Name: Melanie Ki'logh'n Gorgyss. Often called Mel.
Age: 11
Birthday: April 3rd
Gender: Cis Female
Category: Student
Class: Middle School
Grade: 5th Grade
Appearance Description: Standing at an even 5'0, wearing perfectly circular glasses, Melanie thoroughly looks the part of a shy bookworm. Her aesthetic is 'big patterned sweaters', and is always seen wearing a big over-sized sweater. Except in the hot summer months, where she wears large T-shirts instead. Where do all these over-sized clothing items coming from no one really knows.
Her most defining feature is probably her hair, which starts white at the top of her head and turns black at the bottom, with streaks of black and white patterned throughout. Her father tried to help her be herself, but his lack of real understanding of how hair works just left her with a plain haircut. He eyes are an auburn color, straddling the cusp between a normal brown color and a strange red.
Looking at her gives a slight sense of unease. It's inexplainable and generally there's nothing about her that should feel out of the ordinary--her parents made sure of that--but yet, somehow, looking at her gives the feeling of something being horribly yet inexplicably wrong, like looking at robot that's fallen helplessly into the uncanny valley.
How strange.
Personality Description: Melanie can be easily and accurately described as a bookworm. She loves to sit on the couch with a book bigger than her on her lap and read it for hours and hours. Not even bed time or a boring story could stop her from finishing a book, if only to rant about how bad it is. Every book is a challenge and she's always ready to read.
She was left to her own devices and allowed to explore whatever topic suited her at the time, so Mel is more mature than her age would betray. Her mother was especially forthcoming with information--describing fears and nightmares in lavish detail. Because of this, Melanie knows things she probably shouldn't know, and her problem solving/decision making skills are the best in her class.
One night while channel hopping, she found a crime show and was immediately taken in. She used these shows to buff up her deductive reasoning and detective skills.
Melanie is very easily excited and very interested in dark magic and occult rituals.... Probably something she inherited from her mother. Her father doesn't seem to like it, but he accepts that this is just part of the person she is becoming. Children are so mysterious, especially half extra-dimensional children.
Powers:
Half Nightmare: Her mom is a nightmare, leaving her with some of the traits of a nightmare. For example, part of her is not really supposed to be there. So while looking at her doesn't cause any horrible problems, and she looks like it makes sense for her to be there, looking at her imparts the sense of underlying wrongness, like she should be on a completely different plane of existence.
Mel is also immortal, with enhanced senses, strength, and durability due to her nightmare genes. She gives off a bizarre aura, and seems to prefer working and reading in the dark with as little light as possible. Its probably why she has bad eyesight.
Minor Fear Inducing: She can somewhat influence and induce fear in the heads of others. Usually this manifests as a low key anxiety about something strange that bugs them for the rest of the day. When they go to bed they'll likely have a spooky dream, but wake up the next day wondering what they were ever even worried about.
Witchery: Trained by her father, a warlock, Mel can mix basic witch brews that have an effectiveness of about ten minutes. Very generic things like being invisible and putting someone to sleep is about all she can do.
Biography:
Melanie was born in the tenuous in-between realm to a nightmare and a warlock. Her father was very surprised when he learned of her existence. Her mother wished to keep her in the nightmare realm and teach her everything about the shadowy planes, while her father wanted her to stay in the mortal realm. He argued that they didn't know how well she would be able to live in the nightmare world, and that the mortal realm was more hospitable. It would be safer, therefore, for her to grow up in Manta Carlos, learning about nightmares slowly.
Her mother seemed to agree, and with much hesitation, allowed her to be raised by her father. Her mother sends her messages in her dreams often, telling her things about the other realm that she belongs in. The vivid dreams made her desire to see the other realm.
In due time, her father told her. All in good time.
