Why was it not working? He should have seen this coming. For a while now, Junchi had noticed weird things happening to him and around him. During his power classes, shape-shifting became increasingly difficult. He could no longer fully turn himself into petals, and every day, the parts of his body he could turn became smaller. Even a finger would be more progress than he was making in the past few days.

His magic must have been running out from overuse. He had been showing off a lot. Trying to impress people with his healing capabilities and his ability to create a swarm of petals circling around him. A break was what he needed. He had ventured to the park to maybe practice some more, but there were other things to do in the park than panicking about the possibility of you losing your magic. There were swings to swing on and slides to slide down. Even better, there seemed to be a decent amount of kids around to play with.

Still, as he hopped up onto the seat of a swing and positioned himself comfortably, a thought knawed at the back of his mind. The petals were not the only weird thing he noticed. For a few days now, he noticed flowers and grass becoming taller whenever Junchi was near. If he was correct about the seasons, spring was coming. That was probably normal. The only issue was, after a certain distance away, he would turn around and see them starting to limp weakly like the Earth was trying to pull them back in. Even now, the plant life below Junchi became weirdly tall, something he swore they were not like before he got near. Worrying must have been playing tricks on his mind. Right now, he wanted to swing.

The park had already become the place to be for Fuyu. The city scared her a bit, it was so full of people. Normally crowds didn't scare Fuyu but this island was weird and the crowd was full of weird looking people. Some of them even looked spooky. So Fuyu liked to be in the park where there were still a lot of people but there were also a lot of bushes and quiet corners where she could go hide away if necessary.

Fuyu didn't need to go hide away right now as she was wandering along the path. The people around looked fairly not-weird and Fuyu felt like he was back outside the island. Well, that didn't make her feel that much better. Fuyu didn't like the kids in the outside world. But she had noticed that the kids on this island were, could she dare to say it, pretty nice? Fuyu was flabbergasted(she had learned that word recently) that she hadn't been bullied. In fact, she seemed more like a bully for her distrust against other kids. It annoyed her some, since she had a good reason for her distrust. And then it annoyed her that she couldn't make the appropriate expression for her annoynment. Annoyedness? Whatever! The point was, her face was stupid!

Fuyu kicked a rock and felt so frustrated tears almost formed. But she drew them back since they burned with their heat. Why couldn't the kids on this island just me mean? Then Fuyu would have a reason for being rude and she wouldn't seem mean. Fuyu wasn't a mean person. Or at least she didn't think so. Fuyu kicked another rock and watched as it rolled to the side of the trail. Right next to a playground.

Automatically Fuyu wanted to go away, away from other kids, but Fuyu noticed the playground was nearly empty. There was one weirdly coloured kid with funky feet on the swings. And the grass and weeds below the swing they were sitting on were growing as Fuyu watched. It was a weird sight even on this island, watching plants stretch so fast you could see it. Well, Fuyu bet it looked just as strange when she made snow animals that started to move, or when she laughed with a blank face.

Fuyu, intrigued by this weird sight, stepped off of the trail and made her way to the swings. She stopped some ways from the kid and cleared her throat, pointing at the plants below them, even larger now.
"Are you doing that? Well, I guess obviously you are, since I can't see anything or anyone else doing it. What are you? How can you do that?"

It looked like Junchi did not need to make the first move this time. That was a rarity for most of his encounters. He was almost always the one who initiated conversation, like a true leader. But a true leader also had the charismatic aura to bring people in, so in that way, being approached was a compliment.

This was not an unfamiliar face either. Junchi remembered this girl. The pale child with an unchanging blank expression from the community center. From his initial meeting with her, he would have figured she disliked him, but his appearance was unique compared to others here and there was no way she could mistake him as she approached. Was she blind? Or was she like Rei, who often acted like he hated people who he actually enjoyed.

Whatever it was, Junchi still made a slight grimace at Fuyu's question. So his mind was not playing any sort of tricks. Of course, it was an obvious sight to notice. He laughed his discomfort off as he swung himself a few more times before hopping off with a heavy, but perfect, landing. Then he turned towards Fuyu, still considering her questions.

"I don't know," was the best he could come up with. His voice was louder than most voices, but not enough to constitute was yelling. He spoke with a cheery and confident tone that made him seem both friendly and somewhat arrogant.

He looked down at the greenery beneath him. They really were tall. Not too much taller than before, but a few inches so. At least they stopped at a few inches taller. There would have been an actual probably if they never stopped growing.

