[ Adeloise Wagner ]
+ [ Stella ] + [ Adrien ]

Adrien and Stella both agree that this was one hell of a stupid idea. And that was saying something.

Adeloise was too busy looking around bushes and burrows to listen to either of them though. She heard whispers as soon as she set foot on this island (the human sort of whispers of course) that there were wandering spirits everywhere. She'd felt it as soon as she was at the docks. There was no doubt the island was brimming with energies she never felt back at home. They were everywhere and Adeloise wanted to talk to all of them--find out what their deal was.

For once Adrien had a really serious air on him and verbally expressed his worry about her quest. It'll be perfectly fine! she said to him but all she got back was a really unsure look that was normally only on Stella. Adeloise had the gall to joke about them looking like siblings but Stella rolled her eyes at this, saying she was sure she'd never had a brother as obnoxious as Adrien.

Adeloise is sure she had a pretty decent excuse to say when people find her here: she'd say she wanted to familiarize herself with the land and what better than through the locals? Stella had to disagree, and Adrien had to be the one to point out that wandering spirits in a dark, heavily wooded area can't exactly be the locals she's supposed to be acquainted with. Adeloise pretended she didn't hear a thing.

"Hello~?" she called out, "Anybody in here?"

"Adeloise, come on. You of all people know there's something in here. Let's get back to the dorms already. You still have to check with the school about your residency and guardianship or whatever," Stella pleaded, floating in front of the girl in attempt to sway her. It didn't work and Adeloise just walked through. For a ghost, she looked more concerned than the girl who could get easily possessed by a roaming spirit. Adrien seemed to be calmer but he was pretty quiet

"It'll be fine, Adeloise hummed, stretching out the 'i'. "We'll be back there before sunset--no one's gonna notice we're late! Let's go, let's go!"

Alexander happened to be walking around nearby, though not close enough for him to hear Adeloise's voice. He couldn't pick up her scent either, due to the dirction of today's wind. He was wandering around aimlessly like he usually did while in, what he considered, his territory. He needed to do this frequently enough to remind the wildlife of his precense. What he did not know, however, was that his precense also affected the animal spirits in his surroundings. Some spirits would follow him around, usually deer or hare spirits from his more recent preys (likely because they could not yet wander far from their bodies)— but occasionally other carnivourous spirits would wander with him. In either way ((I'm leaving the spirits up to you)), natural spirits near Adeloise would soon be reacting as if a human and an apex predator was moving around nearby.

At first there were quiet murmurs--nothing unnatural to someone like Adeloise. She always hear murmurs, soft laughter, ghostly wails but those were typically consistent things. But the whispers growing somewhat agitated was not a normal thing to happen. Something was happening. Or rather.. something was arriving,

"I don't like this feeling," echoed Stella's shaky voice. No other human could have heard her anyone. "Adeloise, I really think we should go back." The panic in Stella's voice grew, along with the voices around them.

There was no sound coming from Adrien, which Adeloise assumed to be his indifference but there was a wary look in his eyes. Watching carefully--vigilant to whatever was rousing his fellow spirits.

Suddenly there was silence.

Nothing but the natural sound of nature. No whispers, no nothing. But all three knew there was more than just nothing. "Is... is anyone there?" Adeloise called again.

There was a minute or so of continued silence, but then a man became visible as he walked calmly towards the girl. He raised an eyebrow slightly when he laid eyes on her. His hands were in his pockets, and in his teeth was a bone that he was gnawing on. He was far from intimidating, if anything he looked hungover. "Hey there" he said. He looked around briefly, seemingly not noticing any spirits at all, and then he sniffed. "Are you lost?" he added, as he leaned against the closest tree.

There was.... a.. person?

One thing Adeloise hated about her power is that she couldn't tell people from ghosts until she tried grabbing at them. But she could tell by the lengthened groan she was hearing from Stella that she shouldn't try it. Then again, Stella wasn't her mom. Besiiiiides, he seems nice! No, he doesn't!! she could have heard Stella shriek if she was paying attention.

