Like the predator he was born to be, Reen was on the prowl.

His face was set in his usual scowl, eyes slowly panning across the campus grounds. Just from looking at him, it would be an easy mistake to think that he was expecting some kind of trouble. His body was like a coiled spring, tense, ready to leap into action.

However, he didn't, he was simply frustrated as usual.

After the 'prank' incident from a few weeks back, Reen had found himself much more busy. A student being assaulted on campus could easily be considered a failure on his part as a security guard. The administrative staff hadn't blamed him, especially as the student in question was unharmed in the end. But with the DSU pushing for more action on the academy's part, Reen had found himself roaming around the campus even more then he usually would be, keeping his eyes out on the student body, making sure no one else was causing any trouble.

Fortunately for the school, things had been quiet since then. Aside from the occasional delinquent that tried to sneak out of class, none of the more rowdy students had wanted to risk starting shit on the campus. Unfortunately for Reen, this meant that he spent a lot of time doing a whole lot of nothing. He felt himself getting ansty, his primal urges always at the back of his mind, and with his extra responsibilties, he never had a chance to go work them out. This had left him feeling more than a little pent up.

So, he roamed the campus, looking around, eyeing the occasional student he walked pass, until he spotted something unfamiliar. A giant pair of black wings attached to a small woman. Such a thing wasn't that unusual, especially on Manta Carlos, but with all the watching he'd been doing, Reen had a pretty good grasp on who was usually found in the school and who wasn't. He figured an unfamilar face was worth investigating, it was his job after all.

He approached her from behind, standing at his full height, looming over the young woman.

"Hey, you." He said, his deep, gravelly voice coming out as a growl. "You have business at the academy?"

Fortunately for Reen, Jia An was new to the school.

Unfortunately for An, Reen knew she was new to the school.

Not that she knew at all who the figure towering over her was, of course, eye mainly focussing on the great gray shadow blanketing her small frame. "You have business at the academy?"

Oh stars, she wanted to put on a brave front, she really did! But An was so deprived of human interaction after working in a lab that she had absolutely no idea how to respond. Her wings flew over her head, shielding her vulnerable back from view (not that it physically did much good). They formed a dome over her as she was bodily thrust forward, the books in her hands spilling from her arms and across the courtyard floor. She didn't dare to pick them up, though, only spun on her heels to face the owner of the voice, back stooped and left arm in front of her face.

You're behaving like a spooked deer. Get a hold of yourself. This is silly.

Silly and terrifying.

"I--" An's voice failed her. She could feel the magic roaring in her to moveand blip herself to a safe location, but her wings were all too prominent and the figure had already seen her face. She'd be found in a matter of minutes, even if she hid her wings. and if she went invisible? Who was she to say the guy didn't have some fancy magic tracker system? She straightened and folded said wings behind her back, doing her best to look the man in the eye. It wasn’t fair. She already had eye contact problems; this was just exacerbating it!

But she was a teacher, legally employed by the school. She had a right to be here. That guy shouldn’t be affecting her like this. An’s face fixed itself into as stern a look as she could muster. "— I teach here."

Reen looked down at her with his usual glare, his expression unmoving as her wings jerked up and her books dropped from her hands. He was an intimidating man, he knew this, often used it to his advantage. He hadn't actually intended to have such an effect on the young woman, but at this point, he was so used to people freaking out around him that he didn't even bother trying to correct his behaviour.

"Teacher, right." He spoke, tone flat, neutral. He vaguely recalled an announcement that the school would be receiving a new teacher soon, but hadn't paid much attention to it. His mind had been very preoccupied.

"Well then, you got a name?" He asked, crossing his arms in front of him, the motion pulling his suit jacket up a little bit. Though he didn't quite realise it, it was just high enough for him to reveal the holster he wore, the handle of his gun just visible at his side.