With his eyes raised back up to Fuyu, he continued his response, "I couldn't do that stuff before. I'm an Earth oricenta, or... um... an Earth elemental!"

When Fuyu heard the kid's voice she remembered him, kinda. She remembered seeing him once before at the community center. But like with most kids she had mostly ignored him and he had left pretty soon anyway. Fuyu figured she should've remembered the kid just for his strange looks but Fuyu herself couldn't figure out how her memory worked. Fuyu kinda remembered having a conversation with him. About skipping grades or something?

Somehow the tone in this kid's voice annoyed Fuyu. Not because he was a kid in general, because his voice reminded Fuyu of her own voice. It was a bit loud, cheery and demanded attention. But this kid could make faces. The frustration from earlier lifted it's head and Fuyu lightly crossed her arms, hoping she could frown or glare at the kid. But no, she could only blankly stare.

Fuyu tilted her head when the kid answered her. He didn't know? Fuyu had known from the moment she was born what she was and what she could do. But she bet there were a lot of people here who had no idea what they could do. After all, this place was weird.
"Don't you have adults you can ask? It looks a pretty big things to be ignored."
Fuyu said and pointed at the plants. They were getting ridiculously big.

Oricenta? Earth...elemental? Fuyu tilted her head, she had no idea what those were. She went to power classes and had been taught about other species but mostly the basic ones, like shifters and vampires and stuff. Nothing about elementals yet. And of course she knew about her own yuki warashi species.
"I don't know what that is. Why can you do it now? Are you leveling up or something? Like in a game."

What was that cross of the arms supposed to mean? It was hard to tell with that blank face of hers. No matter, if she was not enjoying her time with him, it was not like he was forcing her to stay. He approached her some, preferring to be close to the people he was conversing with. Looking her over, if her facial expressions were going to be difficult to analyze, then he would need to focus on her body movements. That seemed simple enough for a hunter like himself.

He glanced back down at the plants growing beneath him, then made an unsure shrug. "I can ask my dads... or my power teacher, but I want to do this by myself! I can't ask the adults to help me with everything." He crossed his arms the same way Fuyu did, giving both a confident, but defiant look back. "I'm almost seven. I can do it."

Which was why he came to the park alone. The less his dads knew about the changes, the better. Then, once he got everything under control, he could show off his new powers. Him overcoming the change in his powers would be a great example of why he could take care of a pet.

A head tilt. Something confused Fuyu. That was both a good and bad thing to Junchi. Teaching a big kid about himself and his powers was fun. Just talking to a big kid excited him. It was proof of his maturity.

"Um... the elements... Air, Earth, Fire, Water. I can control plants! Well... um..." he uncrossed his arms, breaking eye contact for a split second before looking back at Fuyu, "I used to be able to turn into flower petals... I can't anymore... So it's not really leveling up... but I can still make petals move though!" And at that moment, Junchi pulled petals off of some nearby flowers to swirl around Fuyu like a hula hoop.

Fuyu fought back the want to step away when the kid came closer and looked her over. It made her uncomfortable but fortunately it wouldn't show on Fuyu's face. And she moves her hands to her hips, trying to show that she wouldn't back down.
When the kid talked Fuyu wanted to facepalm.
"Kids are supposed to ask adults for help. It's the adults' job. I'm almost 11 and I ask for help. When you turn 13 or 14 then you can try to do everything yourself. But I think you shouldn't try to do something this serious by yourself. You're only seven."
Fuyu remembered the kid saying he could skip a bunch of grades, but even if you were smart it didn't mean you had good judgement. Fuyu had seen many adults make really stupid decisions and they were all smarter than Fuyu or this kid.

Fuyu listened the kid explain her about elementals, or try to. Fuyu wasn'tsure if he was doing that good of a job. But when he made some flower petals swirl around Fuyu she giggled with a blank face and touched the petals a bit.
"This is pretty! And really neat."
Fuyu looked at the kid and tilted her head.
"Even if you can't turn into flower petals anymore doesn't mean you're not leveling up. Sometimes you gotta collect enough power and then sacrifice it to gain a new, even more powerful power. You just sacrificed your petal trick so you could do that."
Fuyu gestured to the big plants, still growing a little.

This kid was bossy. Despite Junchi wearing a friendly expression, an annoyed sigh could be heard exiting for a second. "Why thirteen or fourteen? I'm not a adult until... um... twenty-four. That's soooo looong," he whined, almost stomping his talon in frustration. Instead, he dropped his shoulders and lowered his head for a few seconds.

