Wei couldn't keep a big grin from climbing onto his face when Hari complimented him. Yay! If those were the kinds of questions that customers would ask him, then he wouldn't have too hard of a time answering those. He liked sweets, and if he was allowed to eat the leftovers he planned to be intimately familiar with them.

He could almost hear his tummy rumbling at the thought of rejected sweets that he would be allowed to eat. If the Cafe even did that. Well, time would only tell when he got to the establishment and asked for a job.

Almost with a snap, the little monkey too remembered that they were in the middle of a scene and took the pretend menu from Hari.

The next step then would be to put in the order and then bring the food back when it was finished right? ...hmm, but something about that wasn't right...

Maybe...

"No problem," he said, pretended to press the menu to his chest. "I'll put in your order and I'll be back with your food in a little bit."

Hari was so proud. Wei was picking this up so fast. If Wei bothered to glance at him while he was preparing his order, he would give him a big thumbs up.

Hm. He wasn't Hari. He was a customer. As a customer, he probably had a backstory. Let's see... He would be a college graduate, hoping to make it into the world of creative writing. He would have a novel in mind — a crime serial, with a hard-boiled protagonist, except in these modern times, the detective would be a lesbian woman. She had an affair with the chief of police.

He started to pretend type on his pretend laptop. It was very convincing, considering he would occasionally tilt his head at the monitor, shaking it from time to time going 'no no no no'. He wondered if his work was too derivative for the modern audience.

He glanced at Wei, wondering what he would do next.

Wei walked over to the counter near the sink, looking around briefly for a cup, noticing one sitting in the drying rack. That was good, he would definitely not be able to reach the top cabinets. The curse of being under five feet. He checked to make sure the cup was clean and dry and set it aside, checking what he'd asked the spirit to transcribe. Banana bread.

Well, they had actual banana bread sitting around, but having actual food and a fake drink would probably be crossing streams. Not to mention Hari couldn't eat the bread, and he wasn't sure how deep the allergies ran. There were some people who couldn't even be too close to things they were allegic to, and while he was fairly certain that wasn't the case with Hari, it was better safe than sorry. So he had a mug which he placed on a dish, and a seperate dish to hold the banana bread.

He turned around to check if Hari had an subtle guidance and saw him...

...pretending to type?

Well, he was probably putting on a persona or something for the purposes of their role play.

Walking back to the table, careful to balance the cup on the dish, he started to set the "latte" somewhat away from Hari's pretend laptop. "Careful, it's hot. Here's your mocha latte, and here's the banana bread."

Hari was on the third chapter of his crime serial: The detective finds out that one of her ex-lovers had tampered with the crime scene. He was actually getting into it. This was good stuff. He filed it to write at the back of his brain.

When Wei arrived with his "coffee" and "banana bread", Hari clapped his hands. "That was wonderful, sweetie! Waiting tables is just doing a lot of that, so I'm sure you you're going to wow them with your know-how."

And then the oven went ding.

Hari stood up, put on his oven mitts and pulled out the second batch of banana bread from the oven. He placed the loaf of bread on the cooling rack, fanning some of the steam away with his hand. "God, have you ever smelled anything more heavenly?" He smiled. "I'm going to leave it to cool. Good job to the both of us!"

He offered his hand to Wei for a high five.

Once he set down the food and drink, their pretend ended and Wei was satisfied. He'd just done his first table wait! Even though the actual thing would probably be a bit more hectic with him trying to balance more than one table with more than one order and actual food, he felt confident that he would be able to do that multiple times without any real fear.

Yeah, he was definitely getting into it.

"It was fun!" He said, bouncing slightly, his tail curling a little. "D'you think I'll do a good job? Will the customers like me?" He gasped. "Is there a uniform? I don't think I'll be able to fit into a uniform.

The short sharp ding the oven made brought his attention back to the present, and his nostrils flared with the sweet smell of baking magic.

Wei salivated at the fresh banana bread before remembering he had his own, trotting over to it and breaking another piece off of the loaf. It was still warm, but cool enough to the touch that he could touch and eat without and discomfort, brushing the crumbs off his hands

With a big grin, he brought both his hands to Hari's own, giving him an energetic high five. "Good job us!"

"Of course you'll do a good job. And they'll totally love you, Wei! You're a cutie pie." He pinched his cheek for emphasis. "Don't worry about the uniform. They're custom made for the special looks of the waiters. Mine's actually really pretty, it has this gold embroidery — you'll see it when you get there."

Hari laughed as they high-fived. As the pan began to cool down, he flipped it over. The banana bread was, of course, perfectly made. Hari was an expert baker. He pulled a knife from the rack — the one labeled 'Hari' — and began to cut them in even slices. He took a post-it from the refrigerator magnet and labeled it "For everyone." Setting the knife aside and taking one of the slices for his own, he placed the plate of banana bread on the counter with the label "for everyone."

Hari smiled at Wei, nibbling at his banana bread a bit. "I get really full easily. Besides, I can always make more if I want."

Wei stared at him when he said that they would make a tailor-made uniform for him. That sounded expensive... but the idea of having a uniform made to fit him was an exciting one. It would be the most extravagant thing he'd ever had for himself, and it made him feel happy at the idea that there could be something in this world made for him and only for him.

He watched with wide-eyed curiosity as he labelled the banana bread as "for everyone" man, if Hari baked food for his dorm mates then he must be really well-liked.

"I do too. But that has more to do with me being little." He said, leaning back from the counter and looking up at Hari. "But I eat a lot coz I like to run and jump and climb and stuff."

Looking back at his own banana bread, he broke off a chunk and put it in his mouth. "I bet if you felt better you'd have fun running and walking and jumping and climbing too."

"Probably! I used to run and walk and jump and climb a lot as a child. I remember liking it. I climbed a lot of high trees. My mother..." He smiled fondly, remembering. "She'd wait around the trees and she won't move until I go down because she didn't want me to get hurt. I'd feel bad for climbing because she'd always get worried."

He shook his head. The golden parts of his childhood — the ones untainted by him becoming a monster — were precious to him, but they made his heart ache all the same. "We should clean up," he told Wei.

Wei's eyes widened as Hari started talking about his mother. He didn't know why it was it felt so surreal to him to hear about Hari's mom--everyone had a mom, after all--but something about hearing about how Hari used to be so active, and how his mom would wait at the bottom of the tree with worry...

It felt like some kind of secret fairy tale he was being told.

When he said they should clean up, it snapped him from his temporary reverie and he grasped a paper towel, wetting it and using it to wipe down the counter space and collect the crumbs and remaining banana goop he'd left behind from his energetic mashing.

"My mom worked all the time," Wei said, smiling as he cleaned. "She used to work so much that she got sick, but she got better at home because we couldn't go to the doctors."

He tossed the used paper towel in the trash. "But she was really nice most of the time, even though she was always sleepy."

Hari smiled. He loved hearing about other people's mothers. To him, mothers always invoked a warm feeling of safety and security, a kind of safety and security he was unable to feel now. "Your mom sounds like a great person. I'd like to meet her someday."

He was mechanically cleaning up the counters, putting dishes in the sink and wiping spilled areas with a wet cloth. As he washed the dishes, he gestured for Wei to help dry them. "What about the rest of your family?"
