"Felen is my, well, put simply, he is my personal security," Zora said somewhat sheepishly. She knew that that sounded a bit pretentious, but since Woodland, and the last blackmail attempt, she just felt safer. Having magic meant nothing when they could jump you from behind, or their magic was stronger than yours.

"I hired him shortly after Broen left to find himself," she told him as she accepted the plate of food.

Ahh. After the explanation he seemed to relax a smidge, taking another bite of the food.

"That makes sense," he said. "Even with my background, I still had a security team when I was working in politics." Which was kind of silly. He'd been more than able to handle himself.

"Even if you're trained," he said, "there are still things you can't prepare for, I guess. Even here."

"Especially here," Zoraida said in total agreement as she took a small bite of her food."There are too many eventualities to consider, too many beings, people who have these amazing, yet crazy abilities..." she explained as she cut a piece of meat into smaller pieces.

"When I first moved here it was actually a culture shock of sorts, I was not used to walking among demons, ghosts or werewolves, and the realization that there really are people from other dimensions," here she looked at Frederick, "was almost mind-blowing."

"Gods and demons, walking side by side," Frederick mused. "We had aliens--at the very least the Alexandrian--and we had wizards. But we didn't have anything like this." Did people even know about the Alexandrian?

"I have to say I'm still in the culture shock phase. Sometimes I catch myself staring and have to remind myself that it's normal here. Not so much at how things look, but instead at what things are. We had a lot of unusual looking people in Halcyon, including those who might have been mistaken for demons. Horns, wings, all that."

"The Alexandrian? Who, or what is that?" Zora asked, looking up from her food and at Frederick questioningly. The name rang a bell, sort of. She wasn't sure if Broen or Angelo had mentioned them, or if one of the other Halcyonites had commented on it to her in passing. Either way, she was pretty sure she didn't know too much them.

He wasn't surprised to hear she knew so little of Halcyon City that she didn't even know the Alexandrian. No, not surprised at all.

"Who," he said in between bites. "The Alexandrian was the strongest hero Halcyon had to offer. They were an alien, a being of unimaginable power. They mostly kept to themselves, but watched over the other people of their kind. They weren't as strong. There was some kind of.. inheritance mechanic. There would always be one Alexandrian, effectively. Someone else would take up the mantle."

He didn't feel at all bothered to admit that the Alexandrian was stronger than him. There was no contest.

"As far as we know, the Alexandrian and his kind were the only aliens on our Earth. They'd fled to us. Refugees."

Despite feeling quite hungry - she hadn't eaten since early that morning - Zoraida picked a little at her food as she listened attentively to Frederick talk about the Alexandrian. There was so much that Broen had not told her, and now she truly did not know how she felt about that. He had left her in the dark about so many things, things that were kind of important, and that she would have loved to have known about.

"Do you think this Alexandrian person or any of his people possibly came through the portal with the others?" she asked, now wondering if perhaps more than just Halcyonites had come to the island.

"Doubtful," Frederick said. Zora might have been picking at her food, but Frederick had no issue. He was hungry, and he was going to eat. "The Alexandrian died fighting the monsters that ate our world. I think when he died, the line ended with him. If any of his people came over, I wasn't made aware of it, but they were few and far between."

Of course, there was technically no reason he would be made aware of it right then, but he might have before he'd even come over.

"He was one of the ones who sacrificed themselves in the end."

"That was extremely noble of him. Putting his life on the line like that," Zoraida replied somewhat distracted as she took a small forkful of rice.

Something about the last comment Frederick had made, niggled at Zoraida and bothered her. Trying to remember what it was, she suddenly realised, and with a start, that Broen had been there. He had copied the Alexandrian's powers, and that he too had been willing to sacrifice himself. The starkness of this remembered conversation caused her to go pale, and in a very odd way, a sense of pride mixed with the ache of realization and loss tore at her again.

Glancing with uncertainty at Frederick, Zora honestly did not know what to say or do. She was sure that he had no idea what his son had done. And she knew that Broen had been proud of what he had done, almost arrogantly so.

"Do you happen to know who else sacrificed themselves?" she asked carefully, giving herself a moment and just wanting to make sure that Frederick did not, in fact, know his son had helped before she said something.

"It was what he was made for, to my understanding," he said with a shrug. "He was... almost not a person. A concept given form. A shield for his people. I only met him a few times, but from what I learned he didn't have much of an individual self anymore."

Her question caught him a bit off guard, but he guessed it wasn't that odd. She wanted to know more about Halcyon, after all.

"A lot of people," he said. "Edmund Eldritch, for one. He was our master mage. Rictor, who was one of the most prominent west coast heroes. He was bonded with one of the Gultha, and while he tried to fight it off, it eventually overwhelmed him."

He left the grisly details out. She didn't need to know that.

"A lot of heroes died. DeadManSwitch--one of the New Sentinels--was probably the one most people would know of. Their power let them explode if they passed out. In the end, they threw themselves into Phokrus's mouth as it started to eat the world itself, and their death made an explosion so great that it tore a hole in reality, killing Phokrus instantly. Everyone left alive saw it."

He didn't think he'd ever forget it.