Seeing Fuyu become impressed by his petals returned his mood back to its cheery state. Impressing people was the distraction he needed. It was fun. So fun that he had not realized that the plants began growing again until it was pointed out to him. So much for that distraction. Did the growing not stop earlier? Why was it continuing now? Now it stopped again. Must have been because he noticed the change. If his new power worked by him not noticing them, he would do anything to get his old power back.

The petals moved away from Fuyu in a line to rest themselves in Junchi's hair as decorations. "I don't know. My dads said my magic will be weird until I'm all grown up. They didn't say I'd lose it though. But... Dad can grow all sorts of plants... Maybe that's why..."

Was his magic changing to be more consistent with his dads? He knew his aunt on Henghai's side could turn into a tree-person, and Henghai could give plants bodies. Junchi just assumed most of his powers came from Henghai's side, and the petal control came from Anrong being able to control plants. But now it seemed like his powers were moving more towards Anrong side. Why did this all have to be confusing? What was he losing his shape-shifting powers for? To make plants grow giant, then watch them die when he gets too far away?

Fuyu smothered a chuckle when the kid got a whiny note on his voice. He wasn't as mature as he thought, obviously. Well, he was only seven, even if he was super smart.
"Patience is also one sign of maturity, isn't it?"
Fuyu said, sounding just a bit smug. She knew this kid's kind, they liked showing off and proving they were oh, so mature. His kind were the ones that always bullied her. But Fuyu had a feeling this kid wouldn't bully her, not without a good reason.

Fuyu shrugged at the kid's words, she didn't know any better.
"It sounds realistic that it'd take your powers a long time to become stable. It's like that with many things. But if you knew your magic was gonna be all weird until you're an adult then why is this so weird to you? If your dad has the same kinda thing too."
Fuyu felt a little bad after talking about dad, since she had never had one. But if she felt bad it didn't show on her face. It was blank, like always.

Fuyu wanted to somehow reassure the kid, since he really seemed to be troubled.
"I mean, they said to me too that my powers might get weirder when I get older. Since I'm a 'unique case in my species' or something. That's what they said to me."
Fuyu shrugged and glanced at her feet. It felt weird talking about herself with other kids. She really hoped this kid wouldn't laugh at her or anything. That would be awful.

Now Fuyu resorted to talking down to him. It was hard to blame her. As the older child, Junchi was supposed to be respecting her, not whining. He needed to work on that. That must have been why his powers were changing. To encourage him to be more patient and learn how to handle a tough situation. His cheeks turned an unnatural hot pink at this realization. It was hard to tell if he was blushing from the excitement of this discovery, or from the embarrassment of how foolish he was being towards Fuyu.

"Yeah, you're right... but my dads are teaching me how to be a patient! You gotta be to be a good hunter. I think that's why my magic's being weird. To make me more patient. I just... I just thought my magic would keep getting stronger... not change so much." And so fast too.

He sighed, but hope could be heard in there. This discussion with Fuyu was getting him somewhere. The answer was close. He knew it! He just had to be patient and wait, but also work harder on his training.

"And I think that's really cool! I'd be really confused if I was a "unique case." You must be... uh... really smart and independent!"

Fuyu watched how the kid blushed really pink, it looked a little funny. Fuyu could blush too, actually her cheeks were always a little red, but she had never seen such an interesting shade to blush into. Fuyu wanted to poke at the kid's cheeks but that would've surely been too much. So instead she just stared and fiddled with her hands. Why was the kid blushing anyway? Had Fuyu's words embarrassed him that much?

Fuyu tilted her head, intrigued by the kid's words.
"You hunt? Why do you hunt? What do you hunt? Do all oricenta hunt?"
Fuyu bombed the kid with questions and acknowledged the rest of his words a tad later.
"And is magic really that deep? Does it actually have a meaning, or a purpose? Why should magic teach you something? My magic won't teach me anything. I just freeze things."

When the kid called Fuyu smart and independent she first blushed a bit and then she just laughed. She must've looked weird, doing it all with a blank face.
"I'm not. I'm still really childish. I can't even reach the fruit bowl on the counter 'cos I'm so short, and I get cranky. I should be bigger now but I'm still small inside and outside. You and me seem to be on the same level. Or maybe you're even smarter than me, since you can skip classes and all."
Fuyu got more and more depressed as she spoke and it was discernible from her slumping shoulders and moping voice.
