Hellen was beyond worry as she floated high in the air upon the wings of light as was her angelic right as she felt out through the choas below. Even though it had been only a few years after the quake there was still choas. There was always high levels of it impacting everything long term after something so devistating. Had she eyes in her current form she would be crying feeling for the plight and pain of those below. Especially since there was a Vitue down below.

They had been holding out for so long in all of this. At first she tried the larger population centers and she had found nothing. Now she had resorted to scowering the areas that were sparsly even populated by the animals of Haiti yet. Stopping for a moment to plead to the Heavens again for guidance in her search she felt an ever slight pull in one direction.

Seeing no need to question the feeling she begun flying at speed in that direction. What she found to her sight was a crumbling home but to her surprise and horror she felt the pang of the Virtue below. The small house seemed determined to collapse on one spot but was being stopped by something.

In a small panic Hellen dove towards the structure and only just stopped herself before a hard landing as she used her wings like many hands and begun to tear away at the building as if the building was a large animal attacking her child.

To her the digging wasn't going at the pace she wanted and more tndrils of light begun to sprout from her shoulders as she began to glow with the ammount of light coming off of her. Eventually she made an opening in the debris allowing for her to see inside.

She saw a malnutritioned child in a dome of light crying and scared. Seeing this made Hellen gather her strength and her wings went harmlesly through the shield and with a small gust of wind and effort she pushed the rest of the debris away. Once that was done she looked upon the child once more and carefully she approached her blazing silver wings behind her as she placed her hand gently on Tha barrier before pushing through without effort.

Gently, Hellen leaned down and wrapped her arms gently around the young one cradeling them close. "Oh my child. I'm so sorry I was delayed. Please forgive me..." She said as her pure toned voice sang to the child even though there sounded to be a lump in her throat. If she had human eyes at that moment she would have sprung a new freshwater spring where she knelt.

The earthquake has probably been the worst thing that had ever happened to him.

People liked to say that anything before a certain point in a kid's life was more or less inconsequential because they tended to have infantile amnesia, and anything bad that happened would eventually fade into the white noise of their subconsciousness and they wouldn't be affected by it at all.

Though, it was more accurate to say that they wouldn't remember the details of the event. What he would remember was the feeling of the Earth rearing and shaking like a monster that has slumbered for a long time being awakened from its rest and roar, the way the very sky seemed to shake and turn a sickly gray-blue-green. He would remember the sound of crumbling buildings trapping people and screams of agony, he'd remember the ugly, loud sound of a trees snapping almost cleanly in two. He would remember getting separated from his mama and papa as all their neighbors surged to evacuate, and he would remember the sound of the bridge supports snapping, like a camera taking a picture.

He would remember the warmth of his mother's hand, and icy coldness he felt moments later.

After that, Thierry had the distinct feeling that he was all alone.

The survivors had empathy for him. They took him in, shared their scraps. They were less open-minded than his own parents, so they didn't dress him like a boy, and gave him dresses that were itchy and shoes made of plastic. He stayed inside most of the day and had to cook and clean as well as he was able, knowing that water was more valuable than money at that moment in time.

He lived that was for three years, day in and day out.

It was with much dread and excitement that he returned to his home. There had been rebuilding efforts since then, but there were many still homeless, many still without access to clean water and to school. His house had been shaken by the earthquake and weathered by rain and wind.

It had taken him a few tries to get a fire going. He set places on the floor for himself and his parents and spooned himself what was basically just an amalgamation of vaguely edible things he'd managed to collect.

Thierry lived in his old home for about a month before it gave a horrifying wheeze and tipped like a house of cards.

Next thing he knew, he was surrounded in bright warm light that smelled like his mom.

So disoriented and confused, when arms were wrapped around him and cradled close, despite the voice sounding nothing like his mother, he found himself whispering--"Mama?"

Helen pushed back from its position and as she did so it seemed motes of light began to coalesce and form a human face where light had shone none a moment previous revealing her fair skin and brown braid, as well as the tears flowing freely down her cheeks. The child just called her mama, it broke her heart to see the little one like this.

"I'm sorry my child, but she has passed...but she did pass a message along that she wants you to know. She will always love you and she is sorry that she was forced to go. But I am here to say that I am here to help you little one." She adjusted her arms so she could support the little one better. She wanted to stop crying but couldn't help herself out of joy, sadness and regret for not arriving sooner.

"Your ever kind heart has shown brightly as a beacon and you have been given a boon and gift for such pure Virtue. While you learn to control these abilities I am to be your guardian and teacher." while she spoke her voice still carried the pure tone it had before as her silver tendrils of warm light shown. "I can take you some where to be safe and with others who are as pure as you...would you like that?" she said this last bit making sure that the little one was aware she would not take him against his will.

It was here that she noticed how weak the young child in her arms was. With a sad smile she leaned forward and kissed them on the brow giving a smalest gift of her grace to renurish the little one as if their hard quest for food over the years had not happened. She then whispered softly to herself "I should not have dallied in my search." fresh tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked upon the child with the smile on her lips.

Thierry didn't really understand what Helen was telling him very well. Being hungry, scared, and almost dying weren't exactly the ideal circumstances to be thrown a ton of life altering information. From what the angel had told him, though, he could piece together the fact that his Mama and Papa weren't coming back because they "passed", and that she was offering him a place of safety and warmth with other people like him.

