"I do not particularly like the company of people," Catalina admitted. "At least not in the way I assume most do. They can be interesting, those humans. What was it like being human? Do you remember? Is it any different than you feel now?"
38 thought for a moment. He didn't remember his past life at all. "Well I was human while they forced my body to evolve. It was painful....really painful. The first little 'test' they did was drill holes in my body. Next they did some shock therapy. It only got worse. I don't feel very different, I only feel different when my body morphs. Then I don't feel like it's my body. It feels like what ever my body morphed into is attached to my body forcefully. I have gotten used to it though."
"Painful. How old were you when these tests began? I have always wondered what it would be like to be a human. They're fragile little creatures with such short lives. Speaking of, are you immortal too?"
Now Catalina was really interested. This man was the closest thing to a human Catalina had ever had such a discussion with. Most humans didn't know what she was, and she never bothered to tell them. Why mention something one didn't have to?
38's frown only grew. He didn't like being questioned to go back to such horrible events. But it would be rude not to answer them. "Well.......the.............profile said I'm 23 now........I was in there for two years.........I assume it stared when I was 21. No I am not immortal. As far as I know I have the lifespan of a human. It may have been enhanced but I have no idea."
"Huh. That is unfortunate. Living forever is pretty fun. Other may tell you differently, but you see and learn so much, then humans can't learn as much as some of us can. They can gather about three hundred years of knowledge before they're full."
If Catalina realized he was uncomfortable, she didn't show it. Her tone remained casual and airy.
"Well sorry for still having human qualities. It was how we were made. We may not live forever but look what we can do in three hundred years. We can build so many things. And when one of us dies more take their place. We may not be immortal but humanity will never die. As long as the right people are still around." 38 was slightly angry. Even though he was no longer human she couldn't just go comment on a species as if they meant nothing.
Catalina only smirked at his anger. "I did not mean to offend you. I was merely stating facts as I knew them. I would agree with you that humans are intriguing creatures. So weak and yet they prevail. They do indeed have an excess of will, don't they?"
38 merely grunted "Yes we do. Will that have kept us going. It kept us going after we we're kicked out of the Garden of Eden and it keeps us going even now." He quickly realized what he said and his eyes went wide. Wait..did I say the Garden of Eden? I.......I really just spoke of it? I'm certain Eden isn't in control. So why did I mention it?
Catalina looked him up and down slowly, noting his sudden unease. "Hm. You do seem quite protective of this whole human thing, but at this point you are not wholly human. Why do you care?"
38 gave a scowl. "Because it is unjust to not care about a species. Even if they are the ones that caused you pain not all are like that. So are amazing people you are lucky to meet. That's why I care. That's why should as well.
