"To be honest. and I mean no disrespect, but as a man, it's like you are almost expected to play that way at times. And if you don't, you are sort of considered," here she considered her words, "not necessarily untrustworthy, but a radical, someone who either easy to dupe, is a black sheep, or doesn't know how to run a business," she remarked wrinkling her nose at such antiquated ideas.

"Business deals - whether they be for the good of others, or just to make money, can just be dirty at times, there is a lot of give and take, a lot of behind the scenes that few people see, or would understand, and most of it is just a power play at times," she admitted with a tiny frown.

"Sometimes you need to do things you aren't proud of to get ahead of the competition or cement a deal," she stated with a sigh. Knowing that she had had to do things she was not proud of, and that in a way, she had no choice but to do if she wanted to grow her company.

"No offense taken," Frederick said, closing the box and turning back to her. He'd deal with the rest later--mostly it was clothes and odds and ends, but the kitchen stuff were all out. "But you're right. It's a power play. Things were complicated back in Halcyon, but the worst ones were..."

He paused, wrinkling his nose.

"The worst ones were the really dirty ones. The ones where everyone knows they're criminals, but there's no evidence. Nothing solid. You can't send them to jail, but you can't ignore them, either. No choice but to play along with them, which often means a struggle to keep yourself clean. People think 'oh, you just shouldn't deal with them', but that's often not a real choice."

"I completely understand that," Zora sympathized as she watched him close up the box and put it to the side."It's perhaps not as bad on a business level, but most certainly there have been times when my team has had to do a careful juggling act because it was a situation of - deal with them, or no entry into the market," she said as she glanced around the kitchen thoughtfully.

"Did that happen often to you when you were in Halcyon? The balancing act, having to openly deal with questionable people and all that?" she enquired, sort of wishing now that Broen had been more open about his world with her.

"More often than I'd ever have admitted back there," he said, leaning against the counter as he turned to face her. "Super-villains tended not to be so obvious. I'm certain I ran into a few sometimes, but without knowing their identities, it wasn't as if it was a serious factor."

He wondered how many he'd missed. How many people he ran into on a day to day basis without realizing.

Well, he knew of at least one.

"The worst was always Genovese. Everyone knew he was dirty, but anyone who tried to prove it ended up being discouraged from investigating further. And he loved to shove his nose into city politics."

"Genovese? Like Angelo Genovese?" Zora said rather shocked by this revelation as she looked directly at Frederick. She was sure Broen had mentioned Jude's father at some point when the refugees started arriving, but she was also fairly sure he'd also been a bit vague about it.

"One and the same," Frederick said, unsurprised to see her shock. Of course he wouldn't have told her. Of course he'd have kept that on the down low. "His father's human garbage. If I had a dollar for every person whose life he ruined, I could buy myself a new house."

Frederick's opinion of Basilio was staggeringly low. While he hadn't exactly self-reflected on the subject, of everyone, Genovese was probably the person he hated the most.

He had every reason to, after all.

"He owned half the waterfront. Sometimes it felt like he owned half the city, whether in his name or others. He was a constant problem, and my hands were tied."

Zora was astonished by everything Frederick was telling her and did not actually know what to say. She would never have guessed Jude's father was a supervillain or a mafia type or whatever was the equivalent on their world.

"I am so utterly floored by that," she admitted, "Jude is so, so... straight-laced at times," she said, struggling to find a word. "and Angelo is a police officer," she added, trying to reconcile all she knew about them, and found that she couldn't.

"You mean officer Genovese?" he said. When he'd heard, he'd gone and looked into things, and well... it hadn't been too hard to find.

"I can't say it for sure, but when I found out there was a version of him here I asked around. Apparently officer Genovese was raised in the mafia as well before coming to the island. It's good to hear he's made something of himself, but I'm not surprised."

There wasn't any sort of room for doubt in his explanation.

"It's a pity who Jude's father is. If he'd been the son of one of the great heroic lineages, he could have been a great hero in Halcyon. As things were, he'd always be held back by his father."

When Frederick mentioned Officer Angelo, Zora just nodded and listened, and it soon became apparent that she was not happy at what was being revealed. It seemed like everything she thought she knew, wasn't actually true, and somehow this only served to sadden and disappoint her.

"Jesus Christ and everyone says I'm the one who's fucked up," she finally uttered. "I honestly hate all this pretending, and keeping secrets, I have tried for months now to somehow become a better version of myself, to be more honest and forgiving, to make up for the horrible shit storm my brother left behind, and what the hell for?" she blurted out, now clearly frustrated, and wanting just to lash out at someone.

Frederick was ever so slightly taken aback by her surprise, but he was more than willing to roll with it.

"I'm not surprised they didn't tell you," he said. "Everyone in Halcyon knew, because it was all but impossible not to. Genovese had his fingers in too many pies for him to have possibly been legal, but there was no way around it, either. If was work with him, or don't work at all."

Never mind the possible consequences for crossing him. That was probably too violent for Zoraida, even with... or maybe especially because of what she'd been through lately.

"But I don't see why anyone would think you were screwed up," he said, carefully avoiding the harsher language. "You're perfectly well adjusted."
