The hustle and bustle of the loud city caused the little girl to shove her hands over her ears. Where was she? How did she get here? She remembered warmth — a blanket, perhaps? And yes, glancing down beside of her, there was indeed a blanket! She grasped it tightly and started stumbling down the road.

The little girl, with her lovely glowing white-blonde hair, and her soft, porcelain skin, weaved her way through people until she came to the road. Of course, being 'new' to this land, much less this life, the little girl did not know anything about etiquette or how she was supposed to behave — or what was dangerous and what was not.

She put one foot in front of the other and started to stumble her way across the rather busy road. Car horns honked loudly at her — as they swerved to avoid her. The child covered her ears again and began to cry — she closed her eyes tightly as another car swerved; coming much too close for her safety.

The toddler turned heel and began to stumble along toward the way she had come, in tears by the time she reached the sidewalk again. She clambered onto the concrete and began to crawl furiously, trying to get as far away from the road as possible! That was scary, those big, giant monsters trying to eat her!

Dettae would continue to crawl until she found an open door to a shop — and in she went. She gurgled to herself as she crawled across the floor of this store, people stepping over her and paying her no mind. Soon enough the child pulled herself upright to reach and claim a book from the nearest shelf — it would seem she had gone into a book store.

She flipped the pages in a rough fashion — to the point the book could be damaged if she was not careful. She tossed it aside and picked out another one. This time, this one had pictures! She gurgled and cooed to herself as she looked at the pictures, quite content for the time being.

Toby was so excited today. He was excited because he was picking up the next book in a series, and he need-need-needed to get it right now before all the copies sold out. He didn't care that there weren't too many people in the bookstore this early in the morning, even at this time of the year, when people were getting gifts for the bookworms in their lives, but he was just.

He was so excited about it finally coming out! He'd read the last three with fervor when he had a sleep over with his friends. They all fell asleep pretty early while he excitedly read under the book lamp he kept in the night stand but was normally too lazy to use. If anyone had been watching him they would think that he hadn't even read the book, that he hadn't even really glanced at the pages, and instead was just flipping through, pretend reading.

But he had been reading the book, just reading it fast.

He had them both committed to memory, just like he had everything else.

He skipped over to the shelves, running his fingers over the book titles, shifting up and then a little lower when he found--a baby. Well. Huh. He hadn't been expecting that.

The child had a little book in her hand, a picture book, while the book he wanted had been roughly handled and tossed aside. But that was okay, because he could ask if they had another copy.

But. Hmm. What to do about this little girl?

"Hey there little lady," He said softly, crouching in front of her. "What are you doing here?"

The little girl stared upward for a moment, before answering his question as she rubbed her eyes with one hand and held her book in the other, "Tryin' to get 'way from the monster's."

She looked down at the book in her hands for a moment or two, before holding it out. The little girl had soft, shimmering white-blonde hair; and her eyes seemed to move as if liquid were churning within the color of them.

The child studied the stranger as she sat on the floor, offering her picture book to him with a tilt of her little head. "Mister read to Dettae?" She inquired, studying the man for a few more seconds, before she was moving to push herself to her feet.

Monsters?

Really that could mean anyone or anything when it came to this place. She could even be talking about him, with his tiny demon horns and his short, short arrow-shaped demon tail. Technically speaking he was a monster too, at least to the outside world.

He looked at the book she was holding and--why not?--sat down next to her to read it. "Okay, lets read this story."

Toby flipped to the first page and cleared his throat. "Once upon a time, there was a bunny, who lived in a bunny house." He let her look at the image of a bunny bouncing around outside a grassy mound with a round wooden door.

"He had three bunny sisters, and a bunny brother named Phil, who lived in a bunny house over the hill...."

Toby turned the pages and read, sucking the energy out of the child next to him. It was nothing serious, but the longer Toby stayed near her, the more tired she would start to feel, as though she needed to take a nap or something.

As the stranger read to her, she snuggled against him. Her energy was more of a charge than anything — mainly because her energy was artificially made. The little girl took quite a while before she began to yawn.

The child rubbed her eyes with one hand as she giggled and pointed to one of the pictures...

By the time the storybook was done, the man had a barely awake toddler on his hands — most would have fallen asleep, but this toddler had quite a good amount of artificially made energy within her little form — a few more minutes and she'd be out dreaming about rainbows.

Toby dutifully read the story to the toddler, resisting the urge to run around and bounce and be as excited as he felt in that moment. Once the story was done--one of the employees came over and gave him a stern talking to about the bookstore being a bookstore and not a library--he placed it back on the shelve and let out a small sigh.

But now he had another problem. What was he going to do with this sleeping child? He couldn't just leave her here--that would be irresponsible. What if she got childnapped, or something else terrible?

A soft gasp. Toby wouldn't be able to live with himself if something bad happened to her.

"Hey," He said, giving her a poke. "Where do you live?"
