A windy day, a new acquaintance

Brielle took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Okay, this wasn't too bad. At least he wasn't mean. He was nice. Weird beyond all reason...but nice none the less. Nice was good.

"I don't hate orphans," She blurted out quickly. It was almost like she was one; she had been shuffled around from relative to relative so much. "I'm not a drunk either. I haven't ever drank alcohol or anything before."

She went silent, not knowing what else to say, but feeling very awkward. Besides, she was sure Sabriel wouldn't have any trouble thinking of ways to ccarry on the conversation. He seemed to be very good at that sort of thing.

"I don't hate orphans."

That was a relief! Sabriel's mother was still alive, albeit insane and in an asylum, so he considered himself an orphan. "Good!" he said with a grin. "Because it's not good to hate people." Sabriel lifted his index finger and wriggled it back and forth in a lecturing manner, though that silly grin was still on his face to show he was kidding with her.

"I'm not a drunk either. I haven't ever drank alcohol or anything before."

Sabriel lifted his hand, clearly wanting to give her a high five. He was proud of her; a lot of people their age couldn't say what she had just said. "Woohoo, me neither! Go us for following the law!" So, maybe that was a little lame, but he thought it was cool. Without those pills he always got a bit loopy... that was apparent, though.

"So, Brielle, I'm thinking we should be bestestestestest friends," he said after a moment of silence and hardcore thinking. "And we can have sleepovers, and paint our nails, and tell our secrets and everything! What do you say?"

Brielle just nodded in agreement. Before today she had been under the impression that the people who ran the school were at least a little bit choosy about who they let in, but now, she wasn't so sure. In fact, she wouldn't be surprised if she ran into a kid who heard voices that weren't there or something.

She warily gave him a gentle high five. "...yay?" Her lip quivered a little when he said they would be bestest friends and have sleepovers and paint each other's nails. Normally that would be okay, but he was a boy and she wasn't exactly used to having a boy offer to paint her nails and have sleepovers with her. Well, whatever. Once this conversation ended, she wouldn't have to see him again...hopefully.

"Okay, that sounds like fun..." She said slowly.

"...yay?"

His lower lip stuck out slightly in a bit of a pout. "You don't sound very enthusiastic," Sabriel said sadly, lowering his hand from their high five and folding both of his hands in his lap. Oh, well. He didn't understand why she hadn't been as happy as he was, but then again, a lot of people didn't have such strong emotions like he did.

"Okay, that sounds like fun..."

Aw, and she didn't sound happy about that, either! Sabriel inched away from her to give her some space. She had said it would sound like fun, but her tone didn't match her words. "Are you sure?" he questioned, tilting his head and looking right into her eyes. He had always been very good at reading people, but he wasn't so sure he would be able to do that without his medication. "We don't have to have any sleepovers if you don't want to."

Oh no. Now she'd made him feel bad. She shook her head. "No, no, I want to!" She lied, hoping that it was convincing enough. She didn't really want to have sleepovers, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings either. And she didn't have any friends, really. It would be nice to have someone to hang out with for a change.

"I want to," She repated, not only to convince him, but to convince herself as well. "Really."

Sabriel was wary when she said that she wanted to. Maybe she just hadn't been in a great mood before or just hadn't been paying attention. When she assured him once more that she wanted to, a huge grin spread across his face and he moved close to her again, throwing his arms around her in a hug.

"Oooh we're gonna have so much fun!" he told her, laughing. He was just so excited to really have a best friend! He'd been at this school for a year already and didn't have too many friends, so this was going to be a wonderful opportunity. "What kind of movies do you like? What's your favorite color nail polish?" They were just going to have so much fun, he didn't even know where to begin!

Brielle tensed up when he threw his arms around her. She told herself that she was probably going to have to get used to that, since they were going to be friends. What have I gotten myself into?! She wondered as she haltingly patted his arm.

"I guess I like...um...chick flicks? Old movies? I don't know." She bit her lip. "And um, black is alright, I think..." She went silent, and folded her arms to ward off any more hugs.
