If Nat was looking happy before, the arrival of the food left her positively filled with joy. She did her best to keep the same composure she'd maintained so far during the evening, even if internally she was practically salivating just from the smell.

"Thank you, I think I will." She grinned, taking her cutlery and making a start on the Stroganoff. She listened to the suggested instructions, restrained herself enough to take her time eating the meal. It wouldn't do to show up to a fancy restaurant like this and forget her table manners, after all.

"My compliments to the chef." She said genuinely, after a few mouthfuls, nodding to Malakias. "I see you were right in having confidence."

Now that the atmosphere was definitely a lot more comfortable, she thought she might try and probe a little deeper, see what sort of reaction she could dig out of the more composed man.

"Your father, he's currently the head of Volkov Family International, right?" She mused, casually dropping the fruits of her research in between bites. "I figured he would have taught you a lot more than just restaurant management."

She watched his face, an almost mischevious look in her eye.

"Why would he send his son just to look after a restaurant, I wonder..."

Malakias had to agree with Natalie, the food did smell wonderful. Rada had obviously outdone herself again.

"I will send my sister your regards then," he said with a wolfish grin, "She is the head chef here and in charge of the menu planning and the kitchens," he explained as he helped himself to the Makarony po-flotski first. The simple, yet delicious, pasta and meat dish had always been a favourite of his.

Nodding at the question about his father, unfazed by it, he took a bite of his pasta and took his time chewing it before swallowing. Deliberately acting like he was considering it, though he wasn't really... Malakias had expected she would ask after him. Most people in the know, business associates, reporters, all asked the same or similar question. A question that implied - either his father didn't trust him, saw him as insignificant since it was just a restaurant he was in charge of when Volkov was a huge company; or there had to be more to it since he was Dimitri's son and a restaurant would, in theory, be beneath him.

Either way, Malakias cocked his head at Miss Kurono and smiled patiently at her, "Have you ever ran a restaurant, Miss Kuron? One like this?" he asked her evenly, "I assure you it's no easy task. And the distillery is also a lot of work." he explained.

"But to answer your question, I am just here to help set things up, get them going and hopefully start expanding the business," he told her quite truthfully, or as truthfully as he could.

"Oh, I'm sure it's not easy at all. Especially when you've just arrived in the city. A new community can be pretty impenetrable after all."

As in control as she was expecting him to be, it looked like. Natalie continued to eat as she listened, noting down that his sister was behind the food. That was certainly interesting to her, she didn't know any other members of the family had come with Malakias. She wondered if she was doing anything more than just working the kitchen. If they were related by blood there was a good chance she was important. It was another angle she could approach later, she thought.

"So, expanding huh?" She leaned in with a playful smirk. "Think you could give me a sneak peek into how you're planning on branching out?"

"You are quite the inquisitive one, aren't you, Miss Kurono?" Malakias laughed good-naturedly when she asked him if he could tell her what plans the family had for their future expansion on the island.

"I really can't say," he said, not at all offended by her question, "We have not decided exactly where we are taking the business yet," he told her as he decided to try the stroganoff and placed a scoop on his plate as he studied her for a moment.

"What about you, Miss Kurono? What future plans do you have?" Malakias asked her suddenly as he picked up his third shot of vodka and downed it.

"Well, what can I say?" She shrugged, still smiling at the callout. "I'm a journalist, it's my job to be inquisitive. I'd be pretty garbage at it if I wasn't asking questions."

Even with her restraint, she was still making quick work of the food, moving on from the stroganoff to the slice of Orlov. She batted her eyes at him in response to his question.

"Speaking of my job, while I do appreciate your interest, Mr Volkov, for now, I think I'd prefer to be asking the questions. Maybe you can try asking me again when I'm not working." Her grin spread a little wider as she shot him a sly look.

