Kal met up with Havoc to ask about, well, everything. How did one go about winning an election without playing into popularity? Havoc didn't seem the popular type. He didn't play nice in the way charismatic people did.

God. He made her nervous, though. Kealani was nervous about everything lately. This was completely new for her. When she walked up to Havoc and called out to him gently.

"H-Havoc? You were... last years president, right? I have a few questions if you don't mind."

Havoc was definitely not the popular type. He'd managed to win not one but two elections simply by having a good platform and avoiding as many stereotypes as possible. He'd certainly been helped by the fact that his predecessors were buried in scandals, and having a well behaved guy who wasn't going to go out and murder someone was no doubt a boon for him.

He'd made a point of making himself available around the time of the election, lingering in the scouting office and trying to make himself look more approachable.

It wasn't working. Havoc couldn't really do approachable, but at least one person was willing to push past that initial anxiety to approach him.

A young girl, with purple skin and clearly non-human, spiderlike features. Her age was up in the air, as was almost anything about her, and Havoc didn't recognize her in the slightest. The fact that she launched right into a question, however, was ideal - quick and easy, giving him something to work with.

"Yes," Havoc said. "I was student council president in the first term, and I stepped down to vice president in the second. Until this election is over, I'll remain vice president."

Kal leaned one way on her feet and cleared her throat. She liked not having to go through the niceties as her stomach burned with questions.

"Well, you're not very approachable, or emotionally there, so I was wondering how you managed to win the elections? I'm not great with popularity, but I do have ideas. I don't want to be council president or even vice president, but I guess I'm struggling with the idea of making a speech, or more than one when I'm not great at public speaking."

As was indicated by her verbal onslaughter.

She was blunt, and most people probably would have been horrified, but Havoc was instead pleasantly surprised. He was used to people dancing around his issues (issues's he'd more or less always embraced), so not having to was refreshing.

"People say they want emotional involvement," Havoc said, "but truthfully, it gets in the way. Emotions aren't needed for this. What you need is a single platform. Don't focus on more than one issue. Make that issue your only focus, and make it represent you."

He paused for a moment, then gave a small nod, his point apparently conveyed.

"During my election, most likely only knew me as the candidate supporting self defense."

"And if I'm working with someone, more or less, what if we have the same platform? I don't want to step on Alma's shoes. I guess my thing could be upholding Starlight's self-image. With all the past transgressions during elections, things have seemed downhill."

And Kal was thinking to herself, writing down Havoc's answer. It was a good idea. One she hadn't thought of. She kicked herself a little for that, but it was fine. It was still early in the elections.

Havoc had worked with someone, but they'd been his second (at least in his mind). He considered the question more carefully. That was why he was there, after all--he'd chosen to make himself available so that he could be more familiar with the candidates, but also so that he could help the transition a bit better.

"Choose your own thing, separate from theirs. Don't stand in their shadow, or you won't get anywhere. The ballot won't let you run as a shared vote, so people could vote for them but not you."

"Yeah, that's what I was thinking." Kal marked something off on her notepad and checked something else. "But I'm, uh, only running for auditor. I have no interest in presidency, so we're not really competing."

Auditor? Havoc considered that for a moment. He'd only ever been in the president seats, and had never really considered the spot at all.

"Why?" Havoc said simply. "Why choose to be auditor, rather than aiming for presidency?"

His own intentions when he'd run had been entirely selfish. Being student council president looked good on an application, so he'd gone out of his way to do so. The fact that it was good social practice was simply an extra bonus, not what he'd really intended.

"Because I'm good at organization and finances," Kal said without missing a beat. She had asked herself this very same question. If she was all about looking good on paper, why auditor. Why such a small part in everything.

"I know my strengths and my goal isn't to be in the spotlight. I want to make Starlight Academy better, and this position is the place I could do that best. I trust the others running, any of them, in the positions they want to gather. I know I can work with these people. I don't need to be the leader to be... good. To make thing happen."

Oh. So she was one of those. For the greater good, and all that. Havoc had never been one of those, and it was there that their opinions very much deviated.

"I did it for the advantage that it presented, so I can't relate." Once upon a time, Havoc would have kept his mouth shut, but on the island? People cared so much less. People were so used to totally alien physiologies, to cultures that were strange and unknown. The fact that Havoc was a totally ordinary human who was born and raised in California wasn't something most people would immediately think of, even when he confessed to being an inherently selfish person, doing things for his own ends.

"Someone at any level of the council would be able to help, though," Havoc did confirm. "Treasurer might be better if you are particularly good at finances."
