Sophia was more than a little relieved to step out onto the balcony. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply as she made the last couple steps to the railing. Laying her arms on it, she leaned forward and tilted her head up. Sweat dripped down her neck and cooled, and the beat of the music behind her pounded on and on.

She'd met some interesting people. Had done so despite the noise, and the crowd, and the effort of keeping up a good face throughout all of it. Maybe she'd do one or two more rounds to say goodbye to the friends that had come and then take off. The whole point of coming had been to be seen, after all. (That reasoning didn't feel hollow now, of course not.)

Thinking of the dance floor she'd just come from, Sophia ducked her head and blushed. That had certainly sweetened the deal.

She was glad to have come, she decided, smiling to herself. Very, very glad, indeed.

Her sweat now cold in the chill February air, she shivered. Reaching into her purse, she pulled out a remedy: a key chain of a tan cat with bright red stripes. Gripping it in her hand, she called on the magic waiting within it. She felt the warmth and exhilaration of the summon, the air around her was displaced, moving her skirt and stray strands of her hair, and then, standing beside her, was Thuya.

"I didn't think you'd come," said Thuya. His voice was deep and male, perhaps surprisingly so for someone who hadn't heard him before. Living flames leapt from his back, following the bobcat's striped and speckled pattern. Sparks flew from his feet as he walked closer, rubbing against Sophia's hip.

"Well, maybe you don't know me as well as you think you do," she said, petting him. The flames only tickled her skin.

Thuya purred, a chuckle. "Or perhaps you have hopes for something happening at a Valentines dance?"

Sophia gently pulled on one of his ears. :Real funny!: she told him mind-to-mind, not even risking having someone overhear her and her embarrassment. Her red face, at least, she could blame on the cold.

RE: dissolving at dawn [hara & sophia]

Hara rolled her shoulders back a few times, wandering around the room. It was almost surprising just how much she was enjoying herself tonight; she had met people she hadn't come across before. She thought it was fairly unsurprising, but it was - as could be said for the majority of Starlight Academy - a novelty to her. Growing up in a town of barely over three thousand people total, the size of Starlight Academy felt ridiculous by comparison.

The music blared in her ears, and while she didn't mind it, there was a little part of her that cringed at the ringing she knew would be in her ears tomorrow. She didn't like dancing, but coming off the dancefloor, it suddenly didn't seem so bad to her. Tonight turned out even better than expected, though she was at a loss as to where a certain someone had gone off to.

Facing the balcony, she saw her. Sophia was talking with something Hara could barely make out from the distance. I think I'll go over and maybe we can talk agai-oh. Oh. Wait. She's a summoner? Hara moved closer, trying to eavesdrop; the thumping music muffling the majority of the dialogue. She really was ceaselessly nosy.

"Well, maybe ... me as well ... do"

"Or ... hopes ... dance?"

Furrowing her brow, Hara wondered what they could be talking about. Did Sophia want to dance? With me? With that fire demon looking thing? What the hell?

Deciding actually doing something may in fact be the best course of action, she stood up straighter, and opened the door to the balcony.

"Well hey there, I guess this is where you went off to," she said, trying to sound flirty. God that was so bad, what even was that? She chided internally.

Thuya's ears twitched, and he turned away from Sophia, causing her to look up and to the door to the balcony. Music and heat poured out from behind Hara.

"Well hey there, I guess this is where you went off to," she said, seeming to be less at ease than her words were trying to project.

"Here I am," Sophia said, turning so that her back was to the railing. She reclined against it, resting her upper arms and elbows on it, and tilted her head.

Thuya made the equivalent of a mental snort and sent a quick image: Johnny Bravo.

:Hey!!: Sophia's blush grew even hotter, and she was even gladder for the chill air. She tried to play it cool, keeping most of her reaction to Thuya's interruption to herself.

"Did you need a bit of air yourself?" Sophia asked.

"Did you need a bit of air yourself?"