Her eyes were very busy (loosely) glaring at the lapel of his jacket, and so she did not notice the gun. Which was just as well; she'd probably have actually disappeared right then and there, and then wouldn't it be funny, the newest teacher thrown from the Academy's doors before her first week was up. Spineless creature, An berated herself, but continued to stare hard at the man's suit. He was tall in any case; she'd not be able to meet his eyes without craning her neck. And in that moment she'd no desire to do such a thing.

She schooled (ha) her voice into the firmest one she could manage, pleasant, but still polite. "Dr. Li Jia An. Physics, Chemistry, Lab tech."

An thought about mentioning the AVA Crew she helmed, but decided against it. She bent, gathering her books now that she'd ascertained it was safe to do so. As long as she looked no threat — or acted like one — she was by and large shielded from the full brunt of this man's fury, or whatever it was driving him. He really was rather large — long in the legs and not the spindly type either.

He was probably security, given his action towards her. That was reasonable. An relaxed, books now safely tucked under an arm.

"And yourself?"

Jia An, somewhere in the back of his head he remembered that name. He supposed that confirmed that this was the one he'd heard about.

"Reen." He said, simply. "Campus security."

Aside from his threatening stature, Reen didn't exactly look like a security officer. His appearance was shabby, face in need of a shave, hair poorly groomed. He didn't have any noticeable uniform, and his suit looked old and cheap enough to be second hand.

Still stern-faced as ever, he slowly bent down to pick up one of the books she'd dropped, holding it out in front of him for her to take. He realised he should probably avoid doing anything that would cause a commotion with her. The last thing he needed was the administration hearing that he had freaked out the new teacher.

"Pretty jumpy for a teacher, aren't you?" He noted, unfortunately his attempt at restraint didn't keep him from being blunt. "You're gonna need to work on that."

With the sort of the shenanigans, some of the rowdier students pulled, someone like her would probably look like easy pickings. Part of his statement was out of concern, though most of it was him thinking it'd make his job harder.

Reen was treating her like a wounded animal and An did not know whether to be grateful or insulted. She settled on the former. Movements still hesitant, the teacher reached out to retrieve the book from Reen's outstretched arm — and goodness, there was another person whose name started yet again with 'R'. Was it a common thing here on the island? First Raella, then Reen.

Still! That was besides the point. And you're very scary for campus security, she wanted to say too, but that was as silly as her prior fear. That was his job. It wouldn't do to go about flattering the man for all it was worth. Instead, An nodded, feeling rather stupid and awkward. They had reached an impasse; she didn't know what else to do besides heft the books into her arms so their weight was better supported and look at Reen. Hey, wouldn't it be a good time to work on that eye contact issue...

It was a good time indeed. An still had no idea what to say, but she opened her mouth anyway. "I've only been here less than a week," she said with a shrug. "There's lots to get used to. You don't get security looming over you in person in a lab." She recalled Mallory's cursory introduction of the human in the fridge, someone she decidedly did not want to be acquainted with. Despite the fact that the fridge was probably very sanitary and all, she was still a chemistry teacher and whatever was being used to keep everything clean was something An did not want remotely near her food.

"You're sharp," Jia An ended up saying instead. "Can I get you a coffee?"

Crap. She'd said that last part out loud, hadn't she?

Not only was she new the academy, but new the island as well. Reen had spent his entire time outside the narrow reality, he'd seen a lot of unnatural things. Killed and eaten a bunch of them as well. He wondered briefly how little she knew, those wings would have made it difficult to maintain the veil without having some passing information, he figured.

"Yeah well, as long as you behave yourself in the academy lab you won't have to worry about that here either." He grumbled back, not particularly bothered by the sass. He was about to continue, say that she didn't need to worry about that now either before leaving her to go on her way, but then she made her offer before she could.

He frowned to himself, before actually considering it. On the one hand, Reen was cranky enough without having to play babysitter to the new teacher. Acclimatising people to the supernatural elements on the island was not his job. But on the other hand, he was tired, hadn't been sleeping well, and bored or staring at the scenery. He could sit down for a moment and have some coffee without the school burning itself to the ground. Hopefully.

"Yeah, sure. Why not?" He said.

