Daniel examined her face, he thought of her words before he said anything. "Girls....stuff" he said with a thoughtful tune in his young voice. He thought about it for some more time. "You girls are weird, and you become even more weird when your grown up." the tune in his voice was calm but serious. He always thought that grown ups was weird all of them. Not to say that most of them made him scared and unsure since he was so small and they so big and they knew everything and he knew nothing. He was just a useless kid! That was what his parents had told him so many times.

He looked up at her again when she said that she was sorry, she had not done anything had she? He did not remember that he had ever seen her before in his life. Why was she sorry? "...why are you s-s-sorry Alex? I....I mean you have not done anything....have you?" he was a little unsure again from the words, had he missed something important here? He felt as if he had missed something. What did she mean about doing something about this? He hugged the book a little harder. It was then that a thought came to him and he took a steep backwards and looked a little afraid suddenly. "Y-your not from the social service are you!?" he asked. "I-i-i will not return to a foster family again....never." that was what he summed up from what she had said...that she was sorry and that she had to do something about it.

“Yeah tell me about it.” Alex lamented, she had to admit the boy was right from everything she had learned about being girl so far. They are weird very weird and her body is always in one state of hormonal imbalance or the other it seemed, half the time none of her clothes fit cause of bloating, or she felt like her stomach was going to explode from cramps. Then of course there was the disastrously incontinent night mare that was her monthly period. She had had seven of them now, each one was worse than the last. But again that was not something she ever wanted to explain to a seven year old boy. It was defiantly in her opinion much easier to be a man.

“I’m sorry that you had to-” Before she could finish explaining herself he started stepping back away from him and ranting that he would never return to his foster family. “No, no, no.” Alex said quickly. “I’m not from social services or anything I’m not gonna send you anywhere. You don’t’ have to worry about that.” She took a slow step forward with her hands out. “I promise, not going to hurt you.”

Daniel looked at her with a suspicious look in his eyes as she talked, he examined her face and then he calm downed a little, he sighed and nodded. "Okey...I belive you" he said slowly before his eyes looked at the hands she reached out towards him. It looked like he thought about it for a moment before he slowly began to walk towards her. He stopped half way and then he thought again, he looked at the book and then he nodded and continued to walk until he came so that he was right in front of her.

His green eyes looked up into her face and then he tilted the head a little to the side. "....you have pretty eyes" he commented before he hugged her, he wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her calmly, that was the sign he got as she reached out towards him with her hands. He sighed a little. "...d-d-do you want to ....read with me?" he asked lowly, he took a chance here since Selia had been so nice to him maybe this lady also would be nice to him? "and....I live with Selia at the girls dorm....but please do not....tell anyone....or...they might throw me out...and I like to be with Selia...she is nice and she cleaned my wounds..." he let go of her and took a steep backwards, then he pulled up a part of the shirt and showed her the bandages he had around his body. One could only guess how many wounds he had under there....but since most of the back was in bandages one could guess it to be very many.

Alex breathed a sigh of relief that Daniel wasn’t going to run off, she would have felt horrible if she scared the boy off while trying to actually help him. As Daniel walked over to her she wasn’t sure what he was going to do or say she just watched him as stare into her eyes for a moment. She smiled inwardly hanging out with this boy actually made her feel tall again. She was going to thank him when he commented on how pretty her eyes were when Daniel all of a sudden hugged her. At that moment her eyes would have bugged out of her head from the shock if it was at all possible. Alex had no idea what to do and felt extremely uncomfortable by the hug. Should she hug him back? She wondered as she started to put her hands around him to hug, or not. Thankfully it was over as quickly and as awkwardly as possible. That was awkward, she thought.

“Well…” She said still a little thrown off by the hug. “Sure I would be glad to read to you. But can you tell me a little bit more about Selia?” Alex asked she wanted to meet this girl now find out what she knew about this boy and why she was hiding him. “And what kind of wounds did you have? When did you get them?”

Daniel looked very happy that she wanted to read to him, he smiled and then he listened to her words as she began to ask her questions. He thought about them and then he frowned a little. "Well I know she is really nice, I really have not asked her very much about things like what she likes to do and such." he explained first with a thoughtful voice, he placed one hand to his cheek and thought for another moment. "She is just cool, and nice and she told me I could stay with her and she is going to buy an apartment in the city and then I will get my own room" he looked very happy as he said these last words.

The questions about the wounds made him a little unsure. "Well....I had a little of this and a little of that actually. Some of them hurt when I laid down and some actually got worse with time....for some reasons." he made a pause and then he sighed a little and looked down on the floor. "...dad....he....he often beat me when he drank. Often because he said....I was a bad son, I was worthless and I never did anything but be a problem" his voice was sad and his shoulder started to shake a little as he talked. "I remember when I tried to run away from home, and the police found me and took me back home. Then he...he...." he dropped the book all of a sudden and then he simply lost all energy in his legs and he sat down on the floor and wrapped his arms around the knees. "He said he was going to kill me if I ever did that again" tears appeared in his eyes. "He was going to put me inside of the oven and....kill me..."

“Well that’s very nice of her.” Alex nodded. Well at least that told her she was an older student here and at least in some way she sounds responsible. But Alex had remind herself she was getting the story about the girl threw the filter of a seven year old boy. “She sounds like a decent person.” At least Daniel is in good hands now.

Alex was filled with rage and guilt over Daniel’s retelling of the abuse he withstood and a little fear but she was pretty sure that that was her picking up Daniels fear. She couldn’t believe a parent would treat a child like that. Well okay yeah she could she wasn’t a naive fool, but to hear the grizzly details from someone who had endured said abuse, it made something that was just a piece of knowledge in the back of her mind all to personal. Then there was the guilt, she was now regretting asking Daniel to tell her it, why would she do that make him remember such horrible things. Alex cursed herself for being such an idiot.

“Well,” She said forcing a smile and walking over to the end of the stairs and took a seat. “Come on sit by me.” She patted the spot on the chair next to her. “I think instead of just me reading it to you. I think you should try and read it to me. When we get to words you don’t understand I’ll help you with them.”

Daniel looked up as she said she wanted him to come and sit down by her on the stair. He removed the tears with the sleeve of his shirt and then he nodded and picked up the book from the floor before he got to his feet and walked over to her. The boy sat down at her side and looked at the girl and even if he was a little red around the eyes and all that he looked happier.

He nodded when she said the idea about letting him read and she would help. "OKey Alex" he said. "I.....I will do my best and read what I can." he grinned a little and then he frowned a little and turned the eyes down to the book on his knee. He glanced up at her again and then down to the book. It looked like he was unsure and then he slowly opened the book to the first page. "Well....should I start then?" he asked carefully, but he had a feeling that she was going to say yes so he began to examine the words he saw on the first page, and he began to try and read from the page, it was very slow and he had to reread the words a few times to get a hang on how to say them.

Alex was glad to see that Daniel was at least appearing to be better, or at least well enough to come sit by her and read. “It’sokay just do your best,” Alex said as she leaned in too look over his shoulder at the book. She had to admit, he really wasn’t good a reader. He read slow and often mispronounced or completely misread words. But she decided she was going to help this kid in any way she could. And was wondering if a book store on this island might sell some preschool reader books that help kids read, she would have to check that out during the weekend. Then of course she decided she was going to have to talk with this girl Daniel was living with. My god, Alex thought, when did I become such a busy-body?