"Ah, not really? The noise was more of a pain than the heat," Hara replied, stepping onto the balcony. It really was a lot cooler here, though Hara couldn't be sure if she found it comfortable just yet. Despite the past five years, she had still yet to acclimatise to the chill of the northern hemisphere's winter. Clearing her throat, she added more confidently: "Getting to chat with you again is definitely a bonus".

Stepping closer to the railing, Hara felt the cold metal on her fingertips as she looked out at the night sky. Maybe if I look out there I won't stare at her so much, she thought, gently biting part of her lip. "Oh, look, you can see Ursa Major from here tonight," she said quietly, looking towards the stars and constellations with a cheerful smile. She turned around again to look at Sophia.

"So, I take it you summoned this... er?" She balked, not wanting to offend a sentient fire-based anything.

"Ah, not really?" Hara said, stepping out onto the balcony. "The noise was more of a pain than the heat." Then, to Sophia's surprise: "Getting to chat with you again is definitely a bonus."

"I'm not opposed to the company," Sophia said, trying to be warm and afraid she was coming off as cold as the February night.

At the mention of the stars, Sophia tipped her head back to look. It was a gorgeous, clear night. The type of night you could paint a picture of.

"Gosh," she breathed, captured by the sight. She returned to the moment just as Hara spoke again.

"So, I take it you summoned this... er?"

Sophia laughed. "His name's Thuya. For lack of a better description, I've been calling him a fire bobcat."

"Thuyavan," Thuya corrected, voice solemn. "And I am a Guardian of Lost Magical Texts."

:Now who's trying to impress girls?: Sophia teased, poking his flank with her foot. :Guardian of Lost Magical Texts, where do you get this stuff?:

"You can see statues of my kind at the steps of libraries," Thuya added, sitting and blinking up at Hara. "We are called the--" and here, Thuya made a noise that couldn't be comprehended by humans (Sophia greatly doubted that other cats could understand it). "Humans seem to translate this roughly as 'fire bobcat', however."

"His name's Thuya. For lack of a better description, I've been calling him a fire bobcat."

Hara felt herself blush slightly at the sound of Sophia's laugh, which rose from her stomach and chimed in Hara's head like small bells. Internally reminding herself to relax and act smooth, she looked away from Sophie and towards Thuya, hoping that if she needed to, she could blame the redness on his heat.

"Thuyavan," Thuya corrected, voice solemn. "And I am the Guardian of Lost Magical Texts."After a moment, he added: "You can see statues of my kind at the steps of libraries, we are called the-" Thuya made an ungodly sound, continuing, "Humans seem to translate this roughly as 'fire bobcat', however."

Hara nodded, impressed that Sophia would have the ability to summon a fire bobcat, and the Guardian of Lost Magical Texts at that. Hold on, she thought, saying in a light, teasing tone: "But, lost magical texts? How can you guard what's already lost? Doesn't that defeat the purpose a little bit?" She laughed, hoping to smother the sound of her curiosity at the discrepancy by presenting it as humor. "I mean, it'd probably make it easy work, at least!" She added.

Wait, actually, did Sophia just-

"Did you just poke a fire bobcat with your foot?" Hara asked suddenly, concerned. Wouldn't the fire burn her? How is she not literally on fire?

:Ohh, looks like she has you there!: thought Sophia, amused.

"An astute observation," Thuya agreed. "But not all lost things are truly lost. Some lost things are found, and the place in which they are found is Vanathos, the Realm of the Lost. My duty is to guard one of the libraries in that realm. As I said, I guard magical texts."

Sophia drew her eyebrows together. Wait a second. Was he actually--? Did this actually add up? How had she never known?

"And I can assure you, the job is not easy." Thuya twitched his ears and raised his head, trying to look important. "Vanathos is under constant assault from those who would steal or reclaim these lost objects."

Sophia folded her arms pinched her chin between thumb and forefinger. Had she really pulled a guardian from such an important task? Why hadn't he said something before? Unless he enjoyed the break... Or maybe wasn't very good at the task.

"Did you just poke a fire bobcat with your foot?" Hara asked suddenly.