She wasn't sure if she'd be expelled if she swore out loud. So An swore in her head while maintaining the pleasant-ish smile that she was trying for.

It was a stretch, but she rather thought it was alright.

Reen's cursory comment about behaving in the lab didn't bother her much; despite her misgivings and shortcomings An was a fairly excellent lab worker. Proper lab behaviour had been ingrained into her since she was eleven, operating her first bunsen burner; she found it cathartic, the hands-on work that commanded total focus. Reen was not wrong, though, and it gave her pause. Would he really bust into the lab if any explosions occurred?

Well. Wouldn't that be awkward.

Reen was a scruffy man, hair unkempt and the beginnings of something more than stubble gracing his face. The very air he exuded was of something akin to exhaustion — or perhaps mere tiredness, the kind of crabby feeling napping for too long gave. An presumed he was a man not given to long, excitement-less periods; he'd found her quicker than a snapping whip, though it was his job. Briefly, An wondered if she was meant to be distracting him. For sure the campus had more than one guard, but was it too forward of her...?

Before she could say anything — apologise for her runaway tongue, perhaps, or propose something else instead — Reen accepted. An's eyes widened just the slightest... But she didn't retract the offer.

"Alright then," said Jia An, given that it was a Sunday and she had mostly finished her planning. After the staffroom fiasco, she'd made sure to learn where the nearest coffee place was, given that most of her new colleagues seemed to favour the drink. Her wings folded behind her, the intangible feathers phasing into the ground. Unlike... before Manta Carlos, she had no need to hide them on the Academy; while a good portion of her life had been spent magicking them invisible, it was unnecessary here. "Shall we...?"

[All good, don't worry about it lol]

The Campus had its own little cafe, but Reen didn't really spend much time there. He was already an antisocial man by himself, and the rest of the staff members caught onto that pretty fast, so they usually gave him a wide berth. Aside from going there to pick up a cup and leave, he had little reason to hang around. Actually being asked to accompany someone was unusual, actually agreeing even more so.

He grunted in affirmation, hands digging into his pockets, gesturing his head along the path as he turned to walk. "Lead on, then."

As they went, he seemed to watch her out of the corner of his eye, sizing her up. She didn't seem quite as shaken as she'd seemed moments ago, but she still looked skittish, flighty, almost vulnerable. Somewhere in the back of his mind it stirred up his natural instincts, reminded him of his past, reminded him of the sort of prey he used to hunt.

It made him feel hungry.

As soon as he realised the thoughts were in his head he banished them right away. That's not who he was anymore, he wasn't an animal, an animal couldn't live in this world he was now apart of.

He focused on other details instead, noticing how her wings seemed to clip into the ground. Seemed there was a little more going on there than it first appeared.

"So, those real?" He asked, bluntly, gesturing to the wings.

That was odd. The birds weren't surrounding her.

They were in front of her, scattering when her feet touched the ground; they were to her sides, a few metres away, but... An turned to look back and confirmed her suspicions. There were no birds behind her. They were giving the man a wide berth -- An didn't know why, but she was inclined to trust her birds. They said things. They whispered in languages others couldn't speak. The birds knew.

But they didn't tell her anything.

They were side by side now. Most people didn't ask about her wings; Reen was more observant than she had originally thought. Or perhaps he'd just never seen something like that before -- intangible body parts attached to a clearly corporeal being. Absentmindedly, the teacher flared one out, the one that wasn't near Reen so he wouldn't have feathers passing through him.

Then, like the birds she so resembled, she gave Reen a good bit of distance before lifting off briefly into the air. She landed about a metre away, beside the security guard. An quirked a brow in answer -- that should have been definitive enough.

They arrived at the Coffee Place -- really, it was a cafe, but An mentally called it the Coffee Place as all people really seemed to go there for was the beverage... She gestured to a side table by the window, two seats facing each other across the circular surface. Light filtered in through the glass and set the smooth glaze?? Finish?? awash with something akin to gold. It was pleasant enough.

"I'll pay." An made to move over to the counter?? Ordering-place?? "What would you like?"
