Xavier sighed as he polished the dark mahogany counter-top for the seventeenth time, "Oh god, I've been keeping count!" He lamented to himself as he stared wistfully at his reflection. Everything was in place, his vest and tie were immaculate, his hair was neatly cut, and the watch on his wrist cost more than some houses. Although money was exactly one of his many problems.

This shop had cost him the last of his savings, and most of his college fund. Even though the lighting and locale could be better, for how bad Xavier's money situation was, this was the best he could do.

A dark, drab building in the seedier part of town with an entrance that opened into the scenic view of the nearest back alleyway. You know, the view all five star hotels would kill for. He huffed in annoyance as he stared at his handmade "Help wanted" Flier.

"Maybe I should just hire a graphic artist." He grumbled as he stared at his crudely drawn image of a magical diagram that he had printed off some website. "Cool factor they said. Cool factor my ass." He let the flier slip from his fingers and rest on the counter top. As he gazed out across the many semi-empty shelves of his shop, he sighed once again. "I'm almost tempted to call daddy dearest and beg for my allowance back....almost." He said absentmindedly and then shuddered at the thought of being involved in such an unseemly thing. Not to mention the rest of the family would never let him live it down.

"If someone doesn't walk through that door soon, I'm closing shop and becoming a stripper." Xavier thought to himself before he let out a discontent huff and stared at the door.

Ethan thought it was about time he found himself a job. Back home, he had his paper round that he would do but he had never had an official job. Of course, it would have to part-time or out of college hours since he was still a student but quite honestly, he needed the money. He couldn't keep relying on the cash his parents had saved up for him.

Fliers all around the town had advertised a place called Darkheart artefacts which had opened recently and was looking to hire staff. It had late opening times but Ethan was used to staying up late, though he hoped he wouldn't have to work a shift for the whole seven hours it was open.

Walking down the streets of the underground, Ethan came across an alleyway that had a staircase leading down. Presuming this was the place he was looking for, he ventured below to a large oaken door. Creaking it open, he wandered inside.

A smartly dressed man was behind the counter. "G'day. This is Darkheart artefacts, right?" he asked, looking around at the relatively empty shelves. "I hear you were looking to hire. Just wondering if I could get an interview or something." He presumed that he would need to schedule a meeting and show his qualifications.

Xavier gave the newcomer a once over. Not over dressed, although he didn't look like he lived in a cardboard box either. "His hair could be less bright." Xavier thought to himself. He nodded in confirmation as he was asked if this was the right place. "Indeed! Welcome to my little hole in the wall." Xavier said as he gestured to the dim store interior.

Upon the word interview being mentioned, Xavier straightened his posture and a gleam returned to his silver eyes. "Well I'll be, you've made a wonderful decision by coming here! One moment!" He exclaimed as he disappeared into the back of the shop.

He returned shortly with a chair which he sat on the opposite side of the store counter. "Have a seat, we'll discuss job opportunities, qualifications and finally wages. If all goes well, you'll start work tomorrow." Xavier said as he beamed confidently at the man across from him. "Ah! Where are my manners!" he said in an exasperated tone.

"I'm Xavier Desouk the third, owner of Darkheart Artifacts and collector of interesting things." He said as he held out his hand in greeting.

It took a moment for Ethan to adjust to the dimness of the place; it could do with better lighting, though Ethan presumed that removing the mysterious atmosphere would ruin the 'feng shui' of the place (or whatever they say).

"Oh, now?" he asked, slightly surprised. Ethan presumed that the shop owner would be busy and he hadn't brought his credentials with him. Tomorrow was rather soon too, not that he was complaining. The sooner he got a job, the better.

Shaking the man's hand firmly, Ethan took a seat. "I'm Ethan Williams. A pleasure to meet you," a closed smile on his face as he introduced himself. "Right, I don't exactly have anything with me at the moment. To be honest, I didn't think I'd even get an interview. I'm happy to reschedule if that would be best."

"Nice to meet you Ethan." Xavier said enthusiastically as he beamed at him. "Credentials aren't much of a problem as this is a very peculiar job. Tell me, do you have any experience in magical artifacts and weapons? Or perhaps any previous experience with running a front desk, or sweeping?" Xavier asked, although he paused and tapped his chin in a thoughtful manner.

