A night on the town.

Alex listened quietly to Alice as she spoke. She lightly bit her lip while listening; the taste of her lip-gloss filling her mouth, Alex forgot she even had it on. Once Alice finished Alex didn’t immediately speak, and just looked down herself and Alice’s lap. She was still with her left hand playing the end of her stockings without realizing it.

“It’s okay.” Alex finally said finally looking up into Alice’s grey eyes. “Since, since this happen to me.” She made a gesture with her free hand made a gesture towards her breast. “I’ve been adrift. I felt like I was in the world, but not a part of the world. I hear the thoughts of everyone around me, know what they are feeling and yet I feel I am unable to connect with everyone, I feel isolated from society and alone. And I was perfectly happy with that. Or at least I thought I did.” Alex looked away for a moment as she paused to breath, she watched candle flickering causing the shadows to dance. “But then you came along.” Alex said turning her gaze back to Alice. “I don’t want that anymore. I don’t know why but I feel a connection with you and…” She trailed off for a moment, unsure if she should continue. “Being with you, on this date today, the time we spent together at lunch and last night. I was actually happy for the first time. I felt remotely normal again. I don’t’ want that to end.”

She stopped talking and took a deep gasp of air when she realized she had uncharacteristically been rambling to Alice again and just sat there slowly breathing and staring into Alice’s eyes unsure where to go from here.

When Alex began, Alice relaxed, insomuch as she was not afraid of Alex's response as she said it. By the time Alex had finished, Alice had lost the sense of panic, and in its stead was a smile hidden in the shadow of the candle's light behind her, and yet, she could not think of anything to say. Rain tickled the windows. In the distance, a thunderclap rang out low. Behind the wall to her right, a girl yelled something and was joined by a brief chorus of laughter. It all was a world in motion, and Alice saw herself in it, arms wide to the rain, ears ringing to the thunder, mouth sounding the punchline to a good joke.

She broke the silence with a voiced, floating sigh. Alice got up from the bed, visualizing the tie-pants and men's shirt waiting, folded, in the dresser. She stopped before she passed the foot of the bed, at Alex's side. She leaned close and pressed her lips slowly to Alex's cheek.

...Neither do I, Alex...

Alice pulled away after a second and approached her dresser and began to undo the buttons of her blouse, making sure not to misplace the double-sided buttons of the awkward French cuffs.

Alex’s face turned six different shades of red after Alice kissed her cheek. When Alice pulled away Alex looked back towards the candle and had to stifle herself from giggling excitedly. She couldn’t believe she was acting that way. Yes she was excited she actually had prospects of having a meaningful relationship with someone, something she thought was going to be impossible, but why was she so pity at the moment. Her face was flush, her breathing was sharp and shallow and her heart was beating so hard she was surprised Alice couldn’t hear it and it was all she could do to not giggle like a little school girl, which Alex guessed she kind of was.

Glancing back over to Alice as she was unbuttoning her shirt Alex asked. “Well where do you want to go from here?” She sat there looking at Alice's back, running her finger along the elastic at the top of her stockings.

“Hmmm,” Alice mused playfully, removing the button-up, folding it around the cuff buttons, putting it away. Once the straps of her bra passed her hands and she had her over-sized men's button-up on again, buttoned to her neck, she felt even cooler than before, something to balance against the heat of her thoughts. She was glad to have her back to Alex during the process. Was Alex imagining similar things as she had minutes ago? The thought of being drawn in, maybe by surprise, past the slight backboard of the bed...

She put the thought out as she finished getting into her night-clothes, putting on the large black tie-pants. Head to toe in black. She did not like to do that in public, but alone, she felt like she could fly invisible in a night sky, free from the focus any other color seemed to beckon. Alex's question begged for her nervousness, made her want to be invisible. Alice turned and approached the side of her bed where Alex sat, drawing Alice's attention, maybe without knowing she was aware of it by the way she messed with the elastic that peeked from the bottom of her shirt. Alice thought about participating for a moment and forgot what she intended to do.

She walked to the head of the bed and playfully flopped backwards so that she was next to Alex, looking up at her through her rebellious fringe, lacking for answer.

For the brief moments she was looking at Alice’s bare back as she changed Alex’s imagination ran wild with scenarios and imagery that she was glad Alice could not see. She cursed herself for those thoughts. This isn’t’ what it was about for her, yes it would be nice, but she wanted a more personal relationship with Alice. But then why was her mind still racing with those fantasies?