The Haitian boy was hesitant to leave. What if his mom and dad came back? She'd said they'd passed, but they could always come back. Though, judging by the message the angel told him, maybe they passed the house and didn't want to come back. Had they left him all alone? When would they come back? They would come back soon right? Right?

With the thought of his parents electing to leave him, tears bubbled up in his eyes, but he forced himself to not cry. Remember what you went through to get that water, he thought. Don't waste them on tears.

A kiss on the forehead, and Thierry felt better, his mind cleared, his throat stopped being parched, and his body got heavier in Helen's grip. With his mind registering that there had been some kind of sustenance, he could think a little more clearly.

His heart felt heavy.

"What do you want with me?"

Brushing a little bit of the childs hair back with her hand she tried to keep how sad she was for this little one for thier trials, but the question they asked to her was not something she could answer half heartedly. "What I want little one is to be allowed to care for you and watch you grow into someone exceptional." saying this did allow her to genuinly smile.

"You are one of a few people on the planet who has been given a tremendous gift. You have the Virtue of Kindness a power that you have gained by careing deeply towards others under even the most difficult times. My name is Helen, I too have a Virtue. I was given wonderful task of gathering you and others together so that we could grow and support each other..." Helen realized at that moment she was probably over loading the child with a lot to take in...and repeating herself as well, that wasn't a good sign...well for her anyway.

"but we can talk about that later. Would you like something to eat little one, and what is your name so I may call you by it?" Helen said in a sort of conspiratorial tone trying to make them feel a little better. If at least more comfortable with her.

Thierry let himself be touched by the woman, let her stroke his hair as he realized he was dirty. He couldn't expend water on washing or anything like that if he couldn't drink it afterwards. The answer she gave to his question only confused him more. She wanted to be allowed to care for him? What was that supposed to mean? Thinking a little, he assumed she meant something like a caretaker, like the lady down the street who let him practice his letters in the dirt outside her house.

Something like that. But he didn't know where this angel had come from, or where her house was. He'd never seen her before in his life. was she one of those foreigners his Dad used to talk about, and point out on the streets behind his hands. Was she going to take him away from his house, from the city, from the island?

Was he going to be stolen?

Her speech about the virtue of kindness fell on unattentive ears as he wondered what he could do if this lady took him away from his home. What if someone came looking for him, how would they be able to find him? He had to look out for the people, like his mama and papa told him to. They were the ones in charge of this place, in charge of praying to the Loa, making the connection for everyone.

That was his job now.

"My name is... Thierry. Thierry.... Papein..."

He stammered a little, tried to get his bearings. He didn't want to go, not with this admittedly strange looking but nice lady, not if it meant leaving everything and everyone.

"I.... uhm.... what is your name?"

"Why my name is Hellen Virtue. Bearer of Humility..." about to go on another tangent about bearers Hellen cut herself off again realizing that she was still talking to such a young child "...I'm glad I found you Thierry. Such a good name if I do say so myself."

"now what shall we do about you cloths and hair. You've had such a hard time dear Thierry..." not really knowing what was going to be needed she decided her best course of action was going to be to get Thierry to trust her. "...how can I help you?" Hellen gave another soft warm smile to Thierry as the rest of her angelic form slowly faded to reveal a simple green blouse and tan skirt under a cooking apron.

Thierry watched, started to get confused when she talked about bearers and things like that, but then she seemed to fade away, and he was worried that somehow him not believing her story caused this to happen. Her whole body changed into one that was easier for him to understand.

She was definitely easier to look at now.

When she asked about how she could make him trust her, he squirmed a little. He didn't know. She was a stranger, and he was always told not to trust strangers.

"W.... w...." he started. "Will you.... tell me if Vodun is bad?"

He'd heard a lot of people who came here said that vodun was evil, or creepy.... but if this lady was trustworthy and nice, then she wouldn't say those kinds of things.

Helen smiled down a Thierry, "Why would it be evil child? It is just another aspect of the great works of the High Heavens. To put it one way, I am the Spirit of Humility. As you grow you will learn to channel the Spirit of Kindness. That is if you want to learn, this is not something forced spin you." There was a little bit of worry in Helen's heart that this child would.

"Vodun like I said is the worship of all that is good in the world. And you should never let anyone tell you differently little Thierry." Helen looked at Thierry's clothes a bit more closely at tgat moment they seemed wrong somehow. Like the clothes were only being worn by Thierry because they were forced upon them. "You dont seem comfortable in you own clothes darling Thierry, what sort of clothes would you prefer in the future?" Being genuinly curious but she did not want to push hard on the child.

The child listened to this strange woman's words and nodded. She didn't think that it was evil or creepy, and though it was just another part of him, another way to speak to the forces of good in the universe. If she thought that way, then there was no way that should could mean or bad or evil. That was how his logic worked, and he would not accept any other explanation.

Only mean people would call another person's religion evil.

When she mentioned his clothes, he looked down. That's right. The woman who had taken him in told him that he had to dress like a girl, because he was a girl.

Except he wasn't. He'd never felt comfortable or right wearing the clothes the girls wore, or calling himself "Judeline" as his parents had named him when he was born.

"No," he said. "I hate these clothes."

He fidgeted. "I wanna wear pants and shirts and sneakers... and be a boy."
