A Light Snack

A lean tall figure had somehow made his way to the cafeteria. It would be his first time eating there since he is new at the school. He had gotten lost two or three times on the way there. He was frustrated about that and awfully hungry at the same time. This figure was Cade Laidon, a new student at the academy, still trying to find his way around, but in need of some food. With one of his backpacks hanging on his back, hiding most of his long light brown hair, he looked around to see all the things that the cafeteria had to offer. He had a hard time deciding on what to have since there was an abundance of good things. "Man, all this looks good. I don't know what I want." He sat at an empty table on his own and took some thought as to what he wanted. Still undecisive, he pulled out a black composition notebook and a black ball point pen from his backpack and started to write in it. He would keep a personal blog or journal to remember his experiences thus far. He then decided what to eat; a rather light snack he chose. He grabbed a small plate and got himself muffin and a bag of potato chips. He sat back down at the same empty table and ate.

Cade managed to take a few bites of his muffin when suddenly a girl, apparently one he did not know, had entered the cafeteria. She too went and got herself a light snack apparently, grapes to be exact. Cade laid his hazel eyes on her for reasons unknown. He was nervous and began to startle a little when she approached the same table he sat at. She said something to him quietly, but Cade was able to here her. She too was looking for an empty table but Cade got there first. When she asked to sit there, he looked up and simply replied few words. "Sure." He gestured to a seat across from him. He prefers to be by himself, but he didn't mind so much.

He watched as the girl took the seat. He took another bite of his muffin as he heard her speak again in a low soft tone of voice. A 'Thank you.' was heard. When Cade heard this, a rare smile had slightly curved his lips. He felt that she was only being hospitable, in a way. He opened up his bag of chips and slipped one into his mouth. He chewed lightly then swallowed without making too much noise. He grabbed his pen again and wrote into his own notebook then bit into his muffin again. After about a minute of dead silence after the girl had asked for his name, he slid his long hair to reluctantly reveal more of his light skinned face and simply responded "Cade."

After Cade had responded to the thin girl, he placed another chip in his mouth and ate it. He then wrote in his notebook again. As to what he was writing about, he felt that it was nobody's business but his own, hence, he kept it to himself. He closed it after writing some more things and took another bite of his muffin. He was about halfway throught it now. He constantly thought that getting acquainted with other people would be difficult, considering his appearance. In this case, he felt he could get used to it after a while. He put his head down as he ate more chips then looked up again realizing that the girl seemed to be trying to start a conversation. He didn't mind, so he went along with it. He answered to her inquiry with these words: "Yes, new I am. Just trying to find my way around. I got lost on my way down here. I'll do best to avoid that happening again...."

She really didn't have to apologize for him losing his way. In fact, it was Cade's own fault that he wasn't paying much attention to his surroundings at the time. By now he finally finished his muffin and was now finishing off his chips. When he was done with those, he took the bag they were in and held it in his hands. Now he was in need of a drink, badly. He wrote in his notebook again. It seemed that he was keeping a personal record of all the things he did that day.

The girl offered him a soda. This was highly unusual. Nobody had ever offered Cade anything before. This truly surprised him and he elected to take advantage of the oppurtunity. "Sure. Thanks."

Cade just continued to write in his notebook as he was done with his light snack. He went on writing about his previous experiences, finding his room, getting lost on his way to the cafeteria, and now being offered a drink by somebody he didn't even know. Indeed writing about something like this would seem weird, but it was for a purpose. He looked up to see a bottle in front of him; it was the soda she bought for him. He carefully grabbed it, twisted the cap off of it and took a few sips. It was surprising to him that a complete stranger would be hospitable to him. For once, he didn't mind it at all.

"Nice." He closed his notebook, placed it back in his backpack and slipped the pen into his pocket. He let out a sigh of relief as his thirst was well quenched. "Cheers." She her smiling for some reason, mainly at him. As he saw this, he blushed slightly, for hardly anyone would ever bother even looking at him, especially a girl. As she inquired him about his time here, he answered "My time here hasn't been long, but it's been going rather smoothly thus far. I think I like it."

Cade went on taking more sips of his soda wondering why this girl was being so kind to him. Why he ever bothered going along with it was beyond belief. As he sipped the drink, he choked on it as the girl asked him how old he is. Why she even bothered asking, he didn't know. A case of nervousness can now be sensed in Cade as he answered her. "Young? Heh. I'm not exactly 'young' so to think; eighteen to be exact."

Cade recovered from his choke. A tear dropped from his eye because of it. He simply wiped it off. "I'll live..." he said as he noticed her leaning toward him. He looked at the girl as she was apparently mimicking his actions, mainly as he sipped his drink. Eighteen years of life; surely that is definitely not old, at least in Cade's mind, it isn't. As she told him her age, which is seventeen, a soft "Oh...." was all that he replied. Apparently she couldn't come up with more questions to ask him, hence, Cade knew now that it was his turn to do the asking. Trying to shake off his nerves, he managed to blurt something out. "So, how long have you been here, at this school I mean?"

Cade finally finished his own drink. When he did, he twisted the cap back on the bottle and placed the bottle to the side. He could only look on as she endured stomach pains. Why was she having these pains? He preferred not to know. Another surprising thing about this little event was the that girl insisted on talking to him. He went along with it. Besides, she is the first person Cade interacts with at the school, so it would seem appropriate. He wondered why she insisted on trying to get to know him. As for how long he has been here, he shrugged before responding. "A week."

Just as the girl got up to throw the empty can and bottle away into the trash, so did Cade. He tossed his empty bag of chips in there as well. He heard her say something again, as in being a possible nuisance, which she was not, really. This is actually the first time in a long time that someone insisted on talking to him other than his loving parents. At his old school, he was considered an outcast, an oddball, and he hated that.

He felt that there was something about this girl that makes him feel comfortable. As to what? He did not know, but he liked it. In response to her next inquiry these were his words: "Umm....Nyax, was it? Usually I would have problems remebering names....anyway, no. You're not being a nuisance. If I made you think that you were, I'm....truly sorry. Really, I don't mind. Actually, it's been quite a long time since I was able to talk to someone like this."
