A fight for glory

As the bell finally rang, every student of every class in each year suddenly bursted out of the door, and into the hallways. William hated reces. Gritting his teeth, he tried not to kill anyone as he made his way to his next class, determined to spend his free hour there rather than in the cafeteria, sure that he could convince Warrior to go and get him some food, if by nothing else, than by threatening that he would kill someone if they make him go through that again. He had math to study anyway.

Taking one look at the south hallway made him frown in disgust. People. Everywhere. There was no way in hell he is walking through that just to get to his next class. Taking a few steps back, he run down the staircase, reaching the lower floors where the second and third year classes were being held, making his way to the other side of the building there. For some reason, the younger students always cleared from the halls much faster, and never made enough of a crowd to draw him mad. He sighed, irritated by the fact that he would have to do this for a two more semesters before he could move to college, he took a look around himself, catching the sight of his new roommate with the corner of his eye.

Nothing could ever go like how one wanted it to, could it? Emil fell back, staggering wildly in an attempt to regain his footing before colliding with the school wall, pain shooting through his (admittedly fragile) body. A whimper escaped him as another boy, maybe a year younger than him, but still larger approached him. He had not meant any harm, he had done everything in his power to avoid confrontation since he got here, but his power had made sure otherwise, just like he knew it was going to. A slight shove had happened, nothing serious, but it had thrown off Emil's concentration and of course, it had resulted in a slight push of telekinetic force, making the other boy stumble. He had done his best to explain himself and apologize, he really had, but it didn't seem to matter to the other student. Did everyone in this school respond to what was happening with violence?

"Please..." He began, still trying to gather his thoughts as stars danced before his eyes. The lockers around him where rattling and various small items were rolling and turning as he could not keep his powers dormant. Various words slipped into his minds from the other students, making his head hurt. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to...There has to be something I can do..."

"Yeah, sorry is what you're going to be." The larger boy growled, grabbing Emil by his collar and lifting him up. As much as Emil could register, he could see small trails of electricity dance in his attacker's free hand.

William stopped, then took a step back, and, within the hundredth part of a second, he was at the larger boys neck. Grabbing it with his left hand, he pushed downward, making him almost fall to his knees, taking, at the same time, a firm hold of the hand which held Emil in the air, squeezing it tight. The boy screamed in pain, and Emil was free.

What the hell do you think you were doing? he asked, looking at the boy whimpering at the ground with a dangerous glint in his eyes. Scum. he said, kicking him in the ribs with such force, that he flew back and hit the wall. William hated bullies.

Are you alright? he asked, turning towards Emil, Spirit and Warrior behind him. The wolf growled at the other boy as he dared move in a desperate attempt at escape, as the warrior stayed silent, his hand on his sword.

Emil fell back the moment he was freed, sinking down to a sitting position. For the time being, he didn't look up or speak. Instead he kept his head lowered with closed eyes, doing his best to get his thoughts and powers in order. Soon enough, the commotion around him ceased to a halt and the words running through his head quieted down to the usual light hissing of white noise. When he looked up, he saw William standing there, his attacker curled up with Spirit growling at him. His roommate saved him? He was grateful, of course, but he couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt. He had tried to not be a bother, after all and now he proved himself to need a savior within the first hours.

Emil slowly got to his feet, his legs still shaking as he nodded. "I'm okay, just a little sore..." He mumbled, not facing William directly. "Not hurt or anything...Nothing serious." He hesitated before speaking up again, looking at the other boy now. "Is he okay?" Granted, he had been assaulted, but that wasn't a reason to seriously harm the assaulter, in his opinion anyway.

He will be. William said, giving Emil and odd look. If he stays where he is and doesn't move that is. he added, looking back at the attacker. Otherwise, I'll break his arm. That should stop him from randomly attacking innocent people good enough.

Turning around, he reached for Emil's shoulder checking for bruises, and possibly broken bones. His body did look frail enough to break from even the smallest pressure. More importantly, are you sure you're not hurt?

Emil nodded in response to William's questions. His body ached but he was okay, nothing broken, nothing serious. He was sure of that much. All that talking about breaking arms was making him nervous though, not to mention Spirit's gritted teeth. Violence made violence after all.

"I'm okay, I'm okay..." He mumbled, though wincing every now and then as pressure was put on a sore spot. "Just a bit bruised, I'm going to be okay."

With that said, Emil turned back towards his assailant. He hesitated for a moment before speaking up. He didn't want to get on William's bad side, but he also had to get this said. He couldn't just remain silent this time.

"You didn't have to be that harsh, though." He quickly added "I mean, I'm grateful, but breaking arms and kicking sides isn't going to solve anything."

He fell silent, looking away. This was honestly the most he had spoken up to someone and the fact was making his legs shake. He did however manage to push out three more words in a low tone. "Violence beckons violence..."

William sighed, looking at the boy with confusion in his eyes. You're too soft for ya own good, kid. he said, waving his hand in the air for Spirit to step away, the boy who was quivering on the floor looking at Emil with wide, terrified eyes, before he took off into the other hallway.

Still, he should be scared enough now not to attack you again. William reasoned, looking after him, before turning to Emil. Violence might beckon violence, kid, but you still gotta defend yourself. And if you scare them good enough the first time, they're not very likely to come back for the second.

Spirit growled, agreeing.

Emil bit his lip in thought. That boy had looked absolutely terrified. William might say that was a good thing and he understood the logic behind it, but it was not right. Sure, he wasn't going to pick on Emil anymore and he was grateful for that, but problems like these weren't supposed to be solved through fisticuffs. That guy probably had some kind of reason to why he was so aggressive and fighting him wasn't going to solve that.

Emil didn't really know how to properly formulate this to William, however. But he was going to try.

"But... Isn't the fact that you had to use violence for that kind of thing a problem in itself? I mean, if we could just have ended the fight and talk to the guy we could have solved the problem without anyone getting hurt."

Emil was still clearly hesitating. He didn't like arguing at all, but this was something he was really insistent on and he was going to stand for it, if now he could explain his thoughts properly.

"I don't know, the fact that we have to hurt people to make them stop hurting people just feels...Wrong."

He hadn't been able to formulate himself now either but it was the best he could do.

William looked at him in silence for a moment more before he spoke. Like I said, you're good kid, kid. he said, shaking his head. However, the world just doesn't work that way, not for anybody, and especially not for us. He looked at Emil, his eyes as cold as steel and just as strong. And with your power, you'll have to fight day and night for people to stop hurting you. I just don't know how you will be able to do it, being the nice kid you are. He sighed, running his fingers through his hair, and then looking to the side, towards Warrior and his swords, and Spirit's teeth and claws. He had his weapons against the world, but this kid... He hoped Emil wouldn't be hung up on what's 'right' forever.

Come on. he said, waving his hand. You don't have to think about it for now. I'll take ya to the classroom. What do you have next?

Emil was still looking at the floor, at a loss for words. No. The world didn't have to work like that. In this civilized day and age, it shouldn't work like that for anyone. Someone had to do something about it in that case and if Emil ever got the ability to change it all he would. But as is now, he was going to continue with his education and contribute to his ideals by sticking to his nonviolence ideals.

Finally, he looked up at William to reply. His newfound roommate had protected him and was proving himself a kind, if unruly soul. He's a good person and Emil had decided to stick around with him. A new friend, right? After a moment of thinking, he replied "I got English right now." With a hint of panic in his voice, he added "I'll probably be late now."

The fact had not hit him before now. Here he was trying to appease and he ended up late on his first day.
