A Part of the Scenery

A great many places of peace and quiet could be found on the Academy, its sprawling grounds home to gardens, fields, and rooftops aplenty. Places of relative tranquility, balanced efficiently between loneliness and proximity to the classrooms. In one such garden, Beta sat, book in hand, pondering the contents he was reading. Most of the places to sit in the school were distinctly human-sized, and it was more efficient for Beta to sit here than in a study room. It was preferable, considering that it was the stuff he was made of. He sat upright on a boulder, and perused a book of man's deeds, covering most of the last three hundred years. Beta was still learning how large this world was, and how many people were in it. For time immemorial, he had been a mindless construct, built only to serve. But now, there were more thoughts in his mind, more things to be known. Beta had developed a fascination with the outside world since his 'awakening' as most of his teachers had called it. His teachers called it a sense of 'wonder', but Beta was not sure if that was correct. It didn't 'feel' like wonder, but then again, he didn't know what 'wonder' felt like exactly. He continued to ponder this, his thoughts distracting him more and more until the problem seemed intractable. He did not know how to proceed.

Golem Beta sat upon the stone, runes faintly glowing, but other than that, he was simply a large statue of a man, holding a paperback history book.

Fulger wasn't normally up this early- being technically nocturnal. But he'd had an appointment that had to be done during the daytime. So across the campus he walked, returning towards his dorm.

He rubbed at his glowing green eyes as he trudged forward and realized he just wanted to stop and rest a little bit. Out of the way of all the people running around to and from classes. Even in the daylight areas of nature had a certain call towards him and he found his way wandering over towards a really large rock. From the direction he was headed he didn't notice the book or that the stone figure on top wasn't in fact a person. He moved into the shadow being cast by the stone figure and sat down, leaning his head back against the decorative boulder.

"Maybe... a nap," he mumbled as he yawned and closed his eyes. Just for a moment.

((Fenn I have a copy of what you posted for Fenn if you want that, or you can just redo it))

Legally speaking, Fenn was of the opinion that classes should never take place before lunchtime on any given day.

Today’s “How To Normal” seminar had been okay. Not that Fenn remembered much of it, since he’d opted to stare at the clock and wish he was elsewhere instead of taking notes. The only requirement for that class was to show up. Your grades were your attendance, which meant that Fenn attended, and that was all he was obligated to do. He figured that most of that class was geared toward more eldritch creatures than him, anyway…

He rubbed his buggish eyes, squinting blearily across the lawn as he fluttered out of the school. It was about time for him to flit into the community center for a daily dose of free coffee.

From the looks of it, he wasn’t the only one feeling tired. Over yonder, in the shadow of a giant statue sitting atop a boulder, some green-haired kid was passed out on the grass. Fenn squinted further. It was hard not to envy the little guy. A little part of him whispered, “let’s start a nap party”.

Before he’d thought twice about it, Fenn had hovered over to the statue’s shoulder, and within about three seconds of sitting out of the sunlight, was half fallen asleep.

The first few days he took to settle in were uneventful. He moved furniture and various necessities from the moving van to where he wanted them in his dorm and stocked his chest of drawers with clothing. When he was finished each day, he decided that a walk around the grounds and surrounding area in order to get a feel for his new life. Daylight sifted through dark clouds as he made his way out into the courtyard and hurried to huddle beneath a tree, just moments before that sky gave way to a deluge.

"Ack," he huffed as the back of his uniform was unceremoniously drenched. "This wasn't in the plan." He glanced out across the area to where some others seemed to be passed out around a rock. They were in for a rude awakening.

"I'll just have to wait here for the rain to pass," he decided.

Arik peeled the wet clothes from his torso and draped them over a limb to dry as he leaned back against bark and sighed. It was better to be cool than chilled, he was sure of that, yet he was shivering. The youth folded his arms for warmth and wondered if his luck had run out.

Making her way quickly across campus, Liliana almost didn't see or take notice of the statue of the man reading a book as she ran across the grassy expanse. But as she neared the stone statue, she slowed her pace and then came to a stop. Glancing then around the courtyard, she had the distinctly odd feeling that something was off. But what was the cause of this, she wasn't sure.

Staring at the statue casually for a moment, she wrinkled her nose as she took note of the other students nearby. Frowning suddenly, Liliana realised then that it was the statue itself that was out of place. It hadn't been there this morning, that she was sure of.

Approaching the statue a bit more, Liliana walked slowly around it, careful not disturb the two younger boys men, napping as she inspected it, wondering where it had actually come from.

Golem Beta was 'stuck', as one of the other professors had described it. Quite an intractable situation indeed. How was something like Golem Beta to make sense of the things which it had never experienced, and then to ascribe notation to those concepts. No satisfactory methods of rapidly resolving the discrepancy between his thought processes and these feelings presented itself as Golem Beta sat at the rock. Well, wouldn't it be himself, or he? He was learning slowly to replace instances of thought conducive to items with thoughts representative of conscious individuals. It was less a matter of gender, Golem Beta assumed that he could 'assign' himself whatever pronouns he chose, they were rather arbitrary considering the material of his construction. There was, however, a masculine sort of nature to Golem Beta's form, he could not deny, and Golem Beta had chosen, for the time being at least, to apply those terms.

Distracted by his delving into philosophy, he had quite forgotten his surroundings, and had reduced power to his other systems in favor of saving the energy in his core. Despite the considerable amount of energy the Academy had 'given' to Golem Beta, the pseudo-man still felt the need to hoard it. Diverting energy to his surroundings, he was surprised to find little people around him. Two were very close, and his groundsense detected two more near the boulder. Golem Beta froze, looking around but not moving his head, so as to not disturb the little one on his shoulder. It was...asleep? Golem Beta glanced down, and spied the other small one, lying close to his feet at the boulder's base. As his core directed more power, protective and conduit runes around Golem Beta's chest began to softly glow, flickering on faintly with a light blue hue. He considered moving away, but he did not wish to disturb the rest of the small ones. Golem Beta needed no sleep himself, but he understood the necessity from the knowledge he managed to steal from Osgood. There could be terrible consequences for the young ones on his shoulder and at his feet, if he moved.

And so Golem Beta did not. He gently closed the book, and turned his head slightly so that he could see the others around him, and continued to think on his individuality, which was becoming a harder concept to realize by the day. He mused, absently (and unknowingly) humming a tune, a low and smooth rumble with a low and smooth melody.

There was a rumbling that seemed to travel through the boulder. Fulger felt more than heard it but it shook him out of his slumber. Glancing around his heart skipped a beat. A bunch of other people were there. And there was a glowing man on the rock above him. And worst of all there was a girl standing right there ready to eat him!

His glowing green eyes grew wide in fear and he made a small sound that was more of a squeak than any real words. Fulger didn't even bother standing up fully before he skittered back around the rock a little, scooting with his arms and legs. "Please don't eat me!" he exclaimed in a panic, mostly at Liliana but now that he saw how large the golem was he wondered if he might accidentally get stepped on.

Right as he was about to say something else the rain clouds that had apparently gone unnoticed up until very recently moved in and began to let forth their rain upon the courtyard. Fulger didn't have time to react before he was suddenly a lot more wet than he wanted to be that day. He yelped and dove for cover under the nearest overhang, a few sparks of electricity cascading across his skin at the sudden wetness but only arcing between parts of his own body.