Alex grinned as she watched as Alice plopped back down on the bed, her head next to her, with that grin that Alice found adorable. Alex just grinned back at her and said, “Well…” She paused as she pulled her legs out from under her and lying on her belly and facing Alice’s head in a way that made a L shape from with their bodies. Her legs bent lightly kicking up and down in the air she rested her head in her hands so it was still looking down at Alice and finally said. “Maybe we should just play it by ear then.” Her suggestive grin going from ear to ear.

Alice searched for the words but again, failed to, though she still found her smile. Alex faced her with a broad, promising smile. The distance between their eyes was a matter of several inches. As Alice lay there, she watched the shadows begin at Alex's cheeks, watched the outline of her smile, and thought that it was unfortunate that mere inches ought to separate them. Alice checked for words, and found only her intent. With renewed tightness in her breath, she looked at the flame on her nightstand. The candle had an hour or two left, burning brightly on it's silver holder. Alice looked back to Alex, and then the room was made dark save for an ember brightened by a sudden breeze.

...Please, pardon one last act of audacity for the evening...

Alice followed her memory and edged closer to where Alex was, where her lips were. She stopped, just as before outside the building, only separated by a shadow of an inch. Alice supported her weight with her right elbow and freed her left hand to find a shoulder, gliding fingertips through the back of soft, straight hair. And then, Alice closed the distance as slow as she could, her breath suspended.

Alex blinked rapidly as the candle went out and the room was bathed in darkness. It took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once they did Alex’s heart skipped a beat to see Alice’s face by less than an inch from her own face, lips puckered. Alex’s immediate thoughts were questioning rather or not this was a silly joke like before. But after a few second she realized it was a legitimate invitation.

Alex pursed her lips and leaned a half an inch forward before realizing, what was the protocol in the situation. Which way does a girl turn their head in the kiss, and what do they do at such an odd angle, and what if the other kisser is a girl too. Alex dismissed those questions realizing Alice really wouldn’t’ be able to judge her poorly if she messed up, she didn’t have much experience kissing other girls either.

Leaning forward ever so slightly Alex’s lips met Alice’s in what she was sure a first time for the both of them. A few seconds later she pulled back smiling and giggling excitedly as she went back in lips ready for another, longer, kiss.

The first, a suspension of belief. She felt the breaths rise up in the both of them. Alice held on until she felt the kiss end. She held on gently, hearing a happy giggles. She chased her breath, chased thoughts, but not really catching up with either of them when she felt Alex nearing. Alice met her, trying to restrain the need to press closer. Closer. Closer. It did not even matter why such a simple contact should warrant the deepest of breaths, the heart hammering so. When it was over, all she could think was not enough, not enough, but she released Alex anyways, again trying to catch her breath.

Alice rolled off her right elbow, back on her back. First kiss. She released a sigh, felt herself smile. The taste of lip gloss lingered with the feeling of the slight pressure. She sniffed a small giggle of her own. It had been so much like that time when she first felt her feet leave ground, so long ago, to the foggy skies. She had no idea what to think back then, and neither did she now.

“...Alex...”

As she kissed Alice for the first time in forever everything to Alex felt normal and natural. She didn’t’ care if this wasn’t her body or what she was born with, Alice approved of it and wanted it and even if the feeling was only temporary she was she was happy. When the kiss ended Alex leaned back again arching her back and holding herself up with her hands she bit her lip and grinned. All she could think about as she watched Alice roll back onto her back is that she wanted more. But what did Alice want, maybe it was her own excitement or Alice was using that same trick that she did when she snuck out this morning but she had no idea what she was thinking and that made Alex very excited but it also scared the hell out of her. What was she suppose to do now, just lay there, leave for her own bed, kiss her again? Alex had to admit she was groping around in a territory she wasn’t familiar with. She wanted to continue but she wasn’t going to do it unless Alice wanted.

“Alice?” Alex said looking down from over Alice, her hair falling down to frame her face, and her deep breaths expanding and contracting her chest and straining the thin fabric of her top.

Alice laid there, feeling the mattress sink. Light barely found its way in the curtains' gaps. Alex's hair, draping down, hid her face in complete shadow. Alice noticed bare skin, the lightest phantom in the dark, where Alex's top had ridden up some inches. Alex asked her name with labored breaths that beckoned the top by innocent steps, all the while revealing movement in the dark not far elsewhere. Alice felt her hands shake as though caffeine had been rolling in them. Alex's lips were so soft; what would she feel like at her exposed sides? Or more above? Or...Alice's breath faltered at the thought of finding out; it could be the start of something she did not want to say no to, something much more than the warm kiss fading from the memory of her lips. She could not conceive of what being ready for that felt like, but maybe it felt no different than how she felt now. Was it even safe to push herself into the dark and take another kiss, then another, and then another?

“Yes,” she asked to the breaths from above, coming from willow hair.