Looking up, Sophia laughed nervously. "It looks much more concerning than it actually is, I promise. I've Bonded with Thuya, so his flames can't burn me unless I command them to." Putting up her hands, she amended: "I mean, if I was trying to cauterize a wound or something! I don't go asking him to burn me randomly, I'm not into that."

:Leave impressing the girls to me,: Thuya thought, cocking his head at Sophia in a convincing imitation of someone rolling their eyes.

:I guess I should, huh?: thought Sophia, embarrassed.

Thuya twitched his ears and raised his head, "Vanathos is under constant assault from those who would steal or reclaim these lost objects."

Hara opened her mouth, then closed it, biting her upper lip with her lower teeth and sucking in air from between her teeth. Suppressing the urge to ask how anyone would know about Vanathos if everything therein was lost, Hara nodded. With all due respect to Thuya, Hara wasn't entirely here for this. She faced Sophia, who laughed nervously before answering her question.

Fighting the urge to laugh, Hara exhaled quickly, loudly, and grinned, shoulders lifting slightly as she turned her head inwards, looking down. "I wasn't concerned about that, but I'll be sure to keep that in mind," she said in a higher voice than before, still grinning but regaining eye contact. Having sensed Sophia's embarrassment, to diffuse the tension she added: "But like I was saying before, the heat doesn't bother me".

Hoping that wasn't too forward, Hara turned back towards the door of the balcony, looking in on the crowd. The music had changed now; it was slower, and her ears didn't feel the pounding of techno music. Until tonight, she never knew she was a techno fan, but she found she was learning a lot about herself and other students tonight, anyhow. She didn't have to like dancing, as long as she was dancing with someone she liked as much as Sophia.

Control the gay, would you Hara? She thought to herself, keeping a neutral expression.

RE: dissolving at dawn [hara & sophia]

Receiving Hara's silence rather poorly, Thuya nudged his head against Sophia's hand. :I guess she wasn't much impressed by Vanathos.:

Forgetting herself, Sophia laughed and petted his head. :And now you're feeling sad? Don't worry, I was very impressed.:

"I wasn't concerned about that, but I'll be sure to keep that in mind," Hara said in response to Sophia's fire-kink outburst. "But like I was saying before, the heat doesn't bother me".

:Ohhhh,: Thuya thought. :Smooth.:

:Oh my god,: Sophia thought back. :That's not flirting, she's just being nice!:

Thuya shot her a mental impression filled with incredulity. It was very unimpressed, that mental impression. :Are you kidding?:

:Leave human interactions to humans,: Sophia countered.

:Ah, yes, you're a paragon of good communication. That's why you've left her in silence while communicating with me?:

"Uhh..." Sophia said. It took her moment to realise she'd said so outloud. "Um." She put her hand in front of her mouth. Shit. Oh, god. Thuya was right! She'd completely left Hara out of the entire interaction! Well, it wasn't like she could have brought Hara into a conversation about flirting, anyway, and especially not mind-to-mind.

Shit. She was still doing it. This was so embarrassing. What did she even say?

"I'm so sorry."

RE: dissolving at dawn [hara & sophia]

"Uhh... um. I'm so sorry."

Hara opened her mouth to reply, but closed it again. She looked from Thuya, to Sophia, to Thuya, and back again, brow furrowed. She was concerned, really; she was wondering if she had gone too far, or had somehow offended Sophia. It took a moment before she realised this wouldn't make sense, and another before she began to piece together why Sophia was acting so strangely.

Biting her lip slightly, she contributed to the silence, pensive. It's times like this I wish I had stronger telepathic abilities, she thought, frustrated. You know what? Fuck it. Why the fuck not? It's Valentine's Day, isn't it?

Slowly moving forward, Hara closed the gap between the two of them. This close, she could see where Sophia's naturally black hair ended and the dyed green began, could see the little patterns on the lace top, could see the way the night sky lit up her deep, blue eyes. This close, she could smell a sweet scent; whether it was perfume, or just Sophia, Hara didn't know, or care to.

Cupping Sophia's face in her hands, she felt Sophia's soft, warm skin beneath her cool fingertips. Tilting her head slightly, she kissed her.
