He didn't particularly like the beach. It wasn't because of the sand, because he'd grown up surrounded on all sides by sand and rock. It wasn't because of the heat, because he'd grown accustomed to long hot summers growing up in China. He couldn't even really say it was because of the crawlies that scuttled along the beach, since, hell, for the most part, if he left them alone then they didn't really bother him at all.

No, he hated the beach because of the salt water.

Most of the water he'd swum in was freshwater, so he had no problem opening his eyes underwater to navigate through hoards of nervous fish, and it wasn't really a problem if he accidentally swallowed a mouthful of it, since Turpan was a pretty small city and the polution there wasn't too bad.

But oceans were salty. The only people who could open their eyes in the ocean's salty sprays were totally loony and accidentally gulping down saltwater was cause enough to go to the hospital half the time.

Despite his reservations about saltwater, he'd bought goggles and put on his swim trunks and make his way to the beach. Goggles in hand, he stared at the waves with clear distain before walking slowly into the cool surf.