As she cut into her dish, she considered how to take this interview. She knew that she wouldn't be able to get too much out of him just by talking, and while she was sure there was something dirty happening behind the scenes, she had no real evidence of that. She didn't think it was a good idea to push him too much, in case he decided to throw her out. But she was never particularly afraid of taking risks.

Sometimes, you just had to shake the tree and see what fell out.

"You sure you don't have any ideas? Maybe...drug trafficking? Extortion? Something a little more violent?" She casually asked, as if it were a totally innocent question, before eating a mouthful of Orlov.

"Oh my..." Malakias let out a loud guffaw when Natalie asked, most innocently, her question about the family dealing in drugs, extortion or some sort of violent activities... whatever she was imagining in her mind, made Malakias smile, a real genuine smile. He was also amazed and, yes, somewhat impressed at her audacity and chutzpah. Even though such inquisitiveness could bring her problems, but he suspected that she already knew that.

"I am not sure what you heard about the Volkov family and its businesses, but we are not the Italian mafia, that I can assure you," he remarked with a chuckle, deliberately not answering her question as he helped himself to the Pelmeni and waved the waiter over and asked him to bring a bottle of their best plain vodka. He liked the flavoured vodkas but found them cloying after a while, and therefore preferred just a simple vodka on ice.

Nat looked very amused by his reaction. Even if she didn't get a straight answer, she got a kick out of taking the man by surprise like that. She still had a shot of flavoured vodka, so she quickly picked it up and downed it. If he was ordering some more she might as well make room.

"Oh, I'm not accusing you of anything, of course." She said, coyly. "I have no idea what sort of business you and your family get up to. But, I am a journalist. Part of my job does involve me poking my nose into other peoples business. So you can't blame me for wanting to find out."

She paused her dining for a moment, simply moving the veal around the plate with her fork, like a cat playing with her food.

"You're new to Manta Carlos," She noted. "So you might not know yet, but a lot of us islanders are pretty tightly knit. The community is pretty close, and they like to keep each other safe."

She put her cutlery back down, resting back in her seat.

"They can get a little...defensive if they think someone from the outside is going to cause trouble here. So if some sort of foreign mafia did decide to come to Manta Carlos, well, things could get a little messy."

Nodding his thanks as the waiter placed the vodka on the table with tumblers of ice, Malakias started pouring himself a liberal amount, holding up the bottle slightly to of Natalie some if she wanted it.

"Are you worried about my welfare, Miss Kurono?" Malakias quipped lightly when she had finished warning him about bringing any illegal or potentially criminal or harm-causing activities to the island.

Then, "Is your veal okay?" he asked her curiously, glancing at her plate then. He had noticed her playing with her food, and wondered if there might be something wrong with it.

"Why would I be worried? You aren't doing anything wrong, aren't you?" She eyed him, mischievously, holding out her glass for him to fill, nodding in thanks. "No, I think you can handle yourself just fine."

She shook her head as he asked about the food. "No, it's delicious, of course. I just want to take my time." She said as she cut into the last of her veal, swallowing it all in one mouthful before scooping some of the Pelmeni onto her plate.

"No, in the end, all I'm really concerned about is a story." She continued. "There's always a story to find on this island. You just have to ask the right people."

She looked back to him, blinking slowly, the smile on her face looking almost predatory.

"What do you think, Mr Volkov, am I asking the right person?"

As she spoke, he almost nodded approvingly when Natalie took some pelmeni onto her plate. Him and his sister, Rada, may not see eye to eye on most things. However, when it came to food, they agreed, and Malakias had to admit that she knew her stuff.

Malakias then sat back against the booth, relaxing a bit now, and eyed her over, her face, upper body, definitely liking what he was seeing. She was a very attractive, if not beautiful woman. Taking a drink of his drink, swirling his ice, he flashed her wolfish grin.

"I don't know, Miss Kuronos," he started, "Do you think I am the right person?" he asked pointedly, and then added after a short pause, "For your article..." he said in a teasing tone.
