as they left the restaurant. "Well....before the island the training was...partly just in case, lots of fighting was happening among my family, so had to be ready I guess."

The half dragon would tilt his head. "Now its just....well its cultural thing still...," he'd think a moment. "I suppose there is no real reason to continue training beyond me enjoying it."

Japanese indoor gardens. That sounded a lot nicer than walking around outside all the time, with weather this cold. Arno would feel her shiver a little bit as they made it to the end of the block. [Sure, let's check that place out sometime.]

All in all, it turned out to be a good... date? Outing? Vivian had never been on a date before, and she was honestly a little scared of calling it that.

In any case, they both agreed that they should get together again.
