Lei wasn't exactly the most popular kid in class. He always made sure to have high standards for himself — he got impeccable grades through no small amount of effort — but he imposed the same standards on everyone he encountered. Slouches and idiots weren't safe from his wrath. In his freshman High School science project, he tore his partner a new one for even suggesting that they settle with a paper mache volcano. If he was going to settle for anything less than perfect, he had better be paralyzed for ten years and unable to consume solid foods.
Presentations with him always ensured a near-perfect to perfect grade, but the promise of good grades and a bright future was never appealing enough to his peers to put up with his overwhelming personality. That was why, for this particular homework, he was stuck to the new person because the minute they suggested groupwork — no one even had the gall to make eye contact with him.
Lei was decidedly unhappy with this forced partnership between Kaya. She showed up for their meeting in the common room, but that was about the end of her helpfulness. She had been playing with shadows for half an hour while Lei had to hash through these math problems all by himself. The next time he was going to see an invisible number, he was going to punch it with his invisible fist.
He slammed his pencil passive-aggressively on the table. "Look, I don't know what you think 'school' is for, but sitting on your big, red bum while playing with shadow puppets? Save it for Halloween. Help me with this shit, unless it's too late and your big, fat horns already crushed the tiny brain in your skull. Then, my condolences."