"Are you allergic to trans-dimensional gunpowder by the way? Oh! Or shellfish, definitely shellfish." Xavier said as he retrieved a small leather bound notepad from the interior pocket of his vest. He then grabbed a pen from his back pocket and jotted down a few notes.

"Hmm...Any sensitivity to light, loud noises, or the possibility of being in close proximity to explosions?"

"Well, I found this ring in a dodgy building and it gave me powers," he explained as he twisted the black and blue ring on his finger. "Does that count? And I haven't ever worked behind a desk before but I'm a fast learner." Ethan tried to make himself seem like more of a worthy employee despite having no experience.

A small laugh escaped his mouth. "I don't think so. Can't say I've ever come in contact with it. The gunpowder, I mean, not the shellfish." The note scribbling unsettled him a little since he had no idea what Xavier was writing about him but his next question was even more so.

"Erm..." Ethan presumed that he would just be selling the items, not in any danger. He didn't want to seem unsure - that could cost him the job. "No," he said without a doubt in his voice, though his mind was thinking otherwise. At least the job would be interesting, maybe?

Xavier peered at the other man in front of him before he smiled again the mention of such a ring interested him greatly, however Xavier restrained himself. "Well, seeing as I think you'll fare better than my last assistant, consider yourself hired!" Xavier exclaimed, once again flashing him a very charismatic smile.

He then reached under the desk and retried a small box. Upon opening the box, Xavier reached inside and handed Ethan a sizable key made of wrought iron. "This is the spare key to the place, you'll need it if I'm ever not here to open up early."

He paused and once again and tapped his pencil against his cheek. "Oh, and make sure that you lock the door after closing. I'd hate to have some vagabond waltz in thinking this place is abandoned, only to set off the anti-pedestrian cannons. Ammunition for those things ain't cheap if you understand my meaning!" He chuckled light heartedly and then scribbled another note into his notepad.

"You'll start by earning nine dollars and fifty three cents an hour working the front desk taking phone calls and working the register as well as taking orders. If you have any other questions, now's the time to ask." Xavier said as he glanced up from his notebook.

"Ace! Realy?" That was way faster and easier than he expected. Ethan didn't care about the slight hint at Xavier's previous employee - he now had a job! Maybe the guy was desperate and lacking interest in the position. Either way, he didn't care.

Taking the over-sized key, Ethan inspected it before shoving it into his pocket, looking up at the mention of boobie traps. "Anti-pedestrian cannons...?" He hoped that they wouldn't be triggered on him. Deciding that the guy was messing with him, he burst out laughing with a sense of uncertainty.

The pay was pretty decent; not bad for his first job. He was sure that he could manage a few phone calls and serve customers. The job was going to be a breeze. "Oh, yeah, what would my hours be like? Only, I'm still in college," he asked, hoping to take a glance at the man's notebook.

"You'll be working mostly night hours on the weekends. Generally from eight to twelve thirty. Other than that, you shouldn't be called in during the week unless it's horrifically busy. Or unless you'd like to work more."

Xavier said as he glanced up momentarily to look at the man cross the counter. After second, he went back and jotted down a final note before closing his notepad and tucking his pen back up his sleeve. He stretched slightly and then smoothed out his vest.

"Now then, training begins Friday at sundown, so be here by no later than six-thirty if possible. If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or quandaries, I can be reached here." With a flourish, Xavier produced a business card from his other sleeve which had his many phone numbers, emails and other such information neatly printed on the dark maroon card.

"As far as I'm concerned, you're free to go. I look forward to working with you." Xavier said with a small bow.

Ethan gratefully took the business card and slotted it into the pocket of his shorts. He had done it. He actually had a job now. A smile spread across his face at the thought as he rose from the chair. "Ace! I'll be there. Thank you so much," he blurted.

Pivoting on his heels, he slowly made his way towards the door, trying to hide his smugness. "Oh," he said as he swung back around, a finger outstretched. "You won't be disappointed, Mister Desouk." Noticing the hand that was pointing was emitting a light blue hue, Ethan tried to subtly shake his hand to get rid of the light, though subtlety wasn't the outcome. Awkwardly smiling as the light had now gone, he repeated: "thank you," before turning back to leave again through the heavy wooden door.

Once the door was closed behind him, Ethan rested the back of his head against it as he closed his eyes and sighed. Xavier had hired him no less than a minute and he already embarrassed himself. Still, he was not willing to let the man down.