Adeloise flashed him a bright smile, "Guten Tag mien herr!" she chirped in her native tongue. He seemed to be observing their surroundings for a moment, but Adeloise waited for him to speak first.

She stood a little straighter, tucking her hands behind her back politely. "I'm not lost. I was just looking around," she explained, saying it like she was just off for a walk in the park. "I'm new here and I thought it would be nice to be acquainted with the island. Are you from around here?"

Another European? And from the very country Alexander himself had last been in before arriving to the islands. Interesting coincidence. Sadly, he didn't know much German, so he continued in English. "No... I'm from Europe. Name's Alexander Järn, by the way. I live out here now." He gestured deeper into the woods with his thumb. "No offense, but I don't think it's wise for a young girl like yourself to wander 'round out here alone. Where are your guardians?"

While talking, he had approached a little bit and had tossed his bone behind some bush. He had a faint smell of smoke about him from when he earlier that morning had roasted a whole deer. He stayed well outside of her personal space, though.

Adeloise gave a drawn out hum, thoughtfully considring his words. He lived out here? She wonders why would someone prefer living in the woods when the city was like... right there? Then again, she'd heard Stella complain about city life a lot so maybe he dislikes urban places.

"Mine's Adeloise! Adeloise Wagner," she introduced, dropping the stranger a curtsy as she had always done when meeting new people. "Um... I haven't really met up with them yet--my school guardian I mean," she said honestly. In terms of a guardian that's living and breathing, she hasn't met them. She'd forgotten but they gave her a name. It was probably in a paper in her school bag.

Alexander approached her. "Though I do have my sort of guardians right here!" Adeloise gestured to the ghosts behind her, towards Stella and Adrien, the former looking unimpressed, the latter looking like he was trying not to laugh. Adeloise didn't see though, she was looking at Alexander's reaction to even notice.

Alex grinned when Adeloise explained. He, too, had left civilization behind and went straight to the woods when he arrived about a year ago. Exploring forests was an adventure he could never get enough of.

When the girl gestured to her companions, Alex looked but saw nothing. Disbelief was in his face for an instant, but then he regained his rather tired expression. He sniffed a couple of times in the ghosts' direction, but didn't quite sense anything. "Are they ghosts?" came his conclusion. He stepped towards the appointed direction. Guessing their position, he spoke to them (he looked almost straight at both of them) "A lot of dangerous people seem to enjoy sneaking around in these woods. She's lucky I wasn't that one wendigo, or worse." Something about his posture or tone changed in that one moment. Had there been any animals nearby, they had probably fled.

Adeloise saw that look. Part of her of course felt the annoyance, she even began to anticipate he'd laugh, or get angry at her, but she managed to stomp it all down when he became more contemplative. Are they ghosts? he asked her, and she replied with a giddy smile. "Yes, they are!" she proclaimed proudly. She was really glad he didn't say 'imaginary friends'.

She turned to look towards her companions, her smile turning a little more smug. Stella looked at Alex with disbelief, while Adrien seemed to have a more approving look to him. "See, Stella, I knew he was gonna be nice!" Stella didn't share the sentiment and still looked on at her direction with a frown until Alex stood in front of her.

She's lucky I wasn't that one wendigo or worse.

Adeloise seemed to miss something and her face contorted to something thoughtful, but her ghost companions certainly caught it. If they had any blood flowing in them at all, one could have said their faces were drained out of it. "A wendigo?" Adeloise echoed, the word sounding alien to her. "What's that?"

Alexander turned from the ghosts and crouched to get closer to Adeloise's eye-level. "A monster. A man-eater. Creatures who were once people, but are now empty shells with only their endless hunger to drive them." Alexander had indeed met one, and more impressive still-- he had lived. The encounter had touched something deep inside of him, and he was a changed man now. "I had never heard of them before I came here. I never believed in monsters... or ghosts. But this island really opens your eyes." He grinned. "I'd really recommend you to stay on school grounds until you've learned more about the dangers of this island, and how to protect yourself from them-- ghost guardians or not."
